Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

If they let me play most of the Panthers would not survive the game with all the terrible accidents they'd encounter like decaptitation, poisoning, neck down paralysis, having their legs chainsawed off, and of course, that unfortunate mistake that led to those brain eating amoebas in their water bottles.

I know the frustration built throughout 2025, but how quickly we forget how miserable 2024 or 2022 were. I take this season all day, even if there were plenty of pain points along the way.

I feel good about Keefe and the foundation he is building. It'll be an interesting offseason because I think we're ideally going to have to look at the trade market to fill the gaps at forward.

Team played in conservative hockey but they made enough to make play offs. Devils were out of the race with injuries in 2022 and 2024, but even with injuries of Dougie, Jack, Markstrom and other players Devils went through the march with positive difference and had no reason to make heroic action to take a play offs spot in the end of the season.
First round wasnt excited but they played really well 5 on 5 with all those injures. They were absolutely bad against Cans in 2023. Steps forward.

Ya, I didn't find this season that difficult to enjoy.

The continuing Jack injuries were/are a heavy cloud though. Especially coupled with Luke's.

But we made the playoffs which is more then we can say in most seasons over the last decade+.

I wasn't able to attend any of the games in 2023, so being able to be at the first home game and see the double OT winner this year was special for me. It's easy to have taken playoff hockey for granted growing up with how regularly we were a part of it.

That effort that night was everything that I think is being overlooked. The boys have it in them to play playoff hockey. The depth up front just wasn't there to generate enough offense. Fill those gaps somehow, ideally have a cleaner bill of health, and I think we can compete with anyone.

The playoffs made me more confident in the direction we're going. They could have just collapsed like the previous few months but they played their asses off. Of course they still need to get more depth on offense and better injury luck, they're not there yet. But I see the logic here.

I'm not as confident in Fitz as I was going into last offseason, so hopefully he can regain some of that trust. The coaching hires are a great start.

can we please, PLEASE stop this nonsense?

as if winning 2 regular season November games means anything in the long run?

It means something. It beats losing the two games. Obviously it doesn't mean NJ should have won the cup but saying when they were on their game they could beat Florida handily in real games on the road is not meaningless. I still believe NJ beats the Canes if Jack and Luke and Kovacevic are healthy. Probably the Caps as well. But we can't change the past. At least not yet. Some theories under consideration may change that eventually.

This is where I am at. Not super negative towards Fitz, but he does need some better moves this offseason.

And despite some of Fitz's moves, from signings, to trades and drafting, looking like questionable decision making, Florida winning yet again behind size toughness, and even an older goalie, the overall vision of Fitz looks OK.

That's just a premise supporting a conclusion. The conclusion being the Devils were excellent for 2+ months of the year. Which I imagine you agree with.

sure yeah, the Devils were great for 3 months. Until they weren't.

And no, winning 2 November games IS meaningless in the long-run. Would I rather win than lose? Again, yes of course. But Florida didn't have Marchand or Seth Jones, etc at that point. It was 7 months ago. It is nowhere near the same team.

I have seen plenty of Devils fans acting like we should feel good about ourselves because we beat them two times 7 months ago. I don't really care about that kind of stuff. If you want to hang the banner, I guess by all means.
