Your Rebuild Opinion? Next Move Coming?

The definitiveness towards the inability of Marner, Matthews, JT. etc to wn in playoffs, especially from Red Wings fans, blows my mind.

Yzerman couldn't win it all, Datsyuk was labeled as a playoff choker, and I'm sure there are many other situations where a guy "couldn't" win but eventually did.

Maybe the Leafs need a fundamental change, but I don't think the narratives around these players are as black and white as fans and h8ers like to make them.
As a group of players I can see where its coming from. But the people in this thread that dont want Marner at all for a market price contract is hilarious. You know what else the Leafs dont have? Any dmen like Seider.

The wings arent Toronto, their cap situation is drastically different, they have a group of great prospects on the way. You add a 100 point player to that for the cost of cap space any day. They need to worry about making the playoffs first. Maybe as he gets older, Marner figures the playoffs out.

Maybe someone like Raymond, Larkin or Kasper turn into complete playoff studs that step up come playoff time unlike Matthews/JT and Marner not being an absolute stud come playoff time doesnt hurt Detroit as much.

What I do know is that Detroit lacks elite talent up front. Marner is absolutely elite, you need to take that risk.

- marner being a smart finess player functioning alot on the perimeter adds up to probably a longer era of health and high point production over his career . and getting selke votes a huge plus

RAYMOND-LARKIN-MARNER

it would be a huge decission for yzerman to make spending that much long term cap . thats why i prefer depth over top end talent = if you have 6 excellent middle roster guys compared to 2 top guys it doesnt hurt as much losing one or two of the 6 . but if a top gun guy doesnt pan out youve got problems for 7 years . but that raymond-larkin-marner line would be a top n exciting line in nhl , huge decission that determines the future . and to add , the following ufa season top ufa would look at that line with seider-eddie and say i wanna be on that team ! so i wouldnt doubt yzerman offers marner n garikov to go all in with a strong fleet of prospects approaching

- av's stole my brock nelson plan

imo were just not ready yet to sign old ufa long term and watch the end of their primes go before were contender . i say wait to make a big ufa splash til more spects have developed . since avs signed nelly im hoping tavares gets to ufa and we sign him for 2 or 3 to mentor kids like philosopher kane has been doing . tavares teaching dannyson n kasper to get more shots on net is just what dr ordered

and still real gung ho on over paying jeannot to get team tougher without a big cap hit , ide like to ship a pick for negotiating rights right now and get him on board . plus orlov

JEANNOT X 4
TAVARES X 3
ORLOV X 2

then i have the cap to sign our own spect's in a few years to long term , while we start a decade+ hardware shopping spree led by woden's off spring SEIDEN

I'm warming back up to a Marner contract but cautiously. The playoff stink-ups I've called him out on, well, I can't be hypocritical of because Detroit hasn't even made the playoffs since months before his rookie year. However, I still stand firm that the most valuable players are the ones who step it up when the game gets tighter and you no longer rack up points against bottom feeder teams. If Marner is going to sign with a team he believes is a playoff contender, he damn well best be making his worth outside of that Toronto spotlight

Now, the likelihood of our team, let alone Yzerman shooting for the stars like that, is extremely unlikely to be honest. I think a more reasonable option is signing Gavrikov. There needs to be urgency there too

Gavrikov can go for 6 × 7.5 or whatever the market value might with him. Turns 30 next season, so lots of runway left for his level of play I think. Exactly the type of LHD we need-- big bodied shutdown D that would instantly improve our historically dog shit PK from last year

That kind of addition does wonders for any lineup (like Ekholm in Edmonton or Forsling in Florida), even if ours is still trying to just make the playoffs

Orlov's play from game to game has been so inconsistent, I doubt Stevie wants anything to do with him. While he's physical, he's actually short for a D-man at 5'11". I also don't see Orlov signing for 2 years on his last pay day. He's 33.

Yeah, but but we can just draft our own 80-100 pt player, like some think is so easy.

not sure if this was brought up at all, but would you guys consider doing marner for 3-5 years at 15 mil? He's 28 so i don't think he should do it. maybe the 3 years i suppose, but i was just curious. clearly not going to happen and he should get his bag if he can.

in 3 years, the cap will be raised substantially. so it would really hurt us at all. and in his 3rd year, he can get essentially his final bag of 7 years, taking him to 38 and be good.

No, he won't do it unless we can do something like they do in MLB. Sign him to a 5 year deal, but give him an out clause the second and/or third year. Big gamble for us, lessens the gamble for him.
