Your Rebuild Opinion? Next Move Coming?

Getting Marner is a bad idea. Regardless of how skilled he is the team doesn't need another small forward at the insane salary he is going to command.

If he hits the market we should be targetting Sam Bennett. The team needs grit, an agitator and someone to create room for guys lie Debrincat and Raymond.

The worst 5 on 5 scoring team doesn’t need more skill and a 100 point player? Jesus you guys are delusional

We definitely need a top 6 forward that can score, maybe two of them so other players get pushed down a line on the depth chart where they actually belong. If we get a decent 2C or 3C, we can move one of Compher or Copp to the wing. Larkin, Kasper, a UFA C, and Compher or Copp as 4c is better C depth.
We also need a 1 LD to bump Chiarot down to the 3rd pair.

Why not both?

False.

McCarty played in 17 of the 22 playoff games. Drake in all 22.

They weren't a goon squad, but the team had players on the roster playing every night that didn't let games get out of control or the skill players to get continually manhandled.
The original post I quoted mentioned McCarty and Downey. No one mentioned Drake.

And again, McCarty averaged 6 minutes a game those playoffs. No one is making that much of an impact playing 10% of the game.

6 minutes or not, McCarty played. I would argue that the fact he was in the lineup despite playing limited minutes actually re-enforces the idea that a tough guy, even in limited minutes, is more valuable than a 12-14 minute nothing-player like Motte or Fischer.

And, the actual point is that you are arguing that it doesn't matter if the current team is tough because the last Cup Champion team wasn't tough, and that is demonstrably false.

Maybe, and I am fine with making moves to make this team tougher, because I doubt very much we will be able to build a team as skilled as that one.

I just don't think our top guys need to be the ones to do that, ideally. I don't want Seider missing 2 weeks because he hurt his hand fighting some 4th line scrub.

Absolutely agree. I don't even want Seider off the ice for 5 minutes except for a rare instance to defend himself, and even then only if he takes someone significant off the ice with him.

I'm beginning to get a little sick of hearing about lottery luck. Yes the Wings got screwed out of the number one pick in 2020. But that gave us Raymond instead of Lafreniere. And as luck has it, we ended up with the better player.

It's not just about 2020. They fell back in the draft multiple years.

And in general when people talk about other team's rebuilds, almost all of them have had a lot more high picks than the Wings, who didn't because of years of success, bad lottery luck, and wasted picks like Zadina and Rasussen.

It's not the only reason the rebuild has been so long, but it certainly didn't help.

Emmitt Finnie gonna get a real shot at a roster spot next year is it a lock already he's in the AHL?

he's played the last few games for GR, iirc. I think he might at least start next year in GR to get a look at a bigger role down there before coming to Detroit. Depends a bit who does start in Detroit, though.

If we graduate a guy or two on top of Mazur, there is going to be the opportunity for a lot of IT down there.

On the Larkin front, and needing another top6 wing. How much does Danielson need to show in the NHL before getting a center spot in the top6?

I think Kasper is looking like a top6 center, or has at least earned the right to get a much longer look there next year. If Danielson comes up, and can shoulder a center spot by the end of the season...I think it's very possible Larkin gets shifted to wing. Suddenly, he takes a lot less wear and tear. The wing position allows him to play more heavily to his strengths, and it eliminates the necessity for us to find another goal scoring wing for the top6.

It could also be a good reason to go hard after Bennett. Let him and Kasper center the top6 lines, shift Larkin to wing. Hell, might even be a reason to throw a contract at Tavares.

Just an alternative idea for how we can build out the scoring lines over the next couple of years.

Could have used some luck in 2017, 2018, 2023 or 2024 though.

Won’t happen but anyways

Compher + Berggren for Bertuzzi

Marner 15 x 3 (don’t think he gets more than 12.5 longterm, look what happened to rantanen)

Ppl won’t agree but i don’t see debrincat getting a 7-8 yr deal here . Debrincat in a deal for Romanov

Wallinder to the blues for Lukas Fischer

Get a third team involved for a double retention of tarasenko and we can get the “futures”

Buy out holl

Lock up edvinsson longterm

i know we just got him but deal Mrazek for 4-6th and go talbot Cossa ... going with the kids is the way to go for this team

Soderblom larkin marner
Bertuzzi Kasper Raymond
Lombardi copp danielson
Jeannot Rasmussen mazur
Watson (let him come back to surround Elmer and help him keep mentoring him)

Romanov seider
Edvinsson pellikka
Chiarot johansson
Gustafsson tuomisto

Talbot Cossa

If we can find a taker for chiarot at 50% and find an upgrade even better ... maybe Alec Martinez can be an option as 7-8?

After next season we would have to find a way to part with copp and possibly Bertuzzi again or gulp ... a lombardi if he doesn’t pan out to make room for nygaard and hopefully buchelnikov... wings will have to make some tough decisions with all the kids coming up In a few yrs, kiiskinen, plante,Finnie, becher etc...

I don’t hate that idea, if we strike out on Marner. I could see it making sense. Bennett lines up with the type yzerman likes.

Dare I ask your plan for acquiring someone who can put the team on his back?
The usual routes; drafting or trades. McD, Crosby, Makar, McKinnon, Ovi, Karlsson (Ottawa days), Kucherov, Vasilevsky, Quick, Kane, etc...all draft choices that showed great heroics in the playoffs. Matt Tkachuk was acquired via trade, Jeff Carter as well who absolutely had a big part in the Kings Cups. I realize the draft choices I listed are mostly lottery picks, but the point stands. You don't UFA your way to a Cup. I'd rather see what prime Seider/Raymond/Ed/Cossa can do rather than splurge for a guy who has done nothing to elevate his team in over a decade.

The UFA list would be much shorter, as in Petro for Vegas, and I'll add Bob for Fler-duh.

If you think he would score 100 points on this shit roster you are delusional.
Maybe not next year but he’s gonna score 85-90. Once the kids push through he will be playing on a very deep team with a great d-core. It’s not like he won’t be playing with good players here as well

This team is nowhere near having a great d-core or being a deep team. Marner isn't signing here so it's all moot but this team needs to figure out how to get some high end talent infused

At this point, a 20-year old kid with 7 AHL games of experience, would likely be looked at as a longshot for a roster spot in the NHL.

This is sadly the level of analysis you come to expect on what was once a very good message board. I'd expect this sort of analysis from Detroit sports radio.
Enlighten us, do you think the core of Larkin/Raymond/Seider is good enough to win a cup? Or how do you plan to get a franchise player good enough to win a cup?
