He was an all rounder instead of a prospect with one shiny talent and probably the fact that the Quebec league is seen as a lesser league among the three CHL leagues.
He was one of the best puck puckhandlers on the draft. May be the best one. Beside vision, iq, two way game etc.

How TF did Mercer fall to 18th overall. He's already a 25+ goal ~55 point 2-way winger in his age 21 season. Kid is going to be a monster for a long time

His motor and hands aren't the only reasons he gets Parise comparisons. He dropped like crazy also, and it looks ridiculous in hindsight to see some of the guys that were taken ahead of him.

It was really strange. He was my number two priority for 7th pick after Quinn. I dreamed about draft him by our 9-11 pick before Arizona won play in.

It was draft day miracle in october when everybody decide to pick other guys.
I still remember the GDT for the draft. A bunch of us were rooting for every team in front to take other guys and they did. It really felt surreal when he was there at 18 and everyone almost knew he was a Devil

There was some scouts questioning his skating . Not that they were right . Some said that his skating was slightly below average and didn’t have a good looking stride .
That and his numbers (although “good”) we not seen as elite . He is paying amazing and will be a huge player for the Devils for years. He as drafted for his no quit motor plus skill. Perfect type of player that every team needs to win .

Mercer might blow past Raymond at this rate to be the 2nd best forward behind Stutzle from that draft

kinda insane
When it's all said and done, I think Raymond will be more successful, I really like him and he's probably the better offensive guy, but there's a HUGE shot for Dawson to be the 3rd best.
