He’s actually in a great position at the 3 second mark and for whatever reasons abandons it

It's one that watching in realtime I figured Markstrom would want back. I thought he was tight to the post but his body not turned far enough to face the shooter.

On the replay, it looks like he feels himself giving up too much short side and closes hard.

Good shooters will exploit (and sometimes get lucky on) little windows.

It was a bummer to give that one up, but the team rallied and got the win. I'll take my goalie giving up two goals against the division leader any night.

So...I haven't been paying much attention to the GDT lately (though I did see the game and I'm still euphoric after seeing JBITBPITNHL have himself a night).

But did everyone agree with the 3 stars of the game?

I mean...don't get me wrong : Markstrom was solid in net last night but....I don't know about him being 1st star.

I would've given the 3 stars (in order) to :

1.) Bratt
2.) Markstrom
3.) Hughes (Jack)
I honestly think they gave Markstrom the first star so he could get the on-ice interview in the post game for the milestone 500th game.

Although I do remember them giving the interview to one of the other three stars in the past if there was a significant reason to interview them.

This was a big win.

Canes have had 6 years of deep playoff runs in a row and they had a hot streak going. It's too early to talk of contenders or even playoffs, but this could not have been a better timed win.
I think it was a time to talk about play off even before this seasons was started. The only thing that would prevent us were injuries. It is actual for now too. There are no miracle "play off team no matter what". But if our core will feel fine they will crack play off.

This is the biggest win of the season for me! Canes fans will say b2b, biased refs, 3rd goalie etc, but aside from a bit rusty beginning I though the Devils played great. Tight defence against their dangerous cycle play and fast breakouts against their aggressive forechecking. Sure b2b wins against the defending champs at Florida was incredible, but this canes team has just felt unbeatable for so long, extremely disciplined and also very lucky.

I think it's now beyond any doubt that this is a really good hockey team. I'd like to see an add to the 4th line, but other than that we're in really great shape. We can clearly go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league, and I don't think anyone in hockey wants to play us in a 7 game series.

Remember all the doomers freaking out because the players hadn't learned a new system with basically zero training camp and we were missing a whole second pairing? God they look like a bunch of dumbasses now, don't they?

The most important thing at this point is remaining healthy. Hopefully we see some further refinement over the rest of the season with regards to the slow starts and some of the silly stuff. I don't like how often out losses are shutouts, hopefully we can find some ways to generate offense in these low-event games.
I got all doomy after the home WSH game and the first TB game stretch, cause that felt awfully similar to last year. Especially the TB game, I broke lmao.

With that said, since the Detroit game, they’ve played some good hockey overall and it’s extremely encouraging. They’re looking like a new team. Responsible, disciplined, intelligent, structured hockey. I like it. Keefe has been so good for this group.

The only time I had doubts was that four-game stretch of awful goaltending. Before that I could see what they were trying to do. That period made me think that maybe it didn't matter what their system was, the goaltending was still piss poor. But after that, it got better on all regards.

Agreed.

Thinking about it, the three stars are selected by the attending media... With our coverage (or lack thereof), who even is that at this point? Gabriel Trevino and... ?

Could he be the sole person selecting the 3 stars? :)

I think a lot of the goals scored last night were just elite, well placed shots for both teams.

Dougie's slapper, whether intentional or not, in close short side with almost no daylight - pretty damn good.
noticed that when watching the highlights. The Jack tip pass to Bratt was absurd, only eclipsed by Noesen batting his saucer out of the air into the net.
