Interesting comment from Torts in the presser, they are still going to be sellers. Holy crap, he made sense! Don't fall in love with the team/your players, some of them have to go as part of the rebuild.

Walker or Risto, Seeler, Staal, Hathaway, Atkinson, Laughton should all be on the block. If Briere can trade Deslaurier's contract, he will be a genius. Need to trade a could D and one of the Fs. Brink needs to play, among others.

Wait until you find out it was Frost he is talking about.

Sell the team

See you in 2026-2027

Thank you for bringing this up. Painting this as black and white is flawed.

There’s nothing wrong with trading for players who you think can contribute right now. They just shouldn’t be pending 29yo UFAs. Call everyone. See who you can shake free.
Excuse me we only are allotted 17 phone calls

I think the Drysdale trade forced them into having to trade a D man now, I legit don’t know what one of the 7 dmen they’d scratch? No shot they sit Risto, and quite frankly he prob doesn’t deserve it lol
Don’t have to scratch any, you can play 7D. It’s working right now, and you can save for the playoffs

You are Danny Briere - who do you move? Who/what do you target? Who do you not move? Do you extend anyone?

Jan 19, 2024: 45 GP - 25-14-6 - 56 points
I'm still moving Walker, Risto if I can, and it shaves 4M+ million dollars for latter years of his deal. Atkinson if he draws interest although I think he's a buyout candicate.

As Torts alluded said yesterday: They have to think big picture.

Trades:
The goal should should be having a 8-10 year run of being competitive, and that should start around Michkov's arrival. Trade the guys who won't be essential parts of the team by that point get the most you can for them.

Re-evaluate in the offseason, taking picks over someone like Walker negates the risk of Walker being overpaid, and reverting back to average handicapping us cap wise in the future, Aswell as whatever we get for him, is just more assets to use in the event hey look at the RFA Center market. Acquiring a Top 6 Center that's young and will help us now and when Michkov's here.

I'd be targeting guys like Zegras, or draft picks, Prospects with 2C upside.

Extensions:
I'd be down giving Seeler a 2 year deal 2 x 2Mish, not much more than that but I like how he;s played the last 2 years, and he's a stable Dman for the younger guys to ease into the NHL.

If the number makes sense on Tippett 6.5 tops, I'd look to extend.

At a minimum, one of Seeler/Walker/Risto has to go. If they can turn some combination of Walker, Seeler, Risto, Atkinson, Laughton, Tippet into someone that can help now and be a part of the core moving forward, I'd do it. Otherwise at least 1 dman, should go and Laughton if a 1st is on the table.

Michkov is not the savior, he'll be a good addition but you want to build a team, don't wait for one player and expect him to make you a winner (how's NJ doing these days?). The general rule on aging curves is 3rd/4th line guys are risks over 30, 2nd line 32, 1st line 35 (G, Couts). D-men tend to play well for an additional year over forwards, so Sanheim is probably safe up to 33 or so.,

Locking up guys like Frost, Tippett, TK, etc. at reasonable rates when you have lots of cap room makes good sense, you're going to want some seasoned vets to go with the players under 25, and better your own than buy some mercenaries like NJ did (Hamilton, Palat, etc.). Even if they're an overpay five years from now, the cap will be up $20M and you'll have top talent on ELCs and first RFA deals.

What's the rush to trade Hart or anyone else who is young and under a reasonable contract? Kolosov should come over next season to the AHL, Zavragin to the KHL, Bjarnason to the AHL in two years. As long as you don't have to break the bank, see how the young goalies develop.

Ironically, having 7 NHL capable defensemen, plus Staal as a tertiary option for a 6 defenseman set up, is what teams would kill for when preparing for a playoff run.

Could have used this kind of depth in 2010...

I know I am wrong but I don't have confidence that we will be able to build an entire team around one player. We had Giroux for how long and never accomplished anything. Is Michkov better than Giroux?

Also, I am enjoying watching this team more than any team in a long time and am not looking forward to going back to sucking for 3-4 more years.

Nobody has said he is the savior. In this sport, no one player is. But he is a thing you build around.

I'm sure this is a misunderstanding on your part and not a deliberate construction of a strawman argument! I believe in you. I am a beacon of faith, hope, and light.

My answer depends on price for most of our real
assets. I’d hope Briere’s does too.

Someone offers a 1st or a couple 2nds or a good prospect for Walker or Walker+Seeler? I’d move em. Only a 2nd+? I’d seriously consider an extension depending on the discount Walker is willing to give to stay here.

If someone is offering up a 1 for Laughton, it’s a no brainer. A 2? Seriously thinking about it. Anything less? Probably not worth it in my book.

I’d move Atkinson/Risto to get off those contracts but not sure there’d be any buyers.

I’d personally move Staal, but I have no idea what type of voice he is in that locker room right now. If his leadership is important, is a 6th really worth it? Probably not.

The one controversial move I would make is to trade Carter Hart, if there’s a market with the Hockey Canada shit looming. I’m beyond confident… downright cocky… when it comes to our future in net. Ersson, Kolosov, Zavragin. We are good there. Shouldn’t be signing Hart to a long term expensive deal. Save that money and get a 1st++. Team will be so much better in the long run for it.

In this case, tertiary means available if everyone else in the entire org was shanked in an alley and Mark Howe didn’t want to come out of retirement?

Yeah, the year everyone moved for 2nd round picks so the Flyers couldn’t do anything because they didn’t have any because they traded one for Carcillo and WITH Denis Gauthier. They were lucky to hit on Leino, but the forward depth was in big trouble in the first half of the playoffs. They had Jared Ross and Andreas Nodl killing penalties in overtime vs. Boston in game 4.

I can almost hear the sound bites from last year's playoffs lauding his intangibles. Surely there's a sucker who'll ask about him around the trade deadline, right?

Cam trade asap at 50% if you can.

Prefer to trade Risto. It will probably be Walker. Walker and Risto both cant be on roster next year. Not a 1 more than a 2. Think ada trade

Seeler plus (say a 4)if u see a 2 you grab it it. If its only a late 3, i might just hold for the playoffs.

With all the cap room, the flyers can get 4's by just being a 3rd parties in trades. (20m + according to eklund)

Hart you absolutely listen. More likely offseason move.

Laughton his value probably crashed. Might as well keep. (grrr flusher)

44 free limo out of town if someone takes him. won;t happen

Hathaway I sure would move and get his off the books for next year. Doubt it happens

Staal might get a 6th. gms are still stupid.

I don't really believe they'll ever trade Scott Laughton. I think he'll remain here for the duration of his 3 year contract. They didn't want to trade him before a "rebuild" year for a 1+2. They're certainly not trading the only letter wearing member of their team during a potential playoff chase. They'll make up another excuse over the summer.

My guess is they trade 1 starting defensemen (maybe Staal too) and call it a day. And only because it's a logjam anyway. I'm skeptical any forward is being shipped.

The more recent stories cast doubt on the 1&2 offer, that it was part of a much larger deal.

Which make sense, it's hard to imagine St Louis, which was cap strapped, offering a 1st and 2nd and taking on Laughton's $3M cap hit. Instead they gave a 6th to take on Hayes' $3.5M cap hit. That left them with both picks and the flexibility to dump a player to make cap room, and the draft capital to pay someone.

As GM I look at this team and simply do as little as possible.

I'd look around to see if I can move Staal, Walker, Seeler, Atkinson, Ristolainen. Laughton if people are offering 1sts.

If someone is Desperate for Hart, I would definitely move him for a GOOD haul, and call up Sandstrom.
I'm calling up Andrae for sure.
Attard, Tuomaala, Lycksell, Laczynski, Desnoyers, Allison all are options we can look at to call up. If they can't keep up, it'll be time to move on from the older ones.

Do I look at Zegras? Yep.
