Proposal: You are a rebuilding team looking to sell? Montréal has a bunch of picks for a center

  • We're expecting server maintenance on March 3rd starting at midnight, there may be downtime during the work.
LA is indeed deep at center. Byfield is the best option but unlikely to happen. Former Caufield linemate Turcotte on the other hand may be woth a gamble.
And the UFA crop is devoid of offensive centers.
Why would LA move Turcotte. He has finally started to contribute and is on a seeetheart deal. Also LA center depth is not good enough to move any of our centers. Well unless you want Lewis.

Barzal's been a mess this year and scores at a 54pt pace. A 9m cap hit for a 54pt player is laughable, NYI will be paying team to take him off their hands. He's been barely a PPG player in his career, with several notable down years, and he's not got any special bona fides in terms of intangibles etc. He's not known for his physical play or his defensive acumen or his shot.

I'm not sure what you're expecting in terms of trade offers but he will be moved for middle6ers, prospects, and picks at best.
if only nhl teams didn’t actually scout players and just cherry picked stats off of NHL dot com you would’ve made a really salient point here

I'd be looking for a 1st-ish/2nd line center to play behind Suzuki. Dach is a good player but he's made of paper, Dvorak is bad and Evans, while good, ain't good enough to support a 2nd line. Young, 60+ points or more center, is what I'm looking for.

Who is available?

Since no can do even the least amount of work for their low-effort ask; who are you going to pick off?

This is the list of player >.7ppg & 26 or younger. Happy hunting.

Posting basic stats isn’t cherry picking but I think you knew that. If you wanna cite what NHL teams really do, they really value cap space and they really don’t like 54pt 9.1m cap hit forwards.

They f***ed up not keeping Monahan.

The Canadiens have enough young players, I think a veteran center makes more sense in this situation. They're trying to exit a rebuild, go with someone who already knows how to do it.

Ya just throw away our rebuild for a 37 yr old.
how are we throwing away a rebuild?

First off....Sid would be our top scorer this year. Probably stays that way next year.

Secondly, the following players would be 27 or younger at the start of next season,

Laine - 27
Suzuki - 26
Caufield - 24
Slaf - 21
Demidov - 19
Heinemen - 23
Dach - 24
Newhook - 24
Guhle - 23
Hutson - 21
Reinbacher - 20

Coming soon is
Hage - 18
Mailloux - 22

An argument could be made that those picks should be traded for a younger 2C or another top 4 RD. And those would be valid arguments. But our cupboards are currently jammed packed. And moving draft capital over the next two years is okay with me. We have very little room for picks drafted 10-32 anyways. Moving those picks is not "throwing away our rebuild". Look at those names above as our top 9 and add Crisby...then Hage. Our rebuild should be done, not dependant on 3 1st rounders over the next two years.

Personally I'd take Crosby at that package and target Hage as a replacement 2D when he ages out.

No need to be rude lol

Plus, most of them listed will not be available

Moving Dobson and Barzal to get back something that might be ready in 3-5 seasons however is just stupid.

I absolutly do not agree with that

Keeping players until they're out of their prime to than sell them low, is, IMO, a waste of assets.
I'm more in the school of "selling high and ripping the band-aid as soon as posssible"

I guess I am a gambling man. If it were to happen at the TDL.....I'm gambling that we make the playoffs. If that happens, those 1st rounders are.

Calgary 1st: 11-20
Habs 1st: 17-20
Habs 1st 2025: 17-32

The hit rates on those picks are fairly low. With Hage still coming and our depth at D....I roll the dice. Ultimately it is a risk/reward scenario. I take the risk.

I got you

I guess I'd take the more conservative route haha

So, OP wants a 1st/2nd line center for 1st round picks and B+ prospects.

Cool, so does almost every other team in the league.

I'd make a better offer than most of them, I'm pretty sure
I'm going big game hunting

They actually might have

Quoting only counting stats from an injury riddled year is disingenuous. Not one GM interested in winning wouldn’t take Barzal on their squad at his cap hit.

MTL fans have been posting trade offers for the 54 point winger the entire season. They probably all want him because he is bad and overpaid. S peaking poorly of him on a message board does nothing to diminish his real life value.

So according to the OP, Michael Hage, Jacob Fowler, Joshua Roy, Logan Mailloux, Oliver Kapanen and Owen Beck are in the table. Add in Emil Heineman and Newhook.

I think it’s fair to say a 2nd line C is what we’re aiming for. Not necessarily looking for a 1st line C.

OP offered way more than just a 1st round picks and B+ prospects. You’ve got two picks (10th and 16th currently), Michael Hage, Mailloux, Beck, Roy, Kapanen and our 2026 first round picks on the table. I bet roster players like Newhook and Dach would also be available for a trade like this one.

There’s plenty of value there for a team that wants to reset or start their rebuild. I’m not going to name names on who Montreal would be targeting but I’m sure somewhere there’s a GM that would be salivating at the idea of getting those assets for his 2 C entering his prime or being in his prime if said GM is looking to start a rebuild.

The problem is that having too many of these young kids with dog trash veterans to “teach them how to be pros” would just turn the Isles into Chicago situation with a better goalie. Not worth it no matter who the youth is coming back. You move out the aging veterans and then see what you have with the prospects while maybe signing a couple depth pieces to short term deals. The Isles need to do what Washington did last summer, not sell off the world and hope they win the draft lottery (which they won’t because it’s the Isles).

...Hage is probably not on the table unless it's in a Big Swing deal for a young-ish established #2 C...just wouldn't be the smartest move on Hughes part and he continues to state that the future is where his head is...
