I think Chinokov has the potential to be a superstar in this league. Matching his spend with his deadly wrister is a compelling combination

A guy they took in the late 1st just scored 9 pts in 5 games. That's a sign that they made a good choice.

Especially when he was on nobody's radar at all, the draft announcers had no notes on him. It was completely out of the left field and it was a bullseye. The whole trans-siberian line is brilliant performance by Jarmo and scouts. Danforth is another one.

Based on what? For what reason?

There's no better drafting team than this one. The future is bright because of Jarmo and drafting. Like it or not.

Wasn't drafting him in the 1st round seen as a bit of a reach / weird pick, considering he was overaged and all?

It's pretty early still for them, but Chinakhov has scored 11th most points in the NHL of that draft class and there's only one player drafted after him who's scored more. For this season he's 10th in P/GP. Maybe looking at it right now favors him a bit since he's been so hot, but just that he's even capable of having such a hot streak is a good sign.

Time will tell but for now it looks like a very good pick.

I think he was projected to go in late second or even third round

So we're declaring draft hits/busts on 5 game sample sizes now?

Unless the guy is the best player of the draft, selecting an overager in the first round who almost assuredly would have been there in the second 2nd round is, by definition, a bad pick.

Then again, there aren't a ton of other names later in the first round that stick out - Lapierre, Forrester, Barron, Greig, that's about it.

You take your guy when you want or if you hear another team is circling him, like i believe it was the Islanders and Mason, Howson heard he was on their radar so he grabbed him in the third round, which I believe he was just the back up at London so taking him that high could be seen as odd. Jarmo maybe thought Chinakov wouldn't be there in the second so he picked his player, draft position be damned.

Never said it wasn’t. Yeah 9 in 5 is good (being a +1 in those 5 could be better). Fun fact, that stretch also contains 3 of the 4 multipoint games he’s had this season - and the Jackets scored at least 5 goals in all of those games.

But I am going to hold off on patting Jarmo on the back when Chinakhov has played 116 games, and everyone in his draft class is younger by a year or more. That’s not very fair to the other guys in the draft. Jarmo reached on Chinakhov, he bet that he would be better than the guys drafted behind him.

And there were other guys there that made sense to reach on - Peterka, Grieg, Neighbours.

Jarmo decided to reach in the first round because he traded away our second round pick in the Dzingle trade. (Duclair + 2 2nds for Dzingle).
There's no better drafting team than this one. The future is bright because of Jarmo and drafting. Like it or not.

Don’t get me wrong I like Chinakhov, but we just need to see more, and see it consistently.

Anyone who has watched the Jackets over the last several years should realize we should probably wait before proclaiming someone is a good pick or bad pick. Development is not linear. Heck, it isn’t even in one direction. Look at Sillinger and Johnson as recent examples or go back and think of older guys like Steve Mason. There are guys who find success elsewhere like Karlsson. There are plenty of guys with skills who didn’t have the brains, heart, hockey IQ, or work ethic to become great players - Zherdev, Milano, RyJo. There are guys who don’t want to be here like Carter and PLD. Can we give the guys some time to become who they will become before pronouncing the successes or failures?

That said, I do like Chinakhov’s wrister.

I think it’s insincere to categorize a pick as being bad if the player isn’t the best in the draft. Assuming a player can be selected later is only a theoretical tradeoff of value. Sure, maybe, they could have squeezed an extra draft round’s worth of capital out of the selection by taking him later. If he’s there. And if that player selected outperforms their draft position, then it’s proof positive that the selection was a good one. The overage consideration is moot - the player is eligible for the class and is trending to be among the best at the point of selection.

We really don't know that. He scored goals in something like 5 straight KHL games in the week before the draft (the draft was in the Fall).

Jarmo decided to reach in the first round because he traded away our second round pick in the Dzingle trade. (Duclair + 2 2nds for Dzingle).

Again you don't know that. You're just saying it.

There are ways to go get a 2nd rounder (we did to get Texier), they made the judgment that it wasn't worth the risk of losing out on Chinakhov, based on the intel that they had (intel you and I don't have).

Why are we commenting on reaches for a 2020 draft? Maybe it was a "reach" at the time but probably not so much anymore. Regardless, wait 4 years before commenting and I'm sure the order would look differently.

Chinakhov is progressing nicely and the wrister is nasty. Lots of people were writing him off and now can see the potential. I believe he's a solid top 6 goal scorer. If a playmaker attribute develops, we're looking at a potential superstar.

The ever-changing “toilet seat” perceptions and evaluations of the younger Russian guys (Chinakhov/Marchenko/Voronkov) has been fascinating to follow. Same can be said for Johnson/Sillinger.

Don’t think I’ve ever been as high on these guys that most have been, or ever as low. Seeing Voronkov play against NHL players to start, you could see he was ready, skating be damned. And with Sillinger, the opposite. Fascinating and unbelievable that we have wasted his AHL time and that he was kept on the roster over Voronkov to start.

Something that is interesting, is that all seem to have a very unique/individual style.

Jarmo didn’t have a second round pick. He had one shot and he took it on Yegor. It’s beginning to look like he hit the bullseye. Shrewd pick in my book.

There’s plenty of reasons to criticize Jarmo, but this is just reaching for a reason.

It is not reasonable based on the data we had/have?

Just like it is reasonable to think there were other (better) moves that could have been made to fit Gaudreau instead of trading Bjorkstrand? I don’t know that either. But I think you agree with me on that front…

Yep they did. And they have to be right on it. But we won’t know that for years.

It's unreasonable.

Teams trade up or down all the time, the fact that they didn't trade down tells us that they didn't want to risk someone else taking Chinakhov. Smart move. Taking Yegor in the 1st had nothing to do with only having one pick, because a trade down option is always there somewhere in the next twenty or so picks.

Like you might not get good value dropping from 3 to 4, depending on what other clubs are doing, but 20ish to 40ish is always an option.

I'm not sure he was projected to be drafted at all. TV guys literally had no clue who he was.

As recently as a week or two before the draft he wasn't on some draft lists. I think it was Pronman who did a 7 round mock and Chinakhov wasn't on there. But the KHL season started before the draft and Yegor looked amazing, and scored in like 5 straight games. Everyone knew he was going to get taken, maybe very high. But it was a mystery. Folks saying 2nd or 3rd round are just offering a guess.
