I think the Ticket was talking about this. Sturm was suggesting they move hockey to the summer olympics (just one suggestion) so there wouldn't be any disruption. That was just one of several suggestions.

Think this will just be the NHL reason publicly why they'll pull out. They haven't had anything other than money to really fight on, now they have this. They'll definitely use it to their advantage as much as possible.

Hockey is the biggest draw of the winter olympics, they already have plenty of big draws for the summer olympics, no way the let it move to the summer games.

I agree, but it's also the biggest draw thanks to the NHL players being there. And NBC/Olympic committee has not done enough to entice the owners and league to stay there IMO.

That suggestion by Bob Sturm has already been talked about by the NHL and the IIOC. Bettman asked them to switch hockey to the summer, and they already declined.

Exactly, the NHL wants to be able to use the Olympics to sell their product, but the IOC won't allow them too. To be honest the NHL has every right to be irked by that. The NHL is assuming the risks (Injuries during the games, but also those that might occur due to the condensed schedule), the olympics gains all the benefits with no risk by having the NHL players there. If I remember correctly the main issue for the NHL was the ability to use clips and images from the games to help promote the NHL, which would seem to be mutually beneficial. More popular the league, more popular the sport.

Especially when you consider that the Olympics are an important gateway to introducing casual or non-fans to the sport and by extension the NHL.

If they make the World Cup of hockey everyone has been talking about, I won't care if there are Olympics. That would be perfectly fine.

The IIHF should be happy with that, and the NHL would love it. Soccer does both though ....

Canada really couldn't generate anything on those PPs and USA looks more creative at even strength. They've got to watch some of those turnovers in the middle of the ice coming out of their own zone though with only a single goal margin.

Lucky bounce off an American D for Canada, 2-1. It had been textbook closing out of a game/defending a lead until then.
