Their stats almost similar in numbers but Adin Hill has stronger cases for him (They won them the cup)

Thompson: 46 RS games, 4 Playoffs games, (0.908 SV%/2.7 GAA) (0.921 SV%/2.35 GAA)
Hill: 35 RS games, 3 Playoffs games, (0.909 SV%/2.71 GAA) (0.932 SV%/1.7 GAA)

Hill is still better than Thompson in playoffs (he maintained his performance from cup winning year). Painful but reasonable reason is him over Thompson.

Has to be the reason. No other real rationale for Vegas, who needs to create more cap space, to trade a serviceable 1B goalie making...less than league minimum.

Fuhr and Puppa were both on Toronto around the same time in the early 90's but I don't know if they ever crossed.

Also feel like maybe Jablonski backed up Theodore in Montreal at one point?

The last team to have two right handed catchers as their primary tandem was Columbus, who had Steve Mason and Matheiu Garon as their duo from 2009-11. Garon also backed up with Jose Theodore on the Habs in 03-04 (Garon also backed up Theodore from 00-03, but he was the secondary backup behind lefty Jeff Hackett each year so I'm not counting them). So it's happened twice this millennium for three total seasons. We're at kind of a low-point for RH goalies right now with only three getting regular playing time last season (other being Vejmalka), so it's surprising to see another RH tandem pop up now.

They'll have 8.5 from Mangiapane/Eller and Bear's dead cap, plus whatever the Cap goes up by. But they also need to figure out Chychrun. There are some moves they could make, but there will definitely be some hard decisions.

I think they’ll definitely be able to re-sign him and Chychrun (Dowd needs a new contract as well if they decide to keep him). If they need to clear some space I could see Milano and/or TVR being potential moving pieces. Then next offseason when it comes time to re-sign some other guys you have Ovechkin coming off the books. The Caps seem to be in an okay cap position, helped by some major value contacts in Protas and Strome.

Since buying capfriendly the Caps have only made majestic cap-moves.

I have zero doubt they will get all the pieces they need for the exact price that gives spot on value, simultaneously being more than fair for the player in question.

The most undervalued steal of the summer. Capfriendly was UFA for anyone to bid.

It's wild to me that so many teams missed out on Thompson, I've been advocating for the Penguins to acquire him for years. I think he inherently carries the risk of any goalie after you sign him to an extension, but I don't know how Washington can justify not keeping him.

He's been good in every season he's been in the NHL, so I don't really understand why Vegas didn't give him more rope as a starter.

I heard on a podcast recently that there may have been some personality/maturity concerns regarding Logan from the Vegas side. I can't remember who said it but it was definitely a guest on one of maybe three Sportsnet 650 shows I frequent.
 
Management is a little bit concerned, per Lebrun, that an early move will disrupt the tandem chemistry, since both Caps goalies are UFAs and technically are platooning. They would probably go pretty big and pretty long where Thompson's next contract is concerned, but are not likely to give much of a raise to Lindgren, if at all.

That seems to be why nothing has happened yet. He's happy and they are happy and that probably means a deal gets worked out, but the resulting impact on Lindgren might be delaying movement from the team. As they end the platooning situation and migrate shortly to more Starter-Backup roles, maybe that's the trigger for talks.

Goalies are unpredictable but management is very impressed (not unlike how they felt about Lindgren last season, and he turned back into a pumpkin this year. I'm sure that gives them pause with respect to doling out a big contract to Thompson).

That makes sense. Always a good idea to keep the competition in place for Lindgren/Thompson or else one (or both) could really sag. That and Thompson I'm sure wants to prove a lot of people wrong and establish himself as a premier goaltender in the league.

Vegas also thought that it was much more their defensive environment rather than his talent ...

He's not a very serious guy and seems to like to have fun and laugh bad stuff off based on interviews and watching all the post game locker room win videos. Last night after almost 200 straight shutout minutes he gave a goal up and kinda shrugged like "who cares can't stop em all!" I could see where if a team atmosphere wasn't loose they could see him as not being focused enough or as not a fierce enough competitor. The Capitals team culture is a great fit for his personality it seems so far though. It's a be who you are and we'll make it work kind of locker room.

Out of curiosity, was the vibe with the Caps in their Cup season similar to this year? I know there are a lot of different personalities but it's still the same Grand Pooba.
