The Caps made some awesome offseason moves and are looking like a legitimate contender right now. What was originally supposed to be yet another season counting down the goals to Gretzky’s record now seems like one where they might both do that and be able to grab Ovi another Cup for his legacy.

I only have a cursory understanding of the Caps cap situation. I know Backstrom and Oshie are both on LTIR and their contracts end this season.

With that said, would the Cals be open to a package involving Panarin (with some amount of retention) for Leonard to make two runs at the Cup with Ovi before he retires?

Rangers grab Perreault’s teammate and add a hard nosed, north south player. Caps add a superstar, Russian countryman, elite playmaker to try to put them over the top.

Artemi Panarin had a 120 points last season and is on pace for a 100 points this season playing on a brutal Ranger team.
Most nights it’s seems he playing 1 on 5 hockey.
I would like to read what is in the package but at first glance if he was to waive this year the Ranger organization would receive massive offers, especially with salary retention.

With Washington's current cap situation, it'd take too much retention and therefore too much added to Leonard for them to bite i think

Huge cap number so doubt it’s realistic. I think it would require taking a cap dump more than retention otherwise you’d probably need to pay for someone else to eat some. Drury would do it if they are completely out of playoff contention otherwise doubt Dolan signs off on it. Playoff money is too great.

Would I do it as the Rangers? Yes.

Would I do it as Washington? Maybe. Don’t forget Panarin has been mediocre in the playoffs but if you think he can get you a cup…? Also, teams don’t really trade bluechippers. Even those swinging at a cup. Picks are way more common.

I know if the Rangers were a slam dunk playoff team and someone mentioned trading Perreault for a high salary player like Panarin then people would flip.

Those first few years of cost controlled Leonard are incredibly valuable, and they need to re up Chych and their goalies.

The draft rights to an unsigned college sophomore whose rights expire in 2027 for a 100-point forward under contract for the rest of this year and next?

If so, the Rangers had better hope the player signs, and that he turns out to have some impact.

There's a lot of downside risk here, maybe for both the Rangers and the Caps. It's a shot in the dark.

Would have to be Panarin 50% retained (~$5.8M) for Leonard + Mangiapane ($5.8M) to make the money work.

I would probably do it as a Caps fan but I don't think the FO would and I understand why not. I also think there is zero chance Dolan would move Panarin anywhere in-division, let alone to the "horrifying act of violence" Capitals.

Panarin The Friendly Playoff Ghost might be the last player the Caps should add at this point. Before even getting to the fact that virtually every marquee playoff rental not named Mark Stone tends to flop and disrupt the acquiring team year they're added.

Only player on the Rangers who slots in really well is Cuylle at 3LW next to Eller, but I imagine the Rangers would ask for the moon. If there was a deal to be made around Lapierre + 2nd I would jump on it since they have similar long term upsides as top 6 forwards and are of similar age but Cuylle is better and more of what we need now and Lapierre will be behind Strome and Dubois for the forseeable future. Otherwise look elsewhere.

Yeah what a huge nailbiter it would be for Rangers fans, waiting to see if a highly desirable college player decides to sign with their team or not

There'd have to be some additional (and not small) pieces from the caps there if the Rangers are both retaining 6ish million and taking back almost 6 million too. Leonard isn't nearly enough to bridge that gap, as good as he is.
