Confirmed Trade: [WSH/LAK] Pierre-Luc Dubois for Darcy Kuemper (no salary retained)

Nobody "won" this trade. This is just two teams swapping problems.

It takes a certain amount of pure denial to credit Blake with moving out a player that he had no business acquiring - again. He has a staggering level of incompetence in reading the terrain in front of him. Celebrating the acquisition of a 34 year old retread with three years remaining on his deal of $5.25 million is like getting praised for only getting the clap from that street walker instead of something worse.

I agree with the above. Two teams swapping shitty contracts. One player is below average but has less term and money. Other player is average to slightly above average but is paid way too much and for too long.

Either way, doesn’t move the needle for either team.

Maybe PLD can be the tank commander for the Capitals in a couple years? They will certainly be able to hit the cap floor more easily. The last 4 years of PLD’s deal will be hard to swallow for them but like others have said, who really cares if the team is awful to begin with.

Correct. That Washington will probably end up a loser in this deal is completely unrelated.
PLD could also turn into a reliable 80 point #1C for the rest of his contract. It doesn't change the outcome for LA.

Somehow technically seems like both teams won this trade. Something I don’t think anyone saw coming

If PLD can play a shutdown role with no pressure to add offence he can be really helpful to a club. He's a really good 2/3C. Just so long as point production isn’t put into his plate.

I thought Kuemper was on the scrap heap after last year, never been so happy to be so wrong.
To be fair, he was. As was PLD. Great job by both guys, both franchises, to turn things around.

This season he's actually been doing both in DC, playing that D matchup role while still putting up pretty good points himself (19g, 44a, 63p in 76 games). He's 3rd in assists on the Caps, 4th in total points. And he's second on the Caps in +/- (a stat which should have the usual caveats, but I personally think it can have meaning within a single team.)

still a L for the kings, kings gave up vilardi for PLD and while kuemper is playing like vezina candidate he is 34.

Vilardi is always injured yet needed for a run, but the fact that his injuries make him unreliable, the Kings instead acquired a Vezina caliber goalie w/ a cup under his belt, a player the Kings' rivals are having a hard time scoring against

Iafallo, Kupari are none factors

So Vilardi + 2nd for Kuemper is good

Blake managed to avoid a disaster, this is a good outcome for LA all considered

But sure, take the L if that brings you some happiness

The key is there isn’t pressure on him to produce points. Hes able to play a defensive role, which is where he’s best. The points (imo) are a consequence of the lack of pressure. Hes able can play relaxed in the offensive zone.

Agreed.
And if that was your original point and I misunderstood it, my bad. ;)

Blake deserves zero credit for avoiding a disaster he himself created.

Everyone in this trade happened to get lucky.

The Capitals aren't looking to tank anytime soon. Given the players they have locked in long term and the quality of their prospect pool. They're looking to be competitive for years and years and years even after Ovechkin heads back home to Dynamo Moscow. We have seen nothing but great from PLD this year. Washington under Carbery has become a great place for hockey careers to thrive.

Also as a fan of both teams. I'm so glad this trade turned out the complete opposite of what we all feared it could become.
