Confirmed Signing with Link: [WSH] G Logan Thompson signs extension with the Capitals (6 years, $5.85M AAV)

What a coup getting him for a couple 3rds

27 year old starter with a league minimum cap hit, and no team in need of goaltending help was willing to top that?
McCrimmon wasn't about to trade Thompson to somebody in the WC which limited the buyers to EC teams only, and most of those were already set in goal by the time of the trade. But certainly there were some EC GMs who whiffed on a good opportunity. Congrats to Caps.

I've been a fan of his for years and never understood why he wasn't higher regarded around the league.

This contract is just like Blackwood where it has the risk of going sideways like Jarry, Campbell, Merzlikins, Petersen and many others, but Washington couldn't justify letting him walk.
It could also end up as a steal. If Thompson puts up the kind of numbers he is putting up now for the next 5 years, he will be one of the best goalie contracts in the league for a long time.

Jarry was a 2x all-star...

A lot can happen in 1-2 years.
I'm just glad Ken Holland isn't in charge anymore for the Oilers. He probably would have made a play to get Jarry, lol.

The market for goalies has been readjusted lately. Almost six million dollars is not ideal but is probably not that big of a deal if it's a shorter contract.

But for 6 years? That's a big gamble that's unlikely to pay off.

Nah, with the cap going up and quality goalies in very high demand, even if Thompson slips they'd be able to deal him somewhere at a small loss at worst, particularly at the TDL when all the desperate GMs get their wallets out.

Good call. No team with an elite Russian goalie on a big deal has won a Cup lately.

Apart from those three Cups for Florida and Tampa.

No doubt, it's not like both those guys play in tax free states or anything. Verhaeghe for sure got max value out of Florida, how will they ever stay competitive
