They were going to do an even 35 but then that Oilers game last week got him an extra 0.1.
At this point, signing any established goalie means you’re exposing yourself to the inherent volatility of the position.I guess I'm happy for the player but I just cringe at the contract in a vacuum. Not sure how many examples of goalie contracts becoming albatrosses there needs to be before GMs stop doing it but I guess there hasn't been enough.
Classic. Then when they've had 3 years of consistent performance they're too old to pay for. Time is a flat circle.I wouldn't give long term contracts to any goalie unless they've had a minimum 3 years of consistent performance. Just so much voodoo - this could be really good or really bad.
Yeah, I mean that's just it - what can you do really as the market has dictated that level of value. That's because several GMs have given those deals out.At this point, signing any established goalie means you’re exposing yourself to the inherent volatility of the position.
What would you do if you were in the Caps’ shoes?
Yea this is pretty much how I feel. The mid-market goalie contracts of recent history are littered with a lot of bad and a few atrocious deals with basically only one real success (Binnington) but also at the same time what else are you going to do?I've been a fan of his for years and never understood why he wasn't higher regarded around the league.
This contract is just like Blackwood where it has the risk of going sideways like Jarry, Campbell, Merzlikins, Petersen and many others, but Washington couldn't justify letting him walk.
I mean what are the alternatives for gms? Guess they think they sign a goalie for that price and term betting its a good deal. If the goalie falls apart, you jarry him. IMO Thompson will live up to this contract quite easily.I guess I'm happy for the player but I just cringe at the contract in a vacuum. This is really the question that needs to be asked. Almost never. The goalie either wayyyy under performs or becomes injury prone. Demko, Darling, Pettersen, merzlinkins, jarry, campbell, jones, grubhaeur, binnington. I put demko cause of injuries and binnington though avg, his numbers have got worse since the cup run. I hope thompson can be the exception, but it’s against all oddsHow often do these goalie deals actually turn out well over the entire life of the contract?
Has binnington’s current contract been a success?Yea this is pretty much how I feel. The mid-market goalie contracts of recent history are littered with a lot of bad and a few atrocious deals with basically only one real success (Binnington) but also at the same time what else are you going to do?
Jarry was a 2x all-star...
A lot can happen in 1-2 years.

I'm just point out that they tend go bad relatively often enough that should make GMs say "hey, goaltending sucks right now, we're not giving you 6 years. Here's 2. We'll go from there".
A little surprised L. Thompson would sign this, as he likely could have gotten more than that had he gone into UFA. Feels like he took a "it's been half a season" price instead of betting on himself to continue to play well for the remainder of the season and secure a larger payday. I guess he was eager to get a deal done and secure himself as rich, as he has never made more than $800K.
Yes, a shift to the Yzerplan is certainly in order for them to get to the next level.
yeah but he could still have re-signed with Washington just a higher number had he waited longerOr maybe he likes the environment and the vibe that the Caps have?
He's Tied-14th in Goalie Wins since signing. I say they got what they paid for.Has binnington’s current contract been a success?
His first year ELC - .927
2 yr x 4 mil - .912 and .910
Then on his current 6 mil per - .901, .894, .913, .898
The problem is there are SO many genuinely crappy GM's that if your team's GM plays hardball the goalie will easily be able to get a payday elsewhere. So I think you have to roll the dice in these situations.Yeah, I mean that's just it - what can you do really as the market has dictated that level of value.
