Confirmed Signing with Link: [WSH] G Logan Thompson signs extension with the Capitals (6 years, $5.85M AAV)

They were going to do an even 35 but then that Oilers game last week got him an extra 0.1.

I guess I'm happy for the player but I just cringe at the contract in a vacuum. Not sure how many examples of goalie contracts becoming albatrosses there needs to be before GMs stop doing it but I guess there hasn't been enough.
At this point, signing any established goalie means you’re exposing yourself to the inherent volatility of the position.

What would you do if you were in the Caps’ shoes?

Put in the work, get paid. It's how it should be. Route differs and some more appreciated fall off the path. I love it when these "longshots" make it.

Yeah, I mean that's just it - what can you do really as the market has dictated that level of value. That's because several GMs have given those deals out.

I'm just point out that they tend go bad relatively often enough that should make GMs say "hey, goaltending sucks right now, we're not giving you 6 years. Here's 2. We'll go from there".

Elliotte mogged again, this time by Kevin on the highway :slaugh:

I've been a fan of his for years and never understood why he wasn't higher regarded around the league.

This contract is just like Blackwood where it has the risk of going sideways like Jarry, Campbell, Merzlikins, Petersen and many others, but Washington couldn't justify letting him walk.
Yea this is pretty much how I feel. The mid-market goalie contracts of recent history are littered with a lot of bad and a few atrocious deals with basically only one real success (Binnington) but also at the same time what else are you going to do?

I mean what are the alternatives for gms? Guess they think they sign a goalie for that price and term betting its a good deal. If the goalie falls apart, you jarry him. IMO Thompson will live up to this contract quite easily.

People surprised about the size of the contract (although the rate was already set by other signings), but it turns out being a goalie that’s 27 and has a 22-2-3 record with a 0.925 SP and a 2.09 GAA in this years NHL is coming from a pretty solid negotiating standpoint.

It's always an even riskier roll of the dice at the goalie position.

Longevity in goal tending is somewhat hard to come by and the ones who do have lower long term risk - you aren't getting them for $6M.

Side note: The Capitals front office has been absolutely amazing as of late, so I think most of us in the Caps forum are disinclined to question their wisdom at this particular moment.

I think this is a fair deal and even if he falls apart, it is not a cap crippler. Not like spending 11.5 on the position.. :sarcasm:

A little surprised L. Thompson would sign this, as he likely could have gotten more than that had he gone into UFA. Feels like he took a "it's been half a season" price instead of betting on himself to continue to play well for the remainder of the season and secure a larger payday. I guess he was eager to get a deal done and secure himself as rich, as he has never made more than $800K.

How often do these goalie deals actually turn out well over the entire life of the contract?
This is really the question that needs to be asked. Almost never. The goalie either wayyyy under performs or becomes injury prone. Demko, Darling, Pettersen, merzlinkins, jarry, campbell, jones, grubhaeur, binnington. I put demko cause of injuries and binnington though avg, his numbers have got worse since the cup run. I hope thompson can be the exception, but it’s against all odds

Has binnington’s current contract been a success?

His first year ELC - .927
2 yr x 4 mil - .912 and .910
Then on his current 6 mil per - .901, .894, .913, .898

Jarry was a 2x all-star...

A lot can happen in 1-2 years.

Lollllll 2x all-star.

Jarry was showing signs a regression when he signed his recent deal and has never had a season like Thompson is currently having. The Thompson deal may not turn out but comparing him to Jarry is comical.

You need really big balls to go against it like the Avs did with Georgiev.. and it only worked for 1 out of 3 years.

Or maybe he likes the environment and the vibe that the Caps have?

yeah but he could still have re-signed with Washington just a higher number had he waited longer

He's Tied-14th in Goalie Wins since signing. I say they got what they paid for.

The problem is there are SO many genuinely crappy GM's that if your team's GM plays hardball the goalie will easily be able to get a payday elsewhere. So I think you have to roll the dice in these situations.
