I've been a fan of his for years and never understood why he wasn't higher regarded around the league.
This contract is just like Blackwood where it has the risk of going sideways like Jarry, Campbell, Merzlikins, Petersen and many others, but Washington couldn't justify letting him walk.

I guess I'm happy for the player but I just cringe at the contract in a vacuum. Not sure how many examples of goalie contracts becoming albatrosses there needs to be before GMs stop doing it but I guess there hasn't been enough.
Vegas owed us for Stephenson.

This is a good deal for the Caps.
He gets more than this on the open market if he finishes at his current pace and doesn't collapse in the playoffs.
Assuming he was open to signing before the season, not going early probably made them have to include an extra year or two of term and an extra 1M to the AAV. They got off pretty easily considering how well he is playing.
