Confirmed Signing with Link: [WSH] F Aliaksei Protas signs extension with the Capitals (5 years, $3.375M AAV)

People never learn to just chill on players who've literally never scored at this pace in their entire career.

I don't think the thought is he'll definitely be a P/G player this year, just that he'll be well worth his contract.

6’6” BBFG (Belarusian Big Friendly Giant) drafted in the 3rd round in 2019. C/W with impressive touch for a big man and high hockey IQ, but initially a brutal skater.

Signed last season to one of those ‘potential-based’ extensions that have become en vogue with GM’s lately.

He made huge strides (get it) working on his skating and lower body strength over the summer and is much more explosive this year. Not a big hitter but uses his frame and reach well in the corners and winning puck battles. Is skating on the top line with Ovi and Strome and is a big part of why that line’s been an analytics darling so far.

Don’t think anyone expects him to be an all star or to maintain a ppg pace but he has the potential to be one of the better value contracts in the league.

Also, his younger brother Ilya was a 3rd round pick of WSH last draft and so far has 10g,7a in 11gp for Windsor in the OHL.

His brother is looking pretty good in the OHL so far too, Caps landed him with a 3rd round pick last year. Top 10 in points and goals. For a guy that’s 6’5” at that age he seems to have a lot of potential.
Soon Belarus will start

Protas - Protas - Sharangovich
Levshunov - Kolyachonok

Kolosov

That’s a quality top line from the NHL

Anyone that has watched the Caps the last 80-90 games knows this dude is an absolute monster.
Both Wilson goals last night came off strong plays from Protas.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a lot is made of PLD being overpaid, and people aren’t wrong (as good as he’s been for the Caps this year), but the fact that Protas and Strome combined make less than PLD over the same length of time makes it feel okay.

Caps got out of Kuemper’s contract for PLD.

Huge win.

I’m honestly so frustrated with how badly Dubas has fumbled the bag in PIT given how logical 80-90% of the Caps moves have made.

signed a deal too early, think he could've made 6+ million easily if he waited till this offseason.

Congrats Caps fans, a steal of a deal with term.

I like Kuemper and I’m happy that he’s doing well from what I’ve seen in LA, but yeah, he just wasn’t fantastic for us, sometimes it just doesn’t work out with a team/player. I’m glad the trade seems to be a win-win, LA gets out of a long term contract and Washington gets a player that has been absolutely fantastic for them so far. It’s just icing on the cake that the Caps were like, “well now we need another goalie, how about we trade a couple mid round picks for Logan Thompson?”

Who is this caps gm everything he's touching is turning to gold
It had been Brian MacLellan, but he recently stepped down (or maybe stepped UP is a better description) to take on the higher role of Pres. of Hockey Ops. Chris Patrick was appointed as the new GM just before training camp.

In regards to Protas, that certainly is looking like a fantastic value contract going forward. The guy is a beast. I cant way to see how his brother develops. I think many Caps fans would love to see a Protas-Protas-Wilson line in few years.

Super, super off-topic and long, but I find it interesting and maybe others would too...

To answer your question, Brian MacLellan was Senior VP and GM until this past summer (July 8), when he moved into a President of Hockey Ops role and was succeeded by Chris Patrick - of the "famous" NHL Patrick family - who was promoted from associate GM. Many Caps fans assume that Chris Patrick was heavily involved in their moves leading up to July 8, possibly through last season as a sort of understudy / apprentice, preparing to take on the GM job.

insert rambling comments here:
It's been interesting how the Caps have stayed in-house for their last 2 GMs, and they've only had 3 total since 1997. I have no idea if this is intentional, if it gives them any advantage or not, if it's just a case of "best candidate at the time", or maybe part of some overall organizational strategy. But the last outside GM hire they made was George McPhee prior to the 1997 season.

When the Caps decided not to renew McPhee's contract following the 2014 season, MacLellan, who was hired as a scout in 2000 (he was childhood friends, junior hockey teammate, and college teammate with McPhee), was promoted to the role. When MacLellan moved into the POHO role, Chris Patrick, who had joined the Caps in 2008 as a scout and worked his way up, was promoted to Sr VP and GM.

When Chris Patrick was promoted there were some cries of nepotism since his father is Dick Patrick, part of the ownership group who has been with the franchise since 1982. Dick Patrick was brought in originally in 82 to lead the hiring of a new GM - David Poile.

Interestingly, despite the family background, Dick Patrick wasn't involved in hockey before then, he was a lawyer that worked in real estate development. And prior to joining the Caps in 08, Chris Patrick wasn't working in hockey either, he has an MBA and had been working in investment banking and private equity, Hell, McPhee worked on Wall Street during offseasons when he was an NHL player, went to law school and clerked for a Federal judge after he retired. MacLellan also has an MBA in finance and worked in investment consulting before joning the Caps in 2000. I guess they have a type.

Last 4 Caps GMs:
David Poile: 1982 - 1997 (outside hire, decision was led by Dick Patrick, contract was not renewed in 1997)
George McPhee: 1997 - 2014 (outside hire, contract was not renewed in 2014)
(1999: Ted Leonsis buys the Caps)
Brian MacLellan: 2014 - 2024 (14 years within org prior to this role, "promoted" in 2024, sort of, maybe intentionally stepping out of intense day-to-day work)
Chris Patrick: 2024+ (16 years within org prior to this role)
