Confirmed Trade: [WSH/BUF] Alex Tuch (signs 8 years, $10.5M AAV) for David Kampf, 2027 3rd round pick

Too bad for Buffalo that they couldn't get a deal done with Tuch. That's gonna be a not insignificant hole to now fill. Though they have the capital to go out and do it. And at least they got a decent pick for his rights.

For Washington...paying a 3rd rounder to "jump the line" isn't really a big deal. Not when they managed to get him signed to more of less the sort of AAV most people expected from him...maybe even lower. Though the term is kind of yikesy...there's probably going to be a lot of that this year, with teams trying to get the insane AAV down by mortgaging the future like that.

My mind can’t comprehend some of these contracts. I remember Jake Sanderson’s contract was ridiculed for being too much. Now it’s a contract for a top-4 D.

This. And not for nothing, but the Caps have a pretty good track record of managing to offload difficult contracts as the player ages.

The contract is fine. It’s the Kempe deal. It’s what we thought he’d get all along.

I admire the Caps for going for it. Tuch will still be 30 the entire season. Kyrou will be 28 the entire season. They aren’t adding geriatrics, they are spanning the gap between the old era with Carlson gone and Ovie more a depth scorer if he comes back and their really impressive young core of Leonard, Protas2, Hutson…with guys like Thompson, Chychrun, Protas1, etc very much in their primes.

I think they are a Hronek-level blueliner away from being a real Cup threat. It’s a really good mix.

Weird move for the Caps, must be giving it one more go with Ovi. That contract wont age well.
They are going to be good with or without Ovie. They can roll three waves of scoring lines now, have one of the best goalies in the league, have two legit and different blueline offensive weapons and not many teams have a better U21 trio than Leonard-Hutson-Protas.

The whole point of getting Tuch is to help extend that competitive window beyond Ovie, it's not a desperation play to bring a declined Ovie back.

No long-term deal any major pending UFA is signing in the NHL today is going to age well so that's kind of a moot point.

I do think it's possible Buffalo takes a step back from this and losing Byram (depending on other moves obviously), but I also think these are the right moves in the long run.
Taking a step back doesn't necessarily mean not making the playoffs. They won the division last season, there is some wiggle room.

Edit: They also had a poor start to last season.

Soooooo......Washington bros.......

Were you guys at 50 contracts? Because that's literally the only reason why Kampf would be traded here, right???
That was my guess when I saw Kampf was in the deal a while after it was announced. I mean, does BUF even want him?

Puckpedia says 39/50, which seems surprisingly low. With Greenway out and maybe Malenstyn moving on I guess I could see Buffalo being interested?

Doubtful. They have Kozak needing a spot, they can bring Dunne back and then Danforth is coming back from injury and still under contract IIRC. Seems like some sort of paper move.

I hope to hell the Sabres bring back Malenstyn.
