Not a draft geek by any means. But going safe is the only clever thing to do with the 1st overall pick. So I voted Wright.

You don't change your mind because a guy has a good 3-months stretch when the other one has been projected to be the 1st overall pick for years. You don't score 59 goals at 15/16 in the OHL without being an exceptional talent. And most importantly, I like how the kid speaks. I think it's crucial for a prospect to be good with the media and good to manage the pressure as a 1st overall pick in a hockey hotbed like Montreal. And I'm 100% sure Wright is the kind of character who would handle Montreal very well. He gives me strong Suzuki vibes.

someone came to our threads and said one of your "main draft reporters has gone on record saying Habs brass had a change of heart and that they will take Slafkovsky, he's putting his reputation on the line"

is there any truth to this?

Did they give a name? Because based on what I've been reading, Slafkovsky isn't the guy they'd take instead of Wright. Alain Chainey said he'd take Slafkovsky first overall if he was Montreal, but it feels like Montreal would take Cooley over Wright if they're making the choice.

I go with Wright. I'd also pick Nemec above Cooley and Slaf, but I admit it might be unpopular. I could live with either Wright, Nemec or Cooley.

Perhaps Mathias Brunet... But he doesn't have many connections to the team. He's also really bad at evaluating prospects and gets all his info from a failed scout who believes Connor Geekie is the best prospect. Brunet said in 2013 that Jonathan Drouin was better than McKinnon, so we know that if he doesn't like Wright... He should be a hell of player.

Officialy, the team said they didn't yet made their final decision, but we still expect them to take Shane Wright.

Agreed........not to mention, the kid has stated he wants to play in Montreal.....................not many potential stars have ever said that.
Kid has a great attitude.

To be fair with Arizona drafting 3rd probably all the top 5 kids desperately "want" to play in either Montreal or NJ ;)

Will be interesting to watch live the face of the guy drafted by Arizona ...

If it's Cooley, he might like. US boy not used to big stages... But, in reality, it's often the canadian players who love playing in soutern "markets" (if there is any) like Florida, Texas, California... Big p***ies.

No, doesn't mean they won't pick him but very few have been that vocal about not picking Wright, in fact there's pretty much only 2 of them and both don't have much reputation left to put on the line

Reportedly during the combine the Habs had dinner with both Wright and Cooley, but not Slafkovski. If that is any indication, it seems that they've at least narrowed their choice to those two.

They met Slaf one time in finland during WC. And then they interviewed him this past week and they made him come back in the evening for a much longer interview. 3x times.

We'll see what happens. No doubt they've interviewed several players several times in the course of their due diligence. However if I'm a betting man I still think they go with Wright at number 1. The extra interviews could be preparation for trade-down scenarios if they occur, not just who they like at #1.

So it seems that Wright isn’t a Lapointe type of guy. I wonder how much influence that will have on the Habs choice.

Why even worry about that? Several people on this board keep plugging Bedard into future Habs lineups, yet the chances of the Canadiens getting the #1OA pick again next year are not very good. Top 5, yes, but #1 is unlikely.
I agree - I was responding to someone who said let's draft Wright and get Bedard next year. I was just taking his suggestion to its logical conclusion which isn't ideal for us.

He prefers guys with drive and caracter like Lehkonen, bournival, kostopoulos. Over high IQ guy, like suzuki, o’reilly, krejci. .
