WPG 4 : LAK 3 - So... 2nd place? 2nd place is good, right?

Was watching this game with interest because it had major implications for home ice advantage in the WCF (if my Hawks can make it that far).

Both LA and CHI managed to lose tonight after leading 3-0 at one point.

Thank God the Hawks managed to take it to OT and secure the loser point, because it means they get home ice advantage if they play y'all.

Not a overreaction, just repeating what many saw at the deadline
.Dean didn't fill up the defensive hole we have.This team keeps losing in third period.Again hope I'm wrong but this defense keeps losing games in the third.

Scuderi can't make a pass under any sort of pressure.

Can't count on Muzzin. When you're the 2nd highest paid D, the team needs to be able to count on you.

I bet we're going to see a lot of this standing up in the neutral zone because teams don't respect the Kings fast break or ability to get them the puck.
 
Keep in mind there was no Martinez on D tonight, and McBain makes for a poor replacement. Would have much rather seen Gravel, but Sutter would rather snub a promising young Dman, when he could have rested someone like Scuds instead.
 
Both the season and last calendar year flew by. That 0-3 start feels like yesterday, and it feels like that meaningless last game against the Sharks last year was this morning. Crazy.

The defensemen on this team will need to get things figured out. If the Kings lose in the playoffs, that probably means they will not have. If the Kings win, that will probably mean they will have found a way to adapt to this particular part of the team. Doughty will have to be playoff Doughty. Muzzin will need to do something to get good again. He's been in a fog lately. We'll see what the situation is with Martinez, and whoever else is out there will have to be able to handle some pressure without fumbling the puck. Quicker and crisper.
 
At least this year when we look back fondly on all the games we choked away against **** teams, it will be in reference to winning the division and not making the playoffs.

The bright side.

Not great. All the same, I'd rather have it than not.

By the way, why do you all want to win the division so badly? Playing SJ means less travel, and I think Nashville might be more dangerous than San Jose anyway. But that's just me.

The gap in possession we have between 1st and 2nd is the same as the gap between 2nd and 17th. Yet we have the third worst penalty differential.

Kings don't generate a lot of opportunities to draw penalties. Possession has nothing to do with it. Guys take penalties when they're dumb, or they get burned. Kings don't have a style that routinely burns other teams. It isn't necessary to drag down Brown/Lewis when they're shooting if you're already in position.

Follow through of a stick after a shot/pass is not a penalty. Lewis made contact with the puck. Get out of jail free card for going full Kieth.
 
Been saying all along that I was ok with second. Even today I said I would be ok with a loss.
It is just they way they lost that is upsetting.
Gaborik not coming back soon, fine Pearson has stepped up some.
Martinez out worries me. No Dman has filled that void yet.
Here is to the Ducks losing in OT tomorrow

It's the only thing the Ducks are going to win and I wanted to take it away from them. :)
 
Scuderi is awful, he just cannot make decent plays anymore. We need Gravel in the lineup for the playoffs, Scuderi won't cut it.

Ya, that time this team limped into the post season as an 8th place seed and had to rely on Quick all season because they couldn't score... remind me how that turned out.

While this is a different team, you can't count this team out when they reach the post season. Recent history has proved this.

Let me guess, Dean Lombardi is a horrible GM now because the Sekera trade didn't pan out last season?

Dean is a great GM, just wasn't able to fill the need we have on defense.
 
Like we all always mention. We don't have Mitchell whose forte was controlling the gaps, settling things down, and be a calming influence. Voynov has his faults but he can get you out of trouble with his pure abilities. Greener although slow of foot, but is a much better skater than McNabb or Schenn and a much better at handling the puck versus Schenn. When he was healthy he could really zip and head man the puck up the ice. Our defensive depth will no doubt be our Achilles heal.
