Great effort, if we play like this every game or most of them we will not be close to drafting in the top 5.

Kadri, Rielly, Hunwick, Winnik, all played very good games.

Loved the effort.

I thought that Rielly was the best player on the ice over the last 40 minutes other than Price!

About as good a result as we should be expecting on most nights. This isn't a good team. It's not meant to be a good team. If they are competitive and the games are watchable, I'm content. Far better than most nights last season.

I'm never going to root for losses during the game but I'm pragmatic. We need another top end talent in our prospect pool and that is likely something that we see this year. Losing games isn't a bad thing. I'm not going to cheer against goals and cheer for giving up goals but after the game I'll shrug and put another tick in the Matthews tally.

:amazed: Seriously? Ah well let's see how long he keeps Percy out of the lineup.

The Percy love affair is still strong I see. The guy is a mediocre prospect and after a handful of good games his play tailed off significantly and somehow he's still living off that.

That was like night/day compared to the last five seasons. Maybe Babcock does know what he's doing.:D

It's probably unrealistic to expect an effort like this every night. The system should help us become more consistent but we still aren't a very good team and unless we're gunning at 110% (as we were tonight), we're going to find it difficult to compete. Even the games we are able to compete in, often we'll lose, because we just don't have the finish others do.

I really liked our new first line. Boyes was far better than I expected him to be, while Kadri seems to have another gear this year, and the two meshed well with JVR. I felt the Bozak/Lupul line still had that last season vibe. Not that they played horrendously but I think maybe it might be better to have those two on separate lines to spread out the inevitable defensive lapses. Komarov looks to be back to his usual self, which is promising (plus he hit Subban hard, so a giant A+ just for that), and Holland looked pretty good too. Winnik is reminding me why he stood out last year. I agree with those who said Arcobello and Parenteau were probably the weakest of the forward group. Little bit curious to see Grabner on the bench and you have to figure he'll draw in for one of those two next game.

On defense, much, much improved. So much more structure in their game. Hunwick was beyond all expectations. A really good game for him. I know after we signed him, some opposition fans came and told us how underrated and smart he was, and he showed that. He looks like he'll really compliment Phaneuf well on the first pairing. His interview between the first and second also impressed me. The guy has a real air of genuineness around him. I liked both Gardiner and Rielly's games today for the most part, and surprisingly Harrington's as well. Marcinin was definitely the weak link but I do wonder if he stays in the lineup. We can't send him down without putting him through waivers so perhaps he'll continue to play to see what we got. It's going to take a while to rub that Edmonton awful off him. Bernier played very well overall but that goal cannot go in.

As for the Habs, looks like it's going to be an another season of being a one-man team for them. Too bad (not really). They have the best goalie in the league and the rest of their bunch is just not good enough to go anywhere. Also, the new coach's challenge is going to be a disaster for them. Their forwards make their living with subtle goaltender interference.

No points for moral victories but it's easy to be impressed with the effort and structure shown by the Leafs. I loved how the D moved the puck quickly and efficiently. Gardiner looks reborn. Babcock's a genius.

Rielly was pretty awesome late in the game, he's gotta do that all the time and he'll be a star in the league.

Wouldn't hurt if he worked on his shot either.

good game

latest

Feel the same way.., Daisy...! I thought that that was the best defensive game we played in a long, long time... :)

Bernier really has a bad record of letting the first goal of the game in.. (did so, in 33 starts last season.. wow!) .. and personally, I hate the whole concept of pulling the goalie.., unless there is less than 90 seconds left in the game, because at that point, the players usually don't have more than 90 seconds of energy left for a shift.. LOL!

First game with the "Moneypuck" boys.. and I thought it turned out a lot better than I expected it to.. :handclap::nod:

We were in it until the end and we didn't get hemmed in our zone for long stretches. I was into the game until Pacioretty got the EN breakaway. I can deal with this & I don't actually want to pull my hair out watching a game! LOL

Really strong games from Kadri, Rielly, & Hunwick. Liked what I saw from Harrington as well. He's gonna be great for us!

Leafs played a very strong and entertaining game and were the better team on the night.

Bernier stops that 1st one and it might be a different outcome.

Babcock system immediately noticeable improvement.

Kadri, Rielly and Hunwick real strong games.

Bingo! Totally agree..! He was even smiling a bit, in the 3rd.., because the boys were still giving the effort...

Sorry.., if I seem offensive to Carlyle, Horachek and Wilson.., but..

NHL.com:
The Canadiens said they could see the influence of Babcock on his new team.

"It's a lot like Detroit's obviously with Babcock coaching them," Gallagher said. "Their defense does a good job taking away time and space and they really push the line when it comes to interference. It was never easy playing Detroit and I think it's going to be the same here in Toronto."

There's no reason the Leafs can't continue to play this style that frustrates the opposition. This is only possible because there are no special stars pushing back at the team concept. I really like Babcock's vigilance to have his team not break from it even when trailing.

Certainly one of the better efforts by the Team in a long while, minus the usual suspects, Bozak/Lupul.

The Kadri line and the entire defense were particularly good.

Nice to see the Captain with the loudest ovation during introductions.

I swear I woke up and the hockey world got weird overnight.

i don't see people "rejoicing"

those who want to start tanking - are happy, because we lost.
those who wanted to see a seismic shift in philosophy (ie: not be hemmed in) - are happy that it happened. (maybe not so much that we lost, but just that at least they didn't get hemmed in).

they had a chance to win the game. they didn't.

people are mollified. but again. i don't know if they are as you put it, rejoicing

The Pens only won one with Crosby and Malkin. :dunno:

Why do people talk as if it's cheating to have a good goalie? Yes, the Habs would be much worse without Price. The Caps would be much worse without Ovechkin, too.

I think what people mean is you exchange Price, still with a top 15 goalie, that team doesn't win that many game. They are an okay team riding the back of Price(by far the best goalie, if not player right now). IF with the Pens you replace Crosby with another top 15 center, the Pens are still a good team. You replace Ovechkin with a top 15 forward, the Caps are still a good team. On the other hand you replace Price and the Habs would struggle to make the playoffs.

I think it's okay for people to point out that a team is being carried by one player, and is not in itself a great team.
