everyone is available for trade if the return is great enough, but, to get a return great enough to move on from Matthews, that would need a HUGE package with more than 1 elite piece (depending on who that was)

The moment Matthews signed a 4 year contract extension with the Leafs told the franchise he was not willing to win long-term for the Leafs.

Most players sign 8 year deals with their team for financial stability and guarantee money and the ability to see the process through of winning.

Not Matthews or Marner we’re willing to commit long-term to this team and the result of commitment shows on the ice. Why the Leafs decided to give NMC clause AND up front bonus money on top of that made NO sense.

It’s like a sales person making $100k commission on ONE deal what do you think they would do for the next 3 months with that money? Go on vacation and not come back to work until they had their fun.

This is the problem with these players, they get their bonus money and when playoffs come they got no more coming in so they check out ASAP until the next bonus comes on July 1 UP FRONT!!

This is why the Leafs should move on from Matthews and the rest of the bonus babies as they just want to get paid and not get hurt in the playoffs,

I think if Marner doesn’t re-sign, that might be the trigger for Matthews to approach management for a trade.

If Marner leaves, Matthews’ emotional security blanket leaves. In essence, it’s an instance where three siblings that were divided into a 2 vs 1 dynamic, becomes 1 vs 1.

I think looking over at Nylander, without Marner in the room, sets up a different uncomfortable dynamic for Matthews’ ego.

And as we’ve come to understand profoundly, Papi appears to have particular ownership rights to a level of comfort that’s non-negotiable.

I'm pretty sure that it's the other way around. He started his career on the wing, but they have been grooming him at C to replace Kopitar. From what I've heard, he's excelled.

Edit: As far as the back issues. I can't source it whatsoever - but I know someone close to the team, and ignore it if you don't believe me - and I was told the exact same thing.

The problem is positional.

The only way they can come close to replacing Matthews is if they receive a 1C or at least a very young 2C in the trade.

You can find top six wingers every free agency to help replace the loss of Marner, but the same can't be said of centers like Matthews.

And the Leafs don't have the draft capital to make taking a step back worth it until 2027/28.

The earliest the team can semi seriously consider a trade involving him is the off-season before his final under contract season

I don't see how NMC makes it harder to "win a trade", he either agrees to waive or he doesn't.

That said, I wouldn't trade him yet either. The D being so old is the big issue, we have probably one more year, two at best before they collectively decline hard and fast and once that happens, it'll likely take a decade to rebuild considering how empty the cupboards are. The goaltending is good, so is the D, there's a lot of talent up front, we've gone this far so may as well take one more kick at the can with Matthews.

When that time comes it will only take that long if they do it wrong.

Said it in this thread already, just because it's taken Detroit and Buffalo forever with no end in sight that doesn't mean that's how long it takes.

Depends. If they keep trading away what little futures they have left for another year or two, it's hard to see how they could make the playoffs again within 5 years. Also, you say they won't be worse than the Sabers and Red Wings but you don't really know that, they might be even worse.
