Nurse's worth is somewhat skewed by the first few years of his deal being under a flat cap. Had Covid not happened we would be looking at a cap of close to $100M. We would probably have seen a fair number of guys making more than that.
I don't think Bouchard gets $11M unless he duplicates last year's playoffs (or clos to it) and the Oilers go deep. But the reality is that we are on the cusp of a potentially massive increase in the cap. A player Bouchard's age signing for 8 years should be expecting to be over paid in the first half of his deal. Typically for me I ask, is he being paid appropriately at the midpoint for his deal. By the midpoint of an 8 year deal we could be looking at a cap of close to $120M. So is Bouchard worth 9% of the cap? In today's money that is an $8M defenseman.
If you want to look at recent contracts consider Brock Faber who will get $8.5M next year for three years. Jake Sanderson got 8 years at over $8M. Power got $8.35M.
I have argued that a two or three year deal for Bouchard in the $8.5-9M range might make sense for both players. I don't expect it to happen, but I do think it makes sense.
Andy Strickland is suggesting that Rantanen may sign with the Oilers.
