Worst NHL Player in NHL History

I bet some of the once good but injured and need to retire guys were worse in their final games than a good chunk of the typical guys we would think are the worst.
IIRC Allison could barely move in his last games.

Probably some random player from 1931 that no one here has ever heard of.

In recent history, Dalton Smith might be one of the worst players to play a game in the NHL. He has a 0,15 ppg in 500 AHL games, and 0,37 ppg in 63 ECHL games. But the Sabres brought him up for one game to be a goon and I think he played like a minute and a half in that game.

Funny thing about Smith as a Buffalo farm hand was their AHL team had a ridiculously slanted winning record with him in the lineup. But that was correlation, not causation. I'll see if I can find what their record was with him in the lineup up to that point.

We had ideas that Botterill was out of touch but that move was certainly part of cementing his unemployment.

I don't have an answer, but given that EBUGs and cup of coffee guys are eligible, it's one of them, almost certainly.

A far more interesting question, IMO, is worst NHL player in history to play at least 500 games.

TSN radio did this exercise

I remember Bill Mikkelson receiving a few votws

He was like -92 in a season or something insane

He went on the ice with the purpose of not playing the puck at all

I don't remember ever seeing him throw hands either. Should we have the "actually tried to play hockey" guys vs. the "get paid to punch face/be face punched" guys?
He did....this was probably the only reason he was in the league....big dude. Fought 3 times in the year he played 6 games, 8 times the year he played 17 games....played for 17 teams in 13 years.

Perhaps not the best criteria, but I'd look for the guy with the shortest career, like Greg Koehler, played a total of 8 seconds in the NHL and never touched the puck.

It’s hard to answer this about skaters, because the truly worst ones barely get on the ice before they’re booted back out of the league.

Easier to answer about goalies, because even a short term in the league leaves a statistical mark and often an imprint on the fanbase’s memory.

So with that said, shamelessly myself from several years ago:

If the answer isn't Ken McAuley, then it's almost certainly Gary Laskoski.

- Prior to the NHL, his only experience was at St. Lawrence University, at a time when college hockey was not good preparation for the NHL.

- Went undrafted. Signed with the Kings as a free agent.

- Through a serious of misadventures, he ended up as the Kings' starting goalie for most of 1982-83.

- His career save% (thankfully preserved in compiled game logs here) was an impressive... wait for it... .851.

- When the Kings mercifully moved on to other options, Laskoski went down to New Haven of the AHL. He played only a fraction of a season there, with a 4.94 GAA.

- That was it for him as a professional. Age 24, and retired.

This is the only footage of Laskoski that I can find on YouTube... an 8-6 loss.

THAT guy was a starting goalie in the NHL.
