In the context of what the OP wanted, Dore perhaps doesn't fit since he wasn't considered a reach at the time. He's had a nice second career as a scout, usually he's the one credited with the Bruins taking Patrice Bergeron in 2003.

That draft was before my time, but one anecdote that I read after the fact was that the Devils were confident that one of Selanne-Roenick-Brind'Amour would be there for them at #12 only to see them go 8-9-10.

How much of a reach could Sylvain Turgeon be? He had 163 pts in juniors in 1983, compared to Yzerman's 91. Genuine question.

It was really Lafontaine that was the shocker at the time. The Isles were picking #3 and the consensus was that Lafontaine would go #1 or #2 worst case. The Isles were at #3 and it seemed like there was zero chance Lafontaine would be available, but Emile Francis took Turgeon at #2 instead of Lafontaine for some reason.

In their draft year in the QMJHL:

Turgeon 163 points LW;

Lafontaine 234 points C.

It was a reach statistically, by position (winger over C) and per the scouting consensus.

In the moment it seemed like the Blues got a steal. Schwarz/Montoya was the debate that year with a slight majority seemingly preferring Schwarz. Devan Dubnyk going before Schwarz was a big surprise on draft day.

Assuming injuries dont derail Quinns career i think he ends up the better more impact full player. His skillset has way more runway to hit his peak. His shot can beat NHL goalies clean. Rossi is getting shopped right now for a reason they are trying to sell high after spending half the year with Kaprizov inflating His stats. Tremendous hockey sense but his physical abilities just limit him so much. He is tiny and below average in speed.

When you look at that draft how do you choose Quinn over Holtz as the terrible draft pick? Quinns production is way better and he has shown more upside.

All teams have a long list of questionable picks.

But the blackhawks 2000 draft they had 2 interesting first round picks. Their GM had a fixation with Russians and with 10th and 11th over the took two Russians that I had seen play and did not understand why they were taken so high. Yakubov and Voribiev. Both were built for European hockey. But Smith the Hawks GM had a well know love of Russia. But 2000 is an example of a shit draft

There's a few people that have had enough exposure to the game that actually can use an eye test. Then theres the rest who dont watch or dont really know what they are watching.

It's incredible how much nerve you have to criticize the opinions of people whose job it is to watch NHL games. Who are you to say these guys are frauds who only look at stats?

Maybe you watch the games, but your perspective isn't necessarily effective.

I'll come back to talk about the contracts signed this summer. Rossi will have a higher contract than Quinn. That's for sure. He's probably in much higher demand on the phone.

When an entire system rates Rossi above Quinn and quite significantly so after 5 years, the smart thing would be to rethink itself.

Besides, I already explained to you that I compiled the list based on my perspective on day D of the draft and that it wasn't a redraft.

In 2020, I saw Quinn after the 20th pick (I had him 26th). It's normal that I thought the pick was a waste with an 8th-place selection, especially in the context of Buffalo. Askarov would have been the optimal choice according to my reading at the time. Then it was Lundell. Jarvis and Guhle followed.

If I distort the subject by taking into account what the players have become, my list is no longer the same at all. Still, it doesn't change anything in my assessment of Quinn's choice at number 8 : missed.

A bit off topic but man, I still have no idea how Gormley didn't pan out. Heading into that draft year he seemed like he had everything you want a top 4 dman to have in his game. IIRC a lot of analysts looking at dmen in that draft had things Fowler-Gormley as clear 1 and 2 for the position. In the end it wasn't a strong defensive year to say the least (2nd best dman take is probably Justin Faulk) but Gormley being a miss is still confusing.

Virtanen was rushed to the NHL being of the CHL-NHL Agreement that prevented him from playing in the A in his 19 year old season. That ruined his development, he wasn't ready for the league IMHO.

From another thread, some indication that he got lazy after his rookie season. Joffrey Lupul mentioned on a podcast that the organization didn't really help out Chistov/Smirnov as they came over not knowing a word of English. Anaheim had some other Russians/Soviets on the roster but perhaps they had their own things going; Sergei Fedorov signed for 2003-04 but he was more in party mode than mentor mode.

I remember going to a Ducks game in the 2003-04 season and they had one of those video packages during a TV timeout where they asked players various questions. That game it was players saying which teammate had the worst car and it concluded with somebody saying Chistov because he didn't own a car. I can only imagine the adjustment to North America was a challenge especially if he was struggling with the language.

Mesar has been super underwhelming. I don't think the pick was necessarily bad, but he didn't improve at all since his draft. It wasn't a super deep draft and we still did amazing with Slafkovsky, Hutson, Beck and Engstrom.

What were the worst first round picks in history? And I don’t mean busts, I mean on draft day what were picks that GMs thought they were outsmarting everyone but were dead wrong? Inspired by looking at the 2021 draft and seeing Tyler Boucher being drafted at 10th, which was a total reach on draft day looking at rankings, and rankings were proven right. I know the bruins have probably heard enough of the 2015 draft, but I was 13 years old, and I remember thinking what the hell are they doing. Zboril was actually the pick that made the most sense compared to rankings and Debrusk was the one that turned out good, but still what the hell were they doing lol, makes me laugh when GMs think they’re out smarting everyone, I would’ve made better picks at 13 years old than Sweeney did and I’m no genius. Also feel free to add times when GMs actually didn’t prove all the scouts and fans and rankings wrong.

Rick Dipietro with Heatley and Gaborik sitting there and top 5 pick maybe you heard of him Roberto Luongo already drafted.

Since you said not a bust. He was very good for a short time , average at best for a long time, and really bad for a short while .
