It’s always an overpaid 3 year deal for a crappy D-man. BM just can’t get away from it
They wouldn't have matched Penner no matter what. And the rest is quite a bit hindsighty, especially the part about repeating.
I don't think Bert was bad because of anything to do with Andy Mac, it just wasn't a good signing and he had to be bought out a year later. Schneider was at least good in his year here.
no issue with schneider. he was brought in in case niedermayer stayed retired and he had a good season anywaysBertuzzi and Schneider led to Macdonald being a cap casualty when they eventually have to sign Selanne and Niedermayer. There was no need to sign Bertuzzi and Schneider, no one really goes back to back champions anymore, it had been nearly 20 years when the Pens went back to back in 2016 and 17. The Ducks were gonna have a cup hangover no matter what, no need to waste money on those 2 guys.
They could have even been able to match the Penner offer sheet had they not signed Bert and Schneider as well, Penner was good with the Oilers but keeping ur 2C in Andy Mac is more important than Penner.
A top 9 of
Kunitz/Getzlaf/Perry
RobNieds/AndyMac/Selanne
Moen/Pahlsson/Marchant
Probably goes to the conference finals in 08 even with moving Kunitz to line 1 and Rob to line 2 due to Penner being plucked by Edmonton as that saves cap space.
Then another year later when Bobby Ryan has his breakout:
Bobby/Getzlaf/Perry
Kunitz/Macdonald/Selanne
Is such a great top 6 that probably carries them over Detroit in 09 because well Andy Mac is superior to who their 2C was in 09 playoffs.
Losing Andy Mac probably cost 1 finals appearance and possibly the team's 2nd cup win in 09.
don't forget ducks legend paul maraNick Boynton, Andreas Lilja, etc.
While I agree that its hindsighty, Burke didn't really wait at all. Considering we had Ryan in the minors you probably can move forward without Burtuzzi. Scheinder honestly played well here.Again, very hindsighty. It forgets just how serious about retirement Selanne and Niedermayer were, Burke took a big risk in somewhat waiting for them at all. Also forgets a good bit else about that year.

Steve Eminger.
I don't get the hate Stoner is getting. He was overpaid, that is true but he was very steady and dependable bottom pairing guy who knew his limitations. That Stoner-Vatanen pairing gave the most consistent level of play. Easily better signing than Sutton, Allen, Shattenkirk etc.
Contract Length matters too. Sure, Sutton was a pylon when he was here but got way less in salary and term. I agree the the Allen contract is close (along with bertuzzi). But Shattenkirk? Proof that people on this board are way too reactionary, he's barely played 20 games for us.
20-5-1 after Teemu came back, 11-1 right out of the gate if I remember right. He didn't wait to replace them because he couldn't. They weren't contemplating retirement, both basically did and Burke begged them not to file anything.
That team was unreal so I don't have a ton of complaints either way. People only remember a weird first round series but they were close to unbeatable with Scotty and Teemu in the lineup.
He was the quintessential pylonI will give an honorable mention to Bryan Allen. To put into perspective just how bad he was, I have a Bryan Allen t-shirt I bought at the Ducks store for only $5. You can’t buy any shirt of an active player at the Honda Center for $5. I was at a Ducks/Kings playoff game and saw a whole rack of them. It was a pity purchase.
Allen was the perfect blend of a big man who could not hit, fight, score, or skate. His falling down against a rush by the King’s summed it up.

How is it going to hurt.Shattenkirk’s contract makes it the worst signing. Tampa Bay had 2 D-men whose contracts had been terminated by other teams; Shattenkirk and Bogosian. These two were so bad that former teams had to buy them out. Neither were re-signed by Tampa Bay.
They had both proved that they had lost enough skills that their only future signings would be short term in the $1M range. Any GM who couldn’t see the future is a complete idiot. Even with Bieksa there was a track record and a reason to have some hope.
But Bob signed Shattenkirk to 3 years and the final year he gets almost $5M. If you hate Shattenkirk now just wait a couple more years.
Think about all the young D-men we have moved out and none of them were as bad as Shattenkirk. That $4.95M is really going to hurt.

Stoner in 2nd place in this thread is quite shocking to me.
He at least played for a decent amount of time here and was okay. Souray was On IR for over 80% of his contract
