Worse NHL olympics ever?

Before the CAN-USA game, non-Canadians were saying TC was weak, they were lucky to be in the easiest Group, that they would get trounced as soon as they played a "real" team, etc.

Now, after the final two games, the story changed: Canada dominated the whole tournament, they never had any competition, etc. The backtracking is hilarious, I guess it would be pretty embarrassing to lose to a supposedly weak team that barely squeaked by Norway, Finland, and Latvia. It's so much more comforting to tell yourself your team never had a chance anyway.

Same thing for the "excitement" factor. Before being completely shut down against TC, most American fans thought the tournament was plenty exciting. Phil Kessel was the best player ever, the American offence was so dynamic and explosive, so on, and so on.

Now, after being completely outclassed by the Canadians, and utterly embarrassed by the Finns, this Olympic tournament is apparently the most boring ever?

I'll admit, the ending was rather anti-climactic. CAN-SWE, there is nothing between those teams. Add in the fact that SWE had no chance of winning without their full roster and, ya, it was an uneventful final. I would have much preferred USA or RUS in the final.

The size of the rink and poor ice conditions also contributed to an overall product that was less exciting than what we were treated with in 2010.

Still, even taking those things into account, I think the opinion that this tournament was the "worst ever" is heavily influence by massive butt-hurt.

Except your comment about rather seeing USA VS Russia in the final, I agree.

Great tournament. Loved every minute of it, especially watching certain teams fall flat on their faces.

They have already gotten old. We get it Canada! You're really good at hockey!

Honestly, outside of Slovenia's games and the Russia/USA game there wasn't much entertainment in the entire tournament. Regardless of who won Gold it was alot more boring to watch. Especially when someone scores and you can say with confidence "oh its over now". Thats no fun no matter who you cheer for. Honestly if thats how the Olympics are going to go from now on, Id rather them not go over anymore.

I feel the same way. I don't care if we were the team that coasted to the top, it isn't right. Lower seeded teams should not be playing two contenders and Canada should not be playing teams that are the worst in the tournament. It sucks out the competition. The best team should have to endure the most and come out victorious. Canada beat Norway and Austria and got a bye. That is ridiculous. They should have been forced to compete from the beginning, as well as every top 4 contender. Who the hell thought this formula was a good idea?
If you are a contender you get 2 statistically easy games and one difficult one
but if you are a team that is seeded 100th and barely made the tournament, here is Canada and Russia, have fun.
Moronic.

I think there was nothing wrong or boring about this tournament. That said, I believe it would be improved by having "just" the top 8 countries play. Besides that, I would also make all games count more, I find it extremely silly that really only the last three games (QF, SF, medal game) really mean anythig.

Watching that defense perform was a thing of great beauty, though I can see why some people might not be quite as enthusiastic. To be honest, the highlight of Olympic hockey for me was easily the women's comeback in the Gold Medal game. That's the kind of contest I hope to experience at the Olympics.

Latvia and Slovenia rising, plus Finland upsetting Russia and wrecking the USA were great moments IMO. I agree that the semis and final weren't very exciting, though. Smothering play prevailed, and while us hockey enthusiasts appreciate that it's not too great for the casual fan.

It wasn't entertaining for TC to go against old man ozolins and a bunch of nobodies coached by a nearly blackballed head coach and PEPPER an echl goalie who kept them in the game?

I am not a big fan of big ice but the games were good, the russia us game was good, the can Latvia game was good, the us Canada and Canada Sweden games were close despite Canada carrying most of the game.

its not sc playoff good, but ten again nothing is.

The preliminary games were good and the quarter finals were fun to watch. Just the semi's and the Gold Medal game were insanely boring. I'm sure Canadian fans found it amazing because they ended up winning. But it was boring.

I appreciated the defensive aspect of it all, it was a thing of beauty. Just the games intself outside of that were boring. It makes me really want the NHL back asap.

Most uncompetitive Olympic hockey tournament I've ever seen. The USA should have been able to compete with Canada, but were so thoroughly outcoached that they had zero chance. They brought the wrong coach and system for Olympic ice.

The tournament was terribly boring, and I'm glad this is probably the last time we see the NHL season put on hold for Olympic hockey. I'd take watching Buffalo and Edmonton battle over who is the worst team in the NHL, over every single game in this tournament except Russia vs. USA.

I'm an Oiler fan, and I cringe at the thought of going back to watching Oilers hockey after watching this beautifully orchestrated Canadian team. I thoroughly enjoyed every game of this tournament I watched.

USA vs. Russia and Latvia's goalie vs. Canada were the only things I'll remember fondly.

Maybe it was all the pre-tournament hype but these games felt strangely hollow.

It wasn't even preseason NHL good.

Hockey is never boring if you like the sport enough

This. I'm not exactly surprised by all the threads that are popping up the past 48 hours, but yet I am a bit shocked at the same time (simply based off the fact that I always assumed if you took the time to discover, register, post at and consistently visit HF you must actually love hockey) to find that I'd be very comfortable wagering that most of the posters who have STARTED threads asking if player X choked or if these Olympics were the most boring watched very little of the games and just read box scores. Likewise, the posters make the most passionate, tireless arguments to belittle a country or player's performance seem like they barely watched 20 minutes of the games. I wish I share their super powers, of being able to look at a box score and know everything about the game it pertains to.

Question for everyone posting here. Did you watch the games live or after you already knew the outcome?

With the time difference a lot of games were played in the middle of the day so it wasn't happy hour time. Do you think that affected your enjoyment?

I have to admit I wasn't glued to the majority of the games. USA Russia and the Latvia were my favourites.

The Gold medal game was pretty early Sunday morning in my neck of the woods.

Team Canada's performance
Selanne's final tournament
Switzerland beating Czechs
Latvia beating Switzerland
Slovenia beating Slovakia
Slovakia with a near comeback against Czechs
USA Russia shootout
Getting to watch KHL players like Antti Pihlström of Finland. That guy has jets like Grabner.

I really do think that these olympics were boring. Possibly the most boring with nhl.
I mean not a single ot in the elimination phase, flat-out boring.
The only thing i'll remember about these games is the usa vs russia and number 8 last games.

These type of comments are gonna get real old real fast.

No, four years of endless bragging ahead... Canada was supreme in this tournament, but has been severely challenged in many others, no matter, the superpower of hockey has gotten the superpower mentality nailed pretty good.

Anyway, a slight disappointment, some of the matches were surprisingly conservative and even lacking tempo. I don't think it can be only or even primarily the ice size as there very many really crazily good matches in Turin and Nagano - also some pretty boring ones in Vancouver and SLC. In my view Vancouver never was significantly better than Turin. Maybe the top tier is getting narrower, not wider. It certainly was worrying how badly some countries did and how easy Canada's victory looked.

On the women's side, the two US/CAN matches were fantastic and thrilling.

On the men's side I quite enjoyed when Canada faced Latvia, Finland and the US. But the final game was way too much of a cake walk. It did feel a bit hollow.
