GDT: World Junior Championships 2013 - Discussion II

I think the worst part about Hamilton and Murphy not playing good, is all the playing time they got. It seemed like they didn't step their game up like the rest of Canada's defense. By no means can I say Dougie was the best Canada defenseman like I thought I was going to be able to.

That being said, this team was very undisciplined from the get go. I still see major flaws in terms of coaching and as people have said the selections were questionable. I think something Canada should think about doing is getting coaches from outside of the CHL to avoid this problem in the future. Pat Quinn comes to mind as some one who can be used as an example. I also wouldn't mind if they approached some coaches who don't have jobs (Ted Nolan anyone?) I think it'd be a great way for coaches to strut their stuff as well.

Spott has been wrong in many areas lol. I didn't agree with the murphy choice, neither did I agree with his goalie and captaincy choice. It's seriously sad that we are this slow with a full blown lockout. So it's not surprising he's not using the right players, I mean Mackinnon was in the fourth line...should tell you otherwise lol.

As I said, the Murphy choice wasn't terrible if he as used propely. Spott's use of him was a much bigger mistake than the selection itself.

I don't really disagree with Subban being the starter, but how can you not give Binnington a start somewhere in the round robin? That was just rediculous. Even if you know in your mind that one guy is the starter, you have to make is seem like you're giving both guys a chance for the job.

Personally, MacKinnon and Drouin would have been on my on-paper 4th line to start the tourney. Just like the goalies, however, I would have given them a chance to play at some point. If they accomplished a lot, they'd get more ice time.

Spott seemed oblivious to which players were actually having good or bad games. It's like he submitted his ice time charts before the game, and had to follow them regardless of what happened on the ice....

I think it is evident Canada should have picked Mathew Dumba, those on the inside said this team's leadership was too quiet, I would have even gone as far and may have included Ryan Pulock. You want a PP specialist, you go with an offensive D man that can actually put up points, Ryan also has a weapon that not many have in the tournament, the best slap shot in junior hockey. To me picking Reinhart and Murphy was akin to picking players to win a bronze, and this is where we are today. I said as much when the picks were announced, so my perspective is certainly not 20-20, it is how I felt then and it is now. Look at the USA's most effective D men this tourney, all are mobile with big shots. Trouba, Mccabe, and Jones. We didn't have that. Hamilton fell well short, Harrington lacks offense, Reinhart, Murphy, list goes on.
 
Is it possible that the IIHF told Hockey Canada that Canada winning all the time was not good for the World Junior Hockey Championships and that may explain the poor player selections and coaching decisions the last few years? Just wondering?

Nah I think it's more that other nations have put more into player development over the last 10 years and now it's starting to pay dividends (i.e. Sweden) ... Additionally in Europe, a lot of Canadians have gone over to play pro hockey there and eventually settled there having families, so that has been influencing and helping young players develop too. The Swiss are an example of that, where their system has been taught and developed by a Canadian coach.

With regards to the USA, I think after 2002 Olympics losing to Canada left an embarrassing impression so they've put a lot of money into hockey development and now they're really starting to see results.

In short, there is no longer that large gap between Canada, Russia and the rest .. There is greater parity within international hockey as player development in other nations has grown leaps and bounds within the last 10-15 years so Canada cannot rely on just half-assing international events assuming that they can just throw their best players together and win. They've got to adjust and respond to other nations implementing systems and be weary that the skill level of other countries has grown immensely.
 
Hockey Canada needs to find a way to select the best players and have them play as a team much earlier than a couple of week before the start of the WJHC.

I have no clue how to do it, but, throwing a team together based on a few summer camps and then call the final selected players a team isn't working any more. We need to do something to give us a better chance to win with the other countries coming closer to parity with us.

You make it seem like they haven't won a game.

They were undefeated going into the semi-finals and lost a single game elimination match.

I know it's been 4 years without a gold but there's nothing wrong with the development camps and how they do things.

Player selection this year was off though... but that's mostly a coach thing rather than a process thing.

Murphy is trash. Period. Has great offensive tools though. Awesome skater, rocket of a shot, but his hockey IQ is CLEARLY lacking... His games suited for a men's league lol

I agree with both of you. I actually thought RNH looked way ahead of most players in this tournament, which is understandable. In fact, Drouin looked more on the same page as RNH than Huberdeau or Sheifele.

I'm not sure any personnel changes would have made much difference, when you look at how badly the team played overall against the U.S. I thnk the team really missed Ryan Murray, but most teams were missing a couple of key players. Everyone gushing about the USA, not trying to take anything away, but I thought it had more to do with Canada playing bad. They were VERY flat out of the gate and dug too deep a whole to recover from. I'm pretty sure if they played again this weekend, would be a completely different game.

Other thing to consider, number of the US players come through the US National Development Program, while the European teams get group together more often. Mabye something for Canada to consider, getting a squad together more often and playing some games against other teams as prep and also to assess players. Difficult with number of games in major junior, but maybe shutdown schedule for a few weekends and do a subway series type of event (ie. WJ team against OHL all stars for example)
 
What pisses me off is how no one is talking about Sweden. They've been the best team this tourney, and have made the finals back to back. The states are a good team, but without Gibby, where would they be?

Yeah .. Sweden is a legit hockey powerhouse these days and should be place in higher regard

No. I just think evolution has taken place. This is good for hockey, as it's more competitive. Though I must say the selection process for Canada has been average. There were players on this team that I wouldn't chose, and even the coach. Sweden is really turning heads... they're taking canada's place right now. I'm sure Canada is in a slump but it's a generational gap. The days of Canada winning 5 straight old medals are gone -- other countries are getting better.
