Correct me if I'm wrong but head to head is not the first tie-breaker, it is goal differential, followed by goals for and then head to head.

So if Ghana beats Portugal 2-0 and the US loses 1-0 that would put both the US-Ghana at 4 points, with the USA's GD at 0 and Ghana's at +1 so the US would go home.

The US is still looking good though, the US will advance with a win/draw vs. Germany and should advance with a Portugal win or draw in that game.

The sick thing is this tie really doesn't help Portugal out in this game, with them being -4 in GD they really needed a win, that is what is really gross, that last goal should be celebrated more in Ghana than in Portugal.

It's akin to giving up that shorty to Boyle. Talk about taking the wind out of one's sails.

Neutral zone turnovers will kill you every time. Looked like the US player tried one too many moves and gave it up. The last shot of the game goes in.

Miscue by Bradley who's has had a relatively awful World Cup. However, it was terrible marking by Cameron and Besler as well to allow Eder to be that open.

Bradley clearly messed up at the end, but he was great during qualifying, probably our best player in fact, that is what makes this sting so much more, he is going to get ripped in the media and by people who only watch the WC. He deserves better.

Cameron had a really bad start and finish, no idea what he is doing on the 95th minute goal, the first one was a physical mistake the last one was mental.

Advancing was always going to come down with the Germany game. The U.S. needed to get some kind of point of that game regardless.

I think it was too hopeful to expect the U.S. to win both games outside the Germany game.

So in my mind nothing changed. The real positive out of this World Cup for me is; the U.S. finally looks like it can score at the National level.

Thank god, was so tired of the U.S. always looking for a 1-0 1-1 0-0 game.

Jurgen has this team attacking actually, and has picked players with PACE. The Future looks good for American National Soccer. This team is faster and more skilled, also has some good youth.

Another ESPN fail.

Have a poll up after the Portugal game asking what place the USA will finish in the group with fourth place as an option.

I couldn't agree more. We were actually threatening going forward, amazing to watch. Our goals weren't flukey at all.

As for getting through to the next stage, here's the best breakdown I've seen:

If USA gets anything from the game with Germany (draw or a win), they're through on points. A win puts them top, a draw keeps them second.

If they lose and Ghana and Portugal draw, the USA are through in 2nd on points.

If they lose and Portugal win, the USA are almost certainly through on Goal Difference- it would take Portugal hammering Ghana or Germany hammering USA to change the goal difference enough in Portugal's favour. At the moment, USA have +1 (4-3), while Portugal have -4 (2-6). In the extremely unlikely event that they ended up on the same Goal Difference and Goals Scored (probably 4-6, with USA losing 3-0 to Germany, and Portugal winning 2-0), they would draw lots to see who qualified, since their head-to-head match tonight was a draw.

If they lose and Ghana win, the outcome will depend on the specific results and other deciders. USA currently have +1 (4-3), while Ghana have -1 (3-4). If both matches are 1-0, that is not enough to tip it in Ghana's favour, as they would have identical Goal Difference and Goals Scored (4-4), so it would come down to the head-to-head match, which the USA won. If, however, USA lose 1-0 and Ghana win 2-1 or better (2-0, 3-2, 3-1, 3-0 etc.), that IS enough to tip it in Ghana's favour- although the Goal Difference is the same at 0 for both, Ghana's 5-5 puts them through ahead of the US 4-4 on Goals Scored. This counts BEFORE the head-to-head.

Bottom line: The US needs at least a draw against Germany to guarantee progress. If it's a defeat, a goal (a 2-1 defeat is better in this case than a 1-0 defeat) makes life very hard for Ghana.

I can't believe the play out of the US, an ill fated clearing attempt and the goalie spazzing out gave that first goal to Portugal.

Then that deflection instead of playing it down then kicking over the defenseman.

And how do you let them score in the last minute of play with 4 defensemen in the cross area.... did the concept of coverage just leave them.

God this team!

That strikes me as a team that doesn't know how to handle success yet, the National team is so use to losing or being down....They are going to have brain farts when success comes their way.

I meant it in the broad term of those defending against attack in that area that's all they are, sorry i'm not keeping track of 10 people on the roster when Portugal is somehow hauling ass down the sideline when 1 USA guy (and yeah i don't remember his name or what position he played) was protecting the ball in Portugal's corner against 1 then 2 guys for like 30 seconds at one point.

If Mexico ever wins the World Cup, LA may burn to the ground. They won today , and they're celebrating like they won it all.

Oh and how can I forget this legendary gif when talking about Herrera?

What's up with everybody, wanting to see Downtown Los Angeles burn up like The Bronx? :shakehead Shame on you for saying that.

Looks like my picks are becoming correct, with South Korea as my Dark Horse.

I don't know about the rest of your picks but S. Korea isn't making it past the 1st round. They have the Belgians in their last game and need a win to advance. Just don't see it happening.
