I read a few pages of this thread and think there are some really interesting points made. Time for me to give it a shot too
You are absolutely right, most games during the Olympics are not that good compared to NHL games or the games you gonna see during the WC and I can understand that Canadians do not enjoy the group stage too much. I assume its quite similar with my feeling towards the qualification "tournament" for the soccer world cup. There is literally nothing to gain as you have to advance and the games have fairly low quality and therefor its not exciting to watch. As a German however it's a highlight to see them play in a tournament like this ( we gonna make it in 2018

), going up against the likes of Crosby, Toews and all the other superstars while seeing our own best players ( even if there are only a few NHL players). The Olympic tournament is the only way German people are able to watch the best players play hockey on TV and it's only once every 4 years. It's something really special and personally it got me into NHL hockey although no one in my family and none of my friends are into it. Without the Olympic tournament I would not have one of my biggest hobby and I would have missed out on so so much. Sure from a buisness perspective the NHL probably couldnt care less, while I have a jersey, nhl.tv and a subscription to THN it's nothing compared to the WC earnings.
They trade the opportunity to grow the game for more money and I dont think Hockey is at a point where this is a good idea. To be honest, soccer is probably the only sport that should do this in my opinion. (Although they don't need to)
The world championship is like a meh tournament for growing the sport. It's on TV in Germany but it doesn't get that much attention. While it's still better than nothing, it just lacks the feeling of being something special, resulting in relatively low hype. If Germany can make a run however it probably gets some people into hockey, but its much harder than during an Olympic tournament. It would still be awesome if I can see NHL players in Cologne next year and for a lot of people a once in a lifetime experience. (I hope I can see a game in Pittsburgh someday as I do not wish to see any Pens players during the tournament next year

)
So the WC obviously has some good things to it too, the hockey will be really good and better than the hockey during the Olympics or the world championship while still having something special to it given that its only every 4 years. I dont even care about having a u24 NA team, I think its going to be interesting to see how they match up against the other teams and if/how it shows the difference between veterans and young players. Team Europe however has some positives to it but also a lot of negative things. They obviously wanted to give players like Draisaitl a chance to play in a tournament like this while coming from a country with bad national teams, resulting in representig a lot of nations while still having a really competetive team. I think they hope that a team like this gives the WC a bigger market but in my opinion it won't change anything. The tournament won't get much hype just because there is a German player in it, it won't be on national tv (the Olympics/world championship are) and you obviously cant compare rooting for your own country or rooting for Team Europe because there is a German player in it. In addition to that no one will stay up all night to watch the world cup if he is not already into NHL Hockey and I dont even know if I will stay up for a game. I dont think there will be an official stream or something, so it's basically us staying up to watch games on a low quality stream between two teams we have no connection with. Thanks I'll wait for the NHL to start so I can see the Pens and still have high quality hockey. The DEL starts in september so I rather support them and watch a few games there. (by the way will the finish/swedish league and the european champions league make a break for the world cup or will they probably lose some players?)
TLDR: People that are interested in the NHL and live in hockey countries will probably tune in, but you take away a special event for all the people who live in countries like Germany where Hockey isn't as big and probably loose out on people who tune in to the Olympics and get hooked because they see a game there.
Sorry for all the grammar and spelling mistakes, I'm sure you guys will find more than enough
