But the tournament is not during when NHL is playing.

It coincides with NHL training camps, so the NHL would have to release players. If it takes place earlier, the likelihood that players would skip the tournament grows tremendously.

3. At the 2014 Olympics Canada played Norway, Austria and Latvia, and none of those games were close to 12-0. One was even rather close.
.

This is a load of crock.

1 game was close on the scoresheet because the other team had 6 goalies on the ice.

The worst.. least entertaining hockey you'll ever watch is during the Olympics.

So much hype and only 2 or 3 games are worth tuning into.

So you think a ragtag band of talented players will be better competetion for the powerhouse nations than a lesser national team ? I don't see how Team Europe has any motivation for his other than **** YOU NHL for not giving us a proper team to play for.

It's not an international tournament.

The mission statement of the company is to promote the game to Americans and grow the game in America.

There is no other purpose for the nhl. They do everything to gain more money from the American market, only to benefit the USA.

The nhl is not even an international league, it barely has any international following.

Are people watching the Worlds and seeing what International sport is about? Enjoy it because in september not many will be tuned in to watch a money maker for an American company.

IMHO it's pretty obvious the WCup is absolutely not about growing the game in the US, or anywhere else for that matter.

There is no other purpose for the nhl. They do everything to gain more money from the American market, only to benefit the USA.

This tournament has been setup in a way to gain more money from the Canadian (and specifically Toronto) market, not the American (or any other) market.

I read a few pages of this thread and think there are some really interesting points made. Time for me to give it a shot too:laugh:

You are absolutely right, most games during the Olympics are not that good compared to NHL games or the games you gonna see during the WC and I can understand that Canadians do not enjoy the group stage too much. I assume its quite similar with my feeling towards the qualification "tournament" for the soccer world cup. There is literally nothing to gain as you have to advance and the games have fairly low quality and therefor its not exciting to watch. As a German however it's a highlight to see them play in a tournament like this ( we gonna make it in 2018:laugh:), going up against the likes of Crosby, Toews and all the other superstars while seeing our own best players ( even if there are only a few NHL players). The Olympic tournament is the only way German people are able to watch the best players play hockey on TV and it's only once every 4 years. It's something really special and personally it got me into NHL hockey although no one in my family and none of my friends are into it. Without the Olympic tournament I would not have one of my biggest hobby and I would have missed out on so so much. Sure from a buisness perspective the NHL probably couldnt care less, while I have a jersey, nhl.tv and a subscription to THN it's nothing compared to the WC earnings.
They trade the opportunity to grow the game for more money and I dont think Hockey is at a point where this is a good idea. To be honest, soccer is probably the only sport that should do this in my opinion. (Although they don't need to)

The world championship is like a meh tournament for growing the sport. It's on TV in Germany but it doesn't get that much attention. While it's still better than nothing, it just lacks the feeling of being something special, resulting in relatively low hype. If Germany can make a run however it probably gets some people into hockey, but its much harder than during an Olympic tournament. It would still be awesome if I can see NHL players in Cologne next year and for a lot of people a once in a lifetime experience. (I hope I can see a game in Pittsburgh someday as I do not wish to see any Pens players during the tournament next year:laugh:)

So the WC obviously has some good things to it too, the hockey will be really good and better than the hockey during the Olympics or the world championship while still having something special to it given that its only every 4 years. I dont even care about having a u24 NA team, I think its going to be interesting to see how they match up against the other teams and if/how it shows the difference between veterans and young players. Team Europe however has some positives to it but also a lot of negative things. They obviously wanted to give players like Draisaitl a chance to play in a tournament like this while coming from a country with bad national teams, resulting in representig a lot of nations while still having a really competetive team. I think they hope that a team like this gives the WC a bigger market but in my opinion it won't change anything. The tournament won't get much hype just because there is a German player in it, it won't be on national tv (the Olympics/world championship are) and you obviously cant compare rooting for your own country or rooting for Team Europe because there is a German player in it. In addition to that no one will stay up all night to watch the world cup if he is not already into NHL Hockey and I dont even know if I will stay up for a game. I dont think there will be an official stream or something, so it's basically us staying up to watch games on a low quality stream between two teams we have no connection with. Thanks I'll wait for the NHL to start so I can see the Pens and still have high quality hockey. The DEL starts in september so I rather support them and watch a few games there. (by the way will the finish/swedish league and the european champions league make a break for the world cup or will they probably lose some players?)

TLDR: People that are interested in the NHL and live in hockey countries will probably tune in, but you take away a special event for all the people who live in countries like Germany where Hockey isn't as big and probably loose out on people who tune in to the Olympics and get hooked because they see a game there.

Sorry for all the grammar and spelling mistakes, I'm sure you guys will find more than enough

Maybe we'll see Bettman make a spoof commercial mocking the World Cup of Hockey as well like McMahon did himself a couple of years after the XFL failed ? :D

Preach brother preach. What got me into soccer was the World Cup. I would never have watched it if I didn't have a team to root for. When the USA played Germany in 2002 I stayed up all night drinking a million Starbucks frappuchino energy drinks and every second was amazing. Now I have season tickets to my local MLS team and watch all kinds of soccer.

If FIFA had decided that it'd be best to just eight teams at the World Cup I'm sure they'd still make billions. But I wouldn't ever start watching.

This is going to get about twenty people in America to watch it. The NFL season is just starting and nobody cares about anything national team wise outside of major sporting events like the Olympics b

This is the biggest load of crap since the XFL.

The XFL is a good comparison.

I'm surprised Bettman didn't include strobe lights, moving nets and a trampoline at center ice as part of this World Cup.

They locked in two Warren Zevon songs.

Team Young Gunz will hold their heart to...

Hit Somebody

Team Leftovers will pledge to...

Werewolves of London

No, Team Leftovers will pledge to that 1980s song 'We are the World'. After victory the players will sing it arm-in-arm with tears flowing with joyous pride. Holy hell, maybe Bettman can convince Kenny Loggins, Cyndi Lauper and Huey Lewis to come and sing it live.

Anyone who hasn't checked out the super bowl btw, or college football check out football, she's beautiful.

But yeah, there's even talk of expanding the world cup and why? Because more markets makes more interest. I honestly have no clue why they chose to go with 8 and really just 6 teams. Yeah, the competition levels will be varied, but you want people in other countries to care right? Especially that if you're trying to tap the US market the best way is not to handicap our NT.

Whatever the reason for them not wanting to bring in Slovakia and Switzerland, be it this "competitiveness" crock or said countries simply not having enough NHLers, I still wonder why they didn't take the obvious, elegant solution standing right in front of them.

As in, instead of coming up a bogus way of having two additional teams and two pools of four, they should've just invited the Big Six teams, no one else, and have one pool of six. Everybody plays everybody else once, and then the top-two teams in the pool advance to the three parter final.

It would've pretty much neutered all the complaints. Nothing but top teams facing other top teams, no "boring" total defense battles from underdogs, no gimmicks, no supposed blowouts.

Even the amount of games played would have been almost exactly the same, so no scheduling conflicts either. Now both pools of four are going to have six games, then two semis and then the finals. In a single pool of six you're going to have 15 games in the pool and then the finals.

6 + 6 + 2 + 2/3 = 16-17 games total
15 + 2/3 = 17-18 games total.

Methinks they need to fire somebody.

I haven't gone through the entire thread, but there is absolutely only one song I can think of Team Europe pledging for.

Which is of course by an artist from USA.

PS: Vince and XFL = gold!

That's a format I've been thinking about too. The problem is that it doesn't give opportunity for NHL to expose all the top players in NHL.

What if there was one star player from Japan? I guess Bettman would like add a team "Non-caucasians" having the Japanese guy, PK Subban, Simmonds etc. For an Australian star player NHL would have to come up with team like "Native English speakers using funny accent".

It coincides with NHL training camps, so the NHL would have to release players. If it takes place earlier, the likelihood that players would skip the tournament grows tremendously.

So NHl refuse to let player go during training camp? that is just silly.

Because it's more exciting hockey? I don't see why not lol. Entertain me with all of the greatest hockey talents on planet earth, I won't be complaining.
I don't get entertained by gimmicks. Are you that entertained by the All-star? I sure am not. I know of no other sport on earth with such a ridiculous concept of a tournament. This is an embarrassment to the sport of hockey.
