I'm clearly in the minority here but I'm actually mildly excited for this tournament. Hockey's entertainment and I think the format could be interesting. Kind of really like the idea of the youngest superstars in the game today going up against the guys they grew up idolizing.

Personally, I am really looking forward to this tournament. I dont get the position that some people take saying this tournament doesnt mean anything.

In reality, no tournament should mean "that much" to fans as we arent playing, we dont win anything and we take pride in others accomplishments. Why do the Olympics matter more than World Cup?

As fans, we get to sit back and be entertained by the best hockey players in the world representing our country...what more can you ask for? If it were treated like an ASG then I could understand lack of interest as players typically dont try very hard.

I doubt anyone that enjoys watching hockey will not enjoy the WC.

Except I don't get to watch the best players represent my country.

Only dumb NHL hockey people could think of creating a tournament so stupid and useless. Fans and players didn't even care for the last few "World Cups" and now they are suppose to care for a parody event cash grab like this? The only reason Canada Cups were a success was because of the rivalry between Canada-USSR, overall every time nhl people get their hands on international hockey stuff it's a catastrophic failure. They should ask soccer-football guys how to create real international tournaments that are great for fans and players and that have prestige and people care for...

no NHL'rs in olympics
no problem ...usher the world juniors give it to them

much much better entertainment

as for the world cup...i will take a pass

meaningless dribble with nhl stars certainly not wanting to hurt themselves before beggining of a new season...

I've been saying the same thing for a while. In an Olympic year, move the WJC for U20s to the Olympics.

WRT the "World Cup", it will always be the Canada Cup for me (which Bettman bastardized. The Canada Cup had one of the best trophies too.

Well it won't really matter for McDavid playing for a U23 team and Kopitar playing for a mix of countries where as McDavid representing Canada his actual country at WJC and this World Championship and Kopitar for Slovenia at the last Olympics. And some of the teams aren't even using their best players, I heard rumors that the KHL may not even participate. While the NHL is the superior hockey league there is a good number of talented players in European leagues that should be represented in international tournaments and so far there has been 2 players named both from the Czechs. The tournament like the last lockout is all about money and show casing the NHL not for the better of hockey

I'm more curious to see what happens AFTER this tourney.meaning, will the next one have qualifiers?surely this won't be the set format right?

Love that trophy. The Canada Cup was the first true "best on best" after the 1972 Summit Series. The 1987 Canada Cup was some of the best hockey ever played.

Yea, why would I want to watch the best players in the world play hockey vs each other with medals on the line? Why would any hockey fan want to do that?

You guys are nuts, this tournament is going to be amazing. Looking forward to watching the WC grow and grow over the years until it replaces the Olympics in importance in regards to hockey...similar to what has happened in soccer.
It is people who support the upcoming World Cups who are nuts. Who in their right mind would support such a gimmick that includes a 23-and-under team and a Team Europe? No true international competition should have such idiocy. So on which team will Connor McDavid be on? This is SO ridiculous.

Because it's more exciting hockey? I don't see why not lol. Entertain me with all of the greatest hockey talents on planet earth, I won't be complaining.

It's a good thing that no medals are dealt out in this gong show. I mean, what should we make of things if one of the gimmicks finishes on the podium?

Let's say they make it to the final but lose. They are given the silver medal. Now, what should we make of the bronze medal team? Are they the 2nd or 3rd best country in the tournament? If 3rd best, what country is the 2nd best? And if 2nd best, why are they given the medals one usually gives to the 3rd best country?

But they won't be giving any medals, so no one has to think about any of these things. Of course, you can still ask these questions anyway should the ranking table feature any of the gimmicks notably high.

I'll be cheering for McDavid and the young team. It really doesn't bother me that much, I can see why it would if you were from one of the countries that potentially got cut out of this tournament.

I've been saying the same thing for a while. In an Olympic year, move the WJC for U20s to the Olympics.

And why should the IIHF have any interest in that?

Basically no one outside of Canada really cares about the U20, these kind of tournaments are completely irrelevant even for the average hockey-fans in most of the countries involved. Recently you got some pretty good interest out of Sweden and Finland because they happened to get their best team in ages, but generally people don't really care about them. They never really do, not even when it comes to football.

Meanwhile pro-hockey is interesting for the general hockey-fan, and when it comes to the Olympics also of decent interest to the general audience.

It comes with the territory I guess. In Europe, juniors are just lesser players who are aiming to reach the men's team in the future. They are part of the same organisation as the pros and can advance through the ranks, while in North America you have a clearly defined split between juniors and pros. This also leads to a clear difference in terms of interest in junior teams. Most of the North American junior teams play in markets where they are basically the best hockey-team, but in Europe, these teams - due to being part of the pro-orgnisations - are in the same places as the pros, and apart from some extreme hardcore fans no one is going to watch juniors when you can see pros.

No medals, but traditionally they do play anthems. Last time Paulina Gretzky sang some anthems, and the bearded European guy was great. What will they do this time?

Unfortunately, we need "gimmicky" teams as some countries are not on par with the hockey powerhouses of the world. How much fun is it to watch Canada embarrass Austria in a 12-0 beating?

I still do not get why IIHF have not done this tournament themself? It would have been so much better.

I've been saying the same thing for a while. In an Olympic year, move the WJC for U20s to the Olympics.

Not a good idea if you ask me, it will only be confusing when you look back. Are they WJC 20 champions or olympic champions?

I'm not sure how fun it would be to watch Canada beat another country 12-0 for the simply reason that in a so called "best vs. best" tournament Canada has never actually won a game by 12 goals. The closest they have gotten is beating Finland (twice!) by 9 goals. Perhaps the organizers should tell the Finns to stay home?:dunno:

And what will they play for the two non-national teams?

Indeed, that is the question. My guess is that the NHL will avoid anthems outside of the championship game so that they can avoid embarrassment. Of course the funniest outcome would be a gimmick team winning even in that scenario.

What a crock.

1. The tournament was played, and was great, before the inclusion of gimmick teams.

2. Even the top countries aren't on par. Should Finland also be kicked out because Canada has far better players?

3. At the 2014 Olympics Canada played Norway, Austria and Latvia, and none of those games were close to 12-0. One was even rather close.

I still do not get why IIHF have not done this tournament themself? It would have been so much better.

The NHL can barely tolerate sending players to the Olympics. It would never send players to some new IIHF tournament.
