Swedish coach was just interviewed on Swedish TV. The only thing of interest that he did say was that he was satisfied with all lines except Forsberg's, which he didn't think got enough space in the offensive zone. Don't be surprised if Zetterberg is moved away from that line tomorrow.

Decent second period from sweden, otherwise this was nothing to write home about. Salo is bad as always, Alfredsson actually seems motivated (there's a first for everthing) and the best player on the second line was Zetterberg.

I wonder if Axelsson will play any more games, he seemed to be in a lot of pain.

Wow - it's amazing that a country that can produce some of the best forwards in the game are having to choose between Salo, Hedberg, and Tellqvist. Unless one of those three gets on some kind of hot streak, I really can't see Sweden making it past the semi finals.

Well imo Zettberg played worst in the 2nd line. But it's difficult vs germnay since they have 5 man home all the time.

Well, Hedberg won't get a hot streak in this tournament, that's for sure. He's not in the roster.

On a sidenote: Salo actually had a better save percentage than Kölzig in this game.

3 stars

sundin
forsberg
holmstrom
Sundin's star was well deserved, he was awesome out there and must have eyes in the back of his head. GREAT game from him! No love for my boy Mo and his 3 points, that's just wrong.

Swedes had some screwups they need to address (like Kim Johnsson bobbling the puck during the PP and letting his man walk in and score) but otherwise they looked very good.

I don't know anymore if Salo sucks because he has no confidence or if he has no confidence because he sucks. :)

Who's the third goalie?

I found Näslund over creative and Forsberg well, he did ok but not up to his potential. I like Zetterberg in the center role, although I wouldn't mind having Jönsson playing center in that line too.

Yeah Naslund was skating all over the place trying to do too much and just got bogged down in Germany's trap.

Hmm, feels like I'm the last Salo fan out there, but keep in mind that the game was kinda loopsided in a way, he didn't have alot to do (which is something that all goalies hate), and a lot of players (not only goalies) don't feel as motivated against "lesser competition" in an opening game of a tournament, I'm pretty sure he'd be on his toes against tougher competition. And last but not least, he's a human being, any person can make a mistake once in a while. Remember Roy's last game with the Canadiens, it's not like his career was over after that or became a backup goalie in the farm team after that game. So I'm sure Salo will be back, but of course it'll be a good opportunity for biased media vultures to bash him when something like this happens and claim that this is the end of his career or something... :shakehead

I felt they were the best line in the first period but they disappeared from the radar after that. The second period was good but the rest was bad.

And the German fans really had a laugh about Salo. You know it's bad when the opposition ridicules your players...

This isn't an isolated incident. His play has declined steadily since his olympic mishap.I would say his confidence is in all liklihood extremely low.Its worth considering how his team mates feel about his ability. If they have doubts it could seriously effect their play. Its too short a tournament to allow players especially goaltenders to work out kinks in their game. You have to be ready from the opening faceoff to the final whistle.

True, but I thought the twins looked good in the pre-games. I have my doubts a line consisting of Nilson, Påhlsson and Holmström will do much vs a team like Germany. They will do more damage vs Finland and the Czechs, but not here.

Did that game change your mind at all?

Seems to me he signed a contract in Sweden for this season NHL or no. So whether the CBA is worked out or not, Salo will be in the SEL this coming season.

Side information here too, it wasn't just that goal that affected his game. MacTavish had said on a few occasions that he was having personal issues and his wife did not come to Edmonton this past year. When it rains it pours, even for a nice guy like Tommy.

beautiful goal and passes by Mats.
Really, Toronto needs Alffy. These 2 can murder.
Imagine: Alfredsson, Sundin, Roberts

*Drools*

And ottawa doesnt need him lol good god look at it from both sides.

Do we have to put the score in the thread title right after the game is over? I'd been purposely staying away from the World Cup board since I was taping the game, but this thread happened to show up on the main list when I hit hfboards.

I know, I know.. what a whiner. ;)
