Their poor defensive effort has nothing to do with not trusting their goalie. They had the same poor defensive performance against Detroit when Skinner was solid and kept them in it long enough to outscore their crap d performance.

These are the same consistency issues that always crop up for the first line when McDavid gets loose positionally cheating and chasing. Often the result is someone else getting out of position (Nuge in this case) because they’re moving off their assignment to cover Mcdavids check. When McDavid plays the way a C is supposed to then things don’t get as chaotic. But the entire team has been terrible picking up their checks, in addition to losing puck battles. Neither of those things have anything to do with not trusting your goalie. When you don’t trust your goalie you’re picking up your man and not allowing wide open looks in the slot.
