Value of: Wood and Colton

Given the first round exit and the fact that neither appeared in the series after the first game (the latter due to injury) what do the Avalanche do next since both players have years remaining on their contracts?

Mercer for Colton plus is the type of deal I could see happening and I think it’s a mistake for NJ, both appear to not really be centers and Mercer has more runway.

I don’t see Colorado trading Colton just to trade him though, they’d also be trying to get a center upgrade like every other team in the league trying to get Colton.

It’s not a major need to move him. They have $8.7m in cap space with Lindgren, Drouin and Nelson UFA and Malinski as an RFA. I could see them wanting to bring back all 4, but if the cost is too high I think they’re okay with the UFAs walking.

Would be nice to shed some space, but not necessarily a must trade.

In terms of value, I would estimate he’d at minimum have the same value when they picked him up. Although Avs aren’t in as much as a crunch as the Bolts at the time.

I don't think they pay anyone to take either, but neither player is a must keep.

I don't think they move Colton just to move him, but a "hockey" trade could be imagined.
Wood will be a reasonable filler on a rebuilding team but will not bring anything of note back.

From pure value it seems reasonable. Although I can’t say I know anything about Rosen, but if speed isn’t an aspect of his game he’ll struggle with the current Avs system.

Colton has value. His season was extremely erratic, but he finished on a strong note (13p final 19gp). Unfortunately, he was injured early in the playoffs and I actually think it hurt Colorado. Their third line was a total zero against the Stars. I'm on the fence about moving him.

Both the team and Wood are looking for a separation. He missed a bunch of time with injury and then was healthy scratched constantly down the stretch. He also cost the Avalanche Game 2 against the Stars with an overly aggressive play in overtime that backfired.

Ottawa had to send a 3rd to St. Louis to take Mathieu Joseph (2x$2.95) last off-season. Wood has 4x$2.50 left. I bet it'll take a 2nd or 2nd+3rd to move him. Good thing the Avalanche are swimming in draft picks!
