Post-Game Talk: Woll Wills Leafs over Oilers | Leafs Win 4-3

Compared to 2021 when the Leafs were ahead, Edmonton took several steps forward as contenders and experienced a lot of post season success along the way. Their stars play with a serious edge and they have that urgency. Leafs don’t feel like they’ve really grown at all despite glimpses here and there.
Leafs are 6-2 v Edmonton over the last 4 years

Like I keep saying its DUMB to call back a goal for an 'offside' that you can't even tell is an offside short of a super slow-mo review and using a magnifying glass to see if its an 'offside' or not.
Except I thought he was offside during real time watching it and low and behold someone else in Toronto did as well. The freeze frame is there to confirm it. There's also implications if they get it wrong so it's not used unless absolute certain like the Leafs are - being 12 for 12 over the last 3 years which means it's being done 4 teams a season. Big deal.

Get the call right is all. Can't believe people are arguing this.

OK so if we want to get offside calls right, then why aren't we doing this ALL THE TIME then? There are numerous plays similar to this in every game where a player looks like they could be either onside/offside and yet the officials say its close enough and allows the play to continue. If we're going to be such sticklers and want to get offside calls right all the time, then why aren't we video reviewing every close offside/onside call to make sure we get it right 100% of the time? Why do we only care about whether a player is offside or not when its this close only when a goal a scored and not every other time this happens? Why pick and choose instead of enforcing this rule for EVERY close offside/onside play and take it to the video room to make sure?

This just shows how little everyone actually cares about following the offside rule to the letter if they only ever care about an offside when it results in a goal and on every other situation that's exactly the same where a player is close enough to the line, then that's good enough to continue the play without having to go to a video review to make sure that player is onside.

I just told you in the post you're quoting. There's implications if you get it wrong. Why would you risk a two minute penalty on something other than a play that resulted in a goal?

Edmonton's video review assistant guy was the toast of that fan base last playoffs for being undefeated on offside challenges

I'm not talking about a coach making a challenge. I'm saying in general if we care about 'getting it right' then why aren't all close offside/onside plays being reviewed to make sure a player isn't offside? If everyone was so concerned about making sure the offside rule was being followed then every close play should be review to see if a player is offside/onside. Obviously that doesn't happen because it would slow the game down which is why a player can do the exact same thing as Klingberg did a half dozen times per game and no one cares.

And that's my point. If no one cares enough that Klingberg was 'offside' and it doesn't result in a goal and play is allowed to continue, then it should also not matter if Klingberg was offside and it does result in a goal. The offside challenge has become a last ditch hail mary call to try and cancel an otherwise good goal and who cares if you're wrong and it results in a penalty? The other team still has to score again instead of having that goal count on the scoreboard.

Good for that guy. Still think its stupid to call a goal back on an 'offside' that's barely an offside that you can't really tell if you watched the play in real time.

Like others I think you can usually see in real time if it looks maybe offside. I would be fine with getting rid of the coach's challenge option on offside but I do not feel guilty about using it to beat the pretender oilers

As much as the Leafs looked hilariously bad in the 2nd and 3rd, the same can be said about the Leafs complete dominance over the Oilers in the 1st. And yes McDavid and Draisaitl looked good, but they successfully combined for 1 secondary assist.

I don’t understand the collective orgasm over how good the Oilers looked when we never give credit to our boys when they get goalied.

With that said Woll and Tanev are really the only thing separating this team what what they have been in the past.
Complete dominance in the 1st is a bit of a stretch. They scored 2 power play goals. Leafs looked old and slow compared to Edmonton to be honest. Woll was the difference

Its PURE STUPIDITY that you need to do frame by frame video analysis to figure out if a player is 'offside' or not. If that's the level you need to go to then its pretty obvious that the player was more than close enough to the line that you can't tell if they were offside or not in real time.

This is what officials do all the time in every game and they let it go unless its an obvious offside because who wants to stop the game to check if every close offside is really an offside? No one ever cares because no goal is scored and they just keep playing. This shouldn't be any different just because a goal is scored.
This is the reason why I hate the way things are done now. There are probably 100 times per game that a play could be reviweed for being offside, but ithey aren't reviewed because a goal wasn't scored. But if you want to live by the letter of the rules, then stop the play every 8 seconds to review everything, right? Of course not. So just because a goal is scored 30 seconds after a guy is just barely offside, when the goal has nothing to do with the offside because 500 different variables occurred between the offside and the goal, doesn't mean it should be called back.

That's a huge exaggeration. Its not that many times. The rules are fine as is. Sometimes it goes the other way.

I'm not sure it's that much of an exaggeration. It happens a lot each game. It's interesting, because everyone came to hate the "skate in the blue paint" video review, to the point where the league got rid of the rule. I think the same thing will happen with these offside reviews over time. As others have said, if it takes 5 minutes at super slow mo to see if a guy is offside, the pendulum has probably swung too far

Teams have a staff of people watching every zone entry with state of the art equipment, maybe the NHLPA should negotiate that out of the game and spend that money on salaries.

It was clearly offside. One look was all it took. It wasn’t even close. There have been many called back even closer. This shit happens to every team and as much as it stings to have a sweet goal called back, it would suck a million times worse to lose a game over an obvious missed call.

I have no issue with calling back goals when there is a completely clear offside. I am more referring to the ones where they have to spend several minutes staring frame by frame at the video.

As per the current rules, it was the correct call. Question is whether it is time to change the rule.

They removed the 2 line offside pass. I suggest getting rid of offside all together. Use to centre line instead. No player should be allowed to be in the offensive zone while the puck is in your zone. What you do not want is a player to lurk around the opposition blueline waiting for a stretch pass from their end.

I'd also allow teams to ice the puck but after 5 icings, they get a penalty. The games needs fewer stoppages and more goals.

The trapezoid also needs to go. Let goalies play the puck. Why penalize a goalie who can play the puck better than any other goalies? Brodeur has retired. Get rid of the trapezoid.

I wonder how many goals have been called back due to offside challenges where the offending player didn’t affect the play? If theyre passing the puck to the player that’s offside the linesman are probably blowing the whistle more in those situations.
