WJC 2024 Thread

sorry but thats a horrible take. They outplayed Latvia. They lost. Good for Latvia. I hate this whining "oh woe is me" shit. The take should be congrats to Latvia for one of there biggest wins ever.

But it sucks to jump off the bandwagon this fast.
Zero chance this Canadian team beats the States or Swedes.

Excellent result from a Canucks perspective today in the Canada Latvia game. Realistically Canada just got really unlucky and shouldn't change anything besides cracking down on the penalties, but they will probably want to make big changes, so hopefully we will see Mynio get top 6 minutes vs Germany.

I didn't catch the Sweden game, but Sansonnens was actually a pleasant surprise vs Slovakia. He is big and a smooth skater and made some nice plays. He isn't getting any PP or PK time, but probably deserves more ice than he has gotten. Don't think he has any shot at the NHL, but that really isn't the expectation for a 7th rounder.

Pretty sweet for Latvia. You know that means a shit ton to them, and while they got caved in hard, they hung around enough and created enough to be able to win. Full marks to them.

Canada really galaxy brained themselves into some strange moves this tournament. Wonder if this group pulls together for some better showings or if the wheels come fully off.

Ive never seen such a collection of nobodies representing Canada before.
I was quite surprised they left off some big names such as Misa, Yakemchuk, Parekh and Cristall.
I feel like Canada in the 4 Nations will also feel the repercussions of missing out on some big names players aswell.

I’m amazed that anyone can watch Willander play and question his decision making. His defensive IQ is a ++ trait. He does not rush the puck and make breakaway passes often. He likely will not be an above average offensive player in the NHL. But his team scores more than they get scored on when he’s on the ice.

Looks like a solid 30-40 point physical two way defenceman. You can never have enough of those.

i kinda get why they left off parekh and yakemchuk. molendyk is probably just as good and has experience and they wanted to work schaefer and dickinson in. no idea why they didn't play rehkopf, sennecke and cristall tho

Haven't been able to watch many of the games, but assuming that Mynio has been a 'healthy scratch' for the first two against Finland and Latvia?

But now that Schaefer has gone down......does he get in?

So the internet has now said that Mnyio is registered for the tournament.

According to the IIHF's roster page, Mynio was registered by Canada on December 27, 2024, and will wear number seven during the tournament.

Good for Mynio to get in there and get the experience.

What Canada badly needs is a couple or guys capable of getting the puck on net, especially on the PP. I’m not intimately acquainted with a lot of the prospects or anything, but having none of Parekh, Cristall or Senneke around seems like a miss.

A lot of that is fan bases I'd say. Senneke definitely should have made the team and Carson Rehkopf should also be playing. Other than that, I think all the tools are there. Dickinson is the highest scoring D in all the junior leagues. Why he isn't running the PP makes no sense. Down to coaching at this point in time. How the f*** is Carson Bjarnson not playing. The other two are not good.

Watching Oliver Bonk try and be the maestro, and I wonder is there any reason he’s getting that assignment other than the fact that he’s the son of a former Senator and this is being played in Ottawa?

I got no idea. Dickinson runs the PP in London between the 2. Latvian goal made 54 saves and 82 attempts last night for Canada. Latvia clearly earned that opportunity to win that game.

Sounded like Canada opted for a lot of 2 way Dmen vs puck movers. Just being able to roll all D pairs. ideally, you want 2 guys who can help generate offense from the backend, so that if you shorten your bench down to 2 pairs, you have someone on each one who can either carry the puck or move it quickly.

this isn't really true. they took dickinson, schaefer, price and molendyk all of whom are great puck movers. even bonk and akey are good puck movers. only really andrew gibson isn't known for it but he's certainly more of a two way guy than a defensive specialist

Yes certainly some criticism for the lineup chosen.

Looks like they built a bottom 6 with intent on experience and checking vs having a few players who could break a game open with some better individual talent. Howe Gauthier Cataford collectively were odd choices for what was available in Wood Cristall Sennecke Misa. Not that they had to dump all of them but 1 or 2 would have been good for what i was describing above. I can see moving off Cristall after his poor past performance

Bonk running the PP is incredibly odd too when Parekh and Yakemchuk were available. Parekh is outstanding as a PPQB and they could have just 7th D him if they were worried about making mistakes 5v5

Losing Iginla to a season ending hip surgery was also a big blow as the team needs better net presence and finish and he would have supplied that in spades. Nadeau Catton Pinelli Yager all are good players and crafty but smaller perimeter types and all of them sucked against Latvia Catton cannot finish and Yager has been bad as the leader and emotional heartbeat.

Such a junior thing to want to dance around the outsides and try and score off clean shots. The sooner they figure out to score they need to get inside and in the goalies grill the better. A little adversity is always good to wake them up. It's still a good enough team to win it all but Dave Cameron wasn't inspiring much of a response after the game either IMO.
