Patric Hornqvist laughs in your general direction.

Also Poulin was doing great before the mental health issues hit.
Doing great? He must have impressed you in his 3 career NHL games. He just pissed away a half of a year developing professionally last year - he better come out playing amazingly well next year or he can rot in Wheeling for all I care.

Eh not really. Although we don't know when those started.

Poulin had a fantastic D+1 in which he scored a ton, attracted a ton of attention, and was noticeably faster.

D+2 was a regression and he talked afterwards about the challenges he'd faced during the season due to covid and the pandemic. He didn't say it outright, but I'm 99% sure that's when the mental health issues started to hit.

Took half a season in WBS to get used to things and to adjust and was starting to ascend rapidly and looked like a sure fire NHLer coming into his second pro season... and then it hit again.

So that's my timeline by which I came to that conclusion and I stand by it.

that's what happens when we trade all our picks. but after the first 2 rounds who cares most don't know anyone after that.
It’s just too slow. The clock to make your pick should be like 3 minutes, and you don’t need to congratulate the Stanley Cup winner or let the son of your head Euro scout make the pick. We don’t need interviews with them asking them the same question 32 times either.

Most of the picks after like 10th overall will be somewhere between mediocre and all-out busts. The fanfare and hype is completely unnecessary.

Yeah and I mean... it's the NHL. Nobody cares. There aren't exactly a ton of NHL draft parties outside of Canada, I imagine.

Or at least I've never been invited to one :(

This is a shortsighted take. By the time this player is NHL-ready, the Russian climate could very well have thawed.

Also, goalie is actually the one position that this team has been pretty decent in terms of identifying talent. Why would you pass on a goalie that could be a starter 3-4 years from now?

I don't get the logic of your qualifiers at all
It is all about entry-level contracts. You always want (or should want) to have talented youth on your roster. It balances out the room, it provides energy and it helps with the salary cap.

My take is only about the first round. I believe the GM and his assistants should always be the ones making the call in round 1. Then you hand it over to the head of scouting for the rest. Have at it.

Not enough teams weaponize the first round of the draft to improve the current squad.

Where’s Perreault playing next year? Eliteprospects usually shows where NCAA players are committed but doesn’t show anything for him.

Found it.. BC.

Just realized the draft is on wednesday/thursday. Who the f decided that

This is the result of the NHL making sure that they get back to a pre-Covid schedule for next season. This past season started late, which made the Stanley Cup Final run late, but they were determined to start free agency on July 1st, so that left little time for the Awards ceremony and then the Draft, especially if the Cup Final had gone to 7 games.

I'd expect the Draft to go back to being on a weekend next year.

I know the league is getting easier for small guys, but I'm just so weary of undersized kids that tear it up offensively in juniors. Benson is intriguing, but I would take Wood or Moore over him.

(I'd take Leonard over all of them but I'd be shocked if he's available at 14)

I find Wood very intriguing but how many bad skaters taken in the first round tend to pan out? Seems like the "bad" skaters that pan out are either taken very late (Stone, Pavelski) or are talented enough to overcome it (Tavares)

anyone taking a wing over a center when they are closely ranked is just dumb. wing is where those that fail at center go to play. leonard might be better enough that he's worth taking anyway.

I’m weary of Perreault because on that top USNTDP line it makes you wonder if someone is just mooching off the other two. But if he actually outproduced the other two I guess that nixes that.

There are many current centers that project to look more like wings in the NHL. Then you have a few guys like Benson who on most teams would be playing C but his junior team happens to be stacked at that position.

Just because a player is currently playing a certain F position doesn’t mean that’s where they will play in the NHL. Heck, Poulin was drafted as a wing and has been transitioning to C in WBS.

Honestly I'm fine with whatever as long as it's not a weird reach. Get one of the dudes that's generally considered going around 14.
