With Hindsight Would You Take Cooley over Slaf

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Cooley looks like the better pick at this time.

Especially for a lottery pick, stats and production matter. Slaf la Liga stats were never worthy of a top 10 pick to begin with. See with Hutson as well the stats were a massive indication.

It's true he produced well for a 19 years old last year but we need to remember he did not do anything until being put with Suzuki and Caufield. He will be the kind of player that will need to be put with our best players and play the grinder role.

Also Slaf is the perfect example why you don't offer massive contract to a 20 years old for a decent 50 games stretch.

Ouch.

This post hurts.

You're right.

Massive contract extension, and even when he struggled, the AHL was not even a question...

Instead when he's playing bad we put him on our top line and coddle him.

Smh

People would be crying over us not drafting Slaf seeing him play with Jack Hughes in New-Jersey.

Slaf is doing more than fine as of now. Only getting better the more the habs will get more talent. What about appreciating our guys?

I bet money NJ would have put Slaf in the AHL, for at least 1 year minimum.

So that means he wouldn’t play with Hughes 2 years later?

Btw, I know habs fans aren’t used to see player development but trying to put a kid on the 4th line won’t help their development and confidence in their abilities.

He has a lot of potential but was clearly rushed. This is something that was pointed out by the more knowledgeable posters here not long after Slafkovsky started playing.

They did not put him at a level where he could understand the game, and where the pace would allow him to generate offensive plays. And now he's playing like an unmotivated energy forward. Because he has the size to do that but that's not his game at all.

Hope all these posters who cheered when the Habs refused to send him to the AHL are happy! Good call, guys!

Agreed.

NHL isn't a development league.

Shoulda started in the AHL and worked his way to the big club.

Slaf is on track to be our Danius Zubrus v2.0 at this rate.

Few months ago Slaf was uncontested #1 now Cooley has a good stretch people want to switch, just shows growth isn’t linear, chill out and ask us who had the best draft 3 years from now lol

At the draft time, I preferred Cooley. It's still the same choice now.

My top two were Cooley and Nemec

In that order

I'd still take Cooley at one
Changed my mind. I wonder if Utah would trade Cooley for Slaf straight up. Cooley’s the one guy that could get Dach going and look good doing it.

I think the poll results would be reversed if this was on the main boards

Nah, Cooley is not what this 'core' needs right now
Because it's Dach struggling actually that makes this more of a debate now,
But Hage could fix aaaaallll of this too potentially

Slaf is 20 yrs old.. people are treating him like a finished product already
He's been a bit banged up since the start of the year and obviously not used to being a bit lighter (and somehow a bit slower(injury still? Unsure))
But he , despite 'struggling' is still on a 50 point pace, as our top 6 is figuring itself out still with ghe insertion of Laine

Id be concerned if he was 24, but 20?

It's surreal to me when we score on the PP and 2 of the 5 guys celebrating are f***ing 20 years old still lol.
And next year we insert a 19 yr old lol

Just wish Slaf shot it a bit more, for sure, get mum on the phone again, or Dr. Shot or wtv lol
Slaf is definitely feeling something from that back injury, or like you said maybe a weight thing, or the big contract so early.

Hopefully this last games helps him trend upwards. Not too worried since he's such a competitive guy.

 Man it's been awhile since I've seen you dumping on Slaf. Good timing, you always manage to be wrong.

We tend to forget that big players takes more time to develop and I think that Slaf has that powerforward potential, I still think he is slow and his hands are not that good but those things will get better as he progress, I don't see a 80 pts potential for him for if he can put 60-65 pts and a true physical presence and clutch comes playoffs time I will take him over Cooley anytime. I like Cooley but to me he will be a very good 2nd center and who knows if he will be clutch in the playoffs?
