Winnipeg Sun: Jets, Mark Chipman, call for help as attendance decreases

One of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard on the forum. Trust me, there is not a large contingent of Montreal baseball fans harassing Tampa Bay.

Please elaborate. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I apologize, I was writing in a hurry and confused you so much. I was referring to the Coyotes' brief tenure of success. I don't know how anyone could emotionally invest in a team that good thinking you could be seeing one of their last ever games. Per the Rays, the Bay Area heard the "We need to go to Montreal" song and dance from its own ownership despite Montreal having no interest. And it got to the point of "Sell the team or move it. God this is so stupid" the apathy was so real. They're a World Series caliber team and literally no one shows up either due to distance or "they need to sell the team"

To their credit the Coyotes fans have probably been even more supportive than the Rays and they had actual relocation rumors for years. And that was after their original arena had obstructed views as bad as the Barclays Center did for the Islanders

I don't know. How long does it take to burn through 54 billion dollars?
Bout a week for the American Military Industrial Complex. Freedom BAYBAY!!

4,600 for the Coyotes home opener ...

... just because I thought it was funny seeing all the comments and 'likes' from AZ people in celebration of the Jets averaging 12,052 so far this season.

Yes. The hypocrisy is <fill in the blank>.

The NHL has moved hell and high water to keep a team in Arizona. Let's see what they do for Manitoba.

My guess : Gary's already shopping the team in the U.S.

Well Gentlemen.... it's this simple.

Since I joined HFBoards some 14 years ago, I, and number of other Coyotes fans here, have heard and put up with the same attendance jokes.... "sOuThErN mArKeT iS nOt hockey"..... etc etc etc etc..... and the likes from fine outstanding individuals like yourselves.

It's our turn.

Now for me, I'm really not concerned about the Jets right now. They have a good ownership group that can withstand this current drop in attendance.

But karma can be a real bitch at times. So say hello to her.

Why would that be karma, for me? I'm not Canadian, nor a Jets fan and don't live anywhere close to Winnipeg.

Also not sure where I've said anything about "Southern Markets" or the like?

Merely found it funny, or can say ironic.

So... You're saying you're being hypocritical... and vindictive?

A simple "Yes" will do. ;)

I get it. Canadians have been going after your team for a decade plus, and now you're getting payback... and hopefully the last laugh. That's fair and understandable.

That IMO, is people ignoring the greater picture and just focusing on Winnipeg. Hockey in Canada is dying, slowly sure, but the support is dwindling everywhere.

That's a sellout in a temporary facticity until a new one is built or the team relocates. And it's up to ownership to shop the team not Bettman.

Its a good thing then that Jets have a committed rich owner and does not need support like the Coyotes, and no one here suggested otherwise, isn't it?

All I see is him pointing out the hypocrisy.

Tell me….does Bettman own the Jets
If Chapman wants out, we'll see how hard Bettman works to keep the team in Winnipeg - the proof will be in the effort.

Fair enough. :)

You're missing my point. Bettman will move Heaven and Hell to protect U.S. franchises. We'll see if he does the same for Canadian teams - his record hasn't been great when it comes to Canadians teams but time will tell.

At one point I was angry at Bettman but then I realised the greater of all evil is the board of director. They don't want canadian teams, Bettman just execute their wishes. That was obvious when Quebec was denied an expansion team.

I also do believe the WHA was the greatest thing to happen to canadian hockey.

oh yea Bettman really went out of the way to protect Thrashers.

And its not like owners run the league and determine where teams go right? Its all Bettman.

Man you look at whats happening with Winnipeg attendance and still not get why NHL does not want a team in QC?

Is it a joke or you truly need an explanation?

If you put the ticket price at Florida or Arizona level you would only have sellout games in Winnipeg with a huge re-sale market to boot. Ticket price in Canada are becoming ridiculous and not many fans can afford it. Bettman will never defend the Winnipeg market either, if he has one chance to move it out, he will execute it faster than you would believe. There is a double standard with smaller market team in the US and Canada.

He did, indeed. Only after he realized it was hopeless, did he allow the team to move to Winnipeg.

The past is the past....

We'll see how Winnipeg is handled if/when things get tough.

Maybe that's because the US markets are more important. There's a reason that the NHL is no longer gate driven and it's not because of markets like Winnipeg, although Winnipeg will benefit it and because of the increased revenue of the US TV deals and sponsorships the Jets can draw 11-12k and still turn a profit.

Cheapest tickets I see on Stubhub for the Jets and Panthers with fees included are very similarly priced and both have options for under $30

The big thing for the Jets is actually there split on the Canadian TV deal, not the United States. What Toronto/Montreal drive the Canadian shared rights up to is massive for every other team.
