One bad giveaway, couple clutzy plays, but overall he looked much better than expected. He'll be in game shape about the time this tourney ends.

Tough to play with Day. What a frustrating player to watch all over the place left Stanley alone numberous times.

Stanley was OK and he did what he needed to do

Also, Sham only selected from the CHL. No Europeans. So yeah, there were limitations and caveats and general groupings - but that stupidly simple, (mostly) statistical model outperformed half the teams in the league. It's still pretty astonishing. These nobody fans came up with this system over the course of a few conversations for a total cost of approximately $0 and outperformed 50% of NHL scouting staffs with thousands of hours of eye-testing and millions of dollars. It's insane.

To reiterate, the system was worse than all but four teams without selecting from a scouts' list. It also took zero defensemen.

Stanley looked rusty. Day is a real chaos partner. Stanley moves the puck quite well. I was quite impressed that Windsor was able to shut down that very high power offense.

I thought he looked fairly good for what I saw. I am a big supporter of his however. I did notice at one point he went to go down to block a shot, shot didn't come right away but he stayed with the "shot block" stance then kind of just Stood infront, perhaps lost but I guess that happens often, just looked as many posters describe him... from what I saw after being off for so long, I liked whwre his game was at for the most part. My friends and I shortly lost the plot soon after and I don't remember much else haha

Just finished the first period a few notes.

Stanley looked really poised to start the game. Had a few good reads early on and tends to stay back even in the offensive zone. I imagine this is because his partner Day is given the green light to just jump into the play at will. If Stanley wants to succeed as a shutdown dman there is really no better practice for him. With that being said I saw two chances for SJ that were because of bad reads by Stanley. He looks to be behind the play, often puck watching but that may be expected as he finds his ice legs. His reaction timing is definitely off and he'll need to work on that. What really surprised me is he is often outmatched along the walls, especially by speedier players with some size. They outmatch him to easily with their body positioning combined with their speed he is to easy to get around. He needs to be able to shut guys out completely from the play if he can't get the puck from them with his size this needs to become a huge part of his game if he wants to succeed. Just force them into the wall before they can get around him. His high danger reads are really the major red flag I see here. He has to be better at defending in tight like that. Drew a penalty from a net front battle but almost got beat to the outside again just before. A neutral play. Made a good play to clear the front of the net. Stopped a solid chance by Joseph with an active stick as well.

Also: Windsor looks the dominant team so far. Chabot is going to be a beauty I bet Sens fans have day dreams about a Chabot-Karlsson pairing. Really like DiPietro have all season. Probably the most pure athletic goalie in this draft. Zboril is one of those guys that could really excel as a shutdown defender in the NHL even though he has limited production in the Q. He has incredible strength in his stride and physically. Sergachev is so dynamic at both ends of the ice and his skating is so smooth and crisp on his edges, Chabot too, I just can't see how Serge won't be a #1 dman in the NHL some day has all the tools and the toolbox. I also really like Veleno's game. Had a few quick takeaways with his active stick, always moving and darting around. Made a bad pass that led to a chance the other way but he looks like a very dynamic and smart player a year as SJ's top line C could really be his coming out party. Also like Vilardi's game, his positioning in the ozone is so precise he always seems to find the soft area of the ice and he looks to have great vision and reaction time with his passing.

I imagine the body positioning faults and such will come from not playing competitively for a while. The puck watching I noticed as well, but I'd bet those tendencies could be coached away

2nd period....

First time I see Stanley is just over 5 minutes into the 2nd period on a dzone faceoff. He made a solid breakout pass to hit a streaking winger to make dump in. On the play coming back lost a quick battle behind the net to Joseph who just fed the puck between Stanley's legs and out to the blueline. Somehow drew a penalty from Veleno, questionable one for sure but he'll take it. Made a solid effort to get infront of a shot on the PK. Showing no fear there. Seconds later takes on off the leg blocking another shot. Made a risky pass in front of the net that looked to be pure reaction, it worked but man that could have been bad coming back the other way. Around the 6 minute mark he takes a long and very low percentage shot at the net with a wide open team mate across ice who is banging his stick looking for the pass, probably not the best decision there. Stanley seems to be coming on a bit more in the late 2nd. His positioning and defensive reads look better. Had a good look in the late 2nd with a heavy wrister but way wide and made another solid pass after keeping the puck in the zone.

That Serge hip check! What a physical game these kids are battling hard!!

For a guy who "hated" the Stanley pick so much, you sure spend an awful lot of time and effort trying to justify it.

No he just isn't blindly hating on Stanley.[mod]

Edit: sorry for assuming your gender whileee.

I hated the Stanley pick, but it's silly to unnecessarily ignore his D+1 performance in comparison to other D drafted around him. But this has little to do with Stanley, per se. It's more about what seems to be some notion that NHL scouting staffs have no clue, and HFJets posters are somehow in a better position to draft than the Jets scouts. Even some of the most thoughtful and evidence based posters would have made some bad first round picks for the Jets over the past 6 drafts.

The myth that the original Sham Sharron method would out-draft most NHL teams is still promulgated here, even though the originators' own analysis shows that 26/30 NHL teams beat their simple method.

I didn't like the pick at that point but now he is our guy and we need him to succeed so I will take what I can get from him

I'm one of the few that liked the pick and have seen him play quite a bit this year on tv, personally I've seen improvement from the year before nothing mind blowing just little things in his play, I expect even more next year, still a project and I don't know if he ever makes it to the NHL but if his game keeps improving there's hope.

There's usually some hope with any prospect that gets better, most do with age. There was a lot of hope for Kostalek to who showed improvement year over year in the Q but has since slowed in his development. I've learned to check my enthusiasm for improvement with already low scoring D unless they just kick the doors in. I've noticed some improvement in Stanley's decision making from last year but it's not like his decision making was even average last year it was well below. He's got a long way to go and of course I want him to prove me wrong but until that day happens you won't hear me agree with the pick in any way.

I agree with all of this. I still don't like the pick.

I liked his progression till he got hurt. Too bad he did.

His mobility and tools are much better than September 2015, but upstairs is just non-existant for me.

Yeah. His slow ability to read and react to the play has always been the biggest red flag with him for me. I actually quite like his tools it is his tool box that is really lacking. Maybe some of the positioning and gap issues can be learned in time but I feel it will always hold him back to some degree. Hope I'm wrong and he has a epiphany and suddenly knows how to play great hockey.

I was, and am as pissed by the pick as anybody. I'm not hating on Stanley. Blindly or otherwise.

I don't need the confirmation that it was a bad pick. I'd rather see Chevy and the Jets scouting team get lucky.

Ehh, if you're already labelling him as a bad pick when he's nowhere near done developing and ignoring any progress he makes, I'd say that qualifies as blind hate.

You don't seem to grasp the difference between a bad pick and a bad player. Not automatically the same thing.

He was a bad pick but he could turn out OK in spite of that. He is ours now so I am pulling for him.
