why would you WANT that position, especially as your first big shot?
$$$, and some people perhaps like a challenge? there's what 10ish NHL headcoach jobs per year that open up, so it's a career-advancement opportunity. it might look grim from the Jets POV, but like i mentioned some folks might like the challenge & the nice pay bump.

if you can turn around the Jets supposed toxic locker-room, while dealing with Chipman and Chevy, and actually put up a respectable PO performance off-the-bat, as a first-timer that improves your prospects or market value going forward.

i don't think this is the route the Jets will chose to go, but just a couple reasons why a first-time HC prospect (i am talking coming from Jrs or overseas. not a current NHL Assistant HC) might want the job.

Completely agreeing. So many "kiss your Jets coaching career goodbye" posts, when the reality is just just as you mention - why would you WANT that position, especially as your first big shot?

I mean almost any team looking for a new coach has issues that need to be corrected. Why some act like the Jets problems are some awful thing that has never been seen in professional sports is beyond me.

Toxic locker rooms in Edmonton most certainly didn't keep head coaches away over the last decade, ditto in Buffalo etc. Winnipegs room issues won't keep the vast majority of coaches away either.

For the vast majority of these coaches they may only ever get one shot at an NHL position and the salary that comes with it.

The gm and owner have shown they fight change at every cost, let things rot and fester and haven’t shown they know or want to do what it takes to win. The way the franchise had been handled from above would scare away a coach more so then the players and the room

Lots of orgs don't like change and let things fester. Look at Chicago keeping their cup core and signing them to crazy long term deals and then refusing to change for years after their last cup win despite sucking ass. This org isn't the only org that is loyal to a fault. Our org just didn't have the success that somehow allows fans to be ok with it. Pittsburgh has been spinning its wheels with their old core for years now when they would have been better off to move on from some of their older players and rebuild. Detroit is in a bad apot now due to that same process.

Resisting change is a hallmark of almost any industry and organization because people by and large hate change.

We aren't the only org to hold onto coaches for too long or GMs for too long without much success. See Poile in Nashville, Wilson in San Jose.

Shit hit the fan here this year which is actually a good thing as it is forcing this org to reevaluate and change gears before its too late for this group.

I won't defend Chevy but overhardt basically takes all his guys to arbitration

Before everyone gets their Perfetti jerseys done up for next season - he is also represented by Overhardt. I believe Perfetti burned his first year this year so I guess we have 6 years left of him?

I don't believe Cole is represented by him, I believe he's represented by an agent that works for his firm.

Also while he burnt his first year of ELC he didn't play enough games to impact his UFA eligibility. We still have 7 more years of team control.

I feel like the Jets have done that a few times - let a promising player burn an ELC year (so they can get better paid a year earlier), but not burn the year's UFA eligibility.

Well they did it with Conner. Ehlers and Trouba played enough that UFA status was reduced a year.

It is a common strategy a good many teams use with college players to get them to leave early.

Exaggerated perhaps, nonexistent? Unlikely.
I ask myself based on how the season played out and the exit interviews as well as comments from PLD, Conor and Ehlers during the season.
Maurice walking away.
Scheifele’s odd comments.
Past seasons ruffled feathers comments.
Bringing Hendricks back a second time.
Is this a healthy roster/culture and would I like to everyone back this season?
HELL NO change is warranted and long overdue.

So the best source we have says the locker room talk is over exaggerated….I’m sure everyone will ignore this and assume the worst.

Oh I'm sure it got bad this year when things went south but I thought the for years bit was a stretch.

I'm sure things were also tense in 2019 hence bringing back Hendricks and Wheeler talking about his leadership.

Notice that the two main times things fell apart in the room was when the team significantly underachieved expectations. I'm sure most rooms aren't great when that happens.

I'm sure there are definitely issues in this room though that do need to get addressed. I think the hierarchy does piss some players off as does Wheeler's intensity. Marks lazy play and lack of it being held accountable is another thing that needs to be fixed.

I don't need some WHL coach to repeat rumors he might have heard from some grapevine....

I don't care who you are as a player, nor does it matter the team you play for.... if you are considered the #1 center on your team and you are playing like dog shit and the coach let's you play like dog shit while still giving you the most ice time, it's going to cause issues in the room. Everyone knows this.

Scheifele is just lucky he isn't playing on a team that had someone like Mark Messier in the dressing room, because Mess would have straighten things out by beating the crap out of Scheifele, never mind throwing his clothes in the shower.
