There was a short shift where he was out with Scheifele and Wheeler where he looked pretty good but the skill mismatch stood out.

Its preseason. Way too early for any conclusions.

True but for years we've heard about how we have 2 top lines and Schmidt and Dillon were going to bolster the D, and it finally looks like a team that's playing up to expectations. Obviously take preseason for what it's worth, but I don't think they ever looked this cohesive with Maurice at any point since the Conference final run.

It's amazing what proper positioning can do. Schmidt properly recognizes a guy at the back door and ties up his stick prior to the puck arriving (when did that ever happen last year?), which allows the puck to come to Connor who breaks out 2 on 2. Last year Schmidt would've been 5 feet out of reach from tying up the stick.
