Game Thoughts

QB
Dru Brown with another just so-so performance. He hasn't shown much in pre-season this year, but I think he is beyond caring about establishing himself at this low pre-season level. He's an established backup and will get further opportunities.
Tyrell Pigrome stole the show again. O'Shea used the word "frantic" is describing his running style in the post game, and it about sums it up. He's exciting, he's elusive, he's talented. Throws a good ball. Keeps his eyes downfield. He was absolutely completely incapable of going through reads in this game though, I could tell from the upper deck where every pass was being thrown the second he got the ball. He's a rookie straight out of college though.
Felt bad for Josh Jones. Didn't get much time in either game. Depends on whether they liked what they saw in practice if he'll get offered a PR spot.
RB
Johnny Augustine has not looked very good this pre-season. He finally got a decent rep or two late in his appearance here tonight, but that drop in the flats where he bobbled it upwards was really bad It's going to be hard to change the ratio at RB without a massive change elsewhere, so let's hope Oliveira is healthy by next week.
Salima splashed a lot this game, IMO. In a lot of different areas. I'm liking what I saw from him. Going to be tough for him to find room on the roster though.
Vance Barnes had some moments late.
WR
Was not impressed with Agudosi's action tonight. Started with a very poor attempt at a catchable ball on the sidelines. He had some nice plays later, but still another drop or two. I've been talking about this guy since I first saw him in TC in 2021, I want him to succeed so bad. He needs to play better than that.
Brendan O'Leary-Orange continues to see a lot of work with the #1's. It was a mixed bag again as he couldn't haul in a key 2nd down conversion for Brown at one point, albeit it wasn't a drop as the ball was a little off him. But shows fairly steady hands, just hasn't stood out as much I'd have liked.
Nobody else really popped today. Nice catch by Bailey at one point. Highlight of the night from the rest of the guys was the Amari Jones TD catch of course.
OL
If we are forced to play Jakub Szott in a real game we are dead.
It was not a great night anywhere here. Best player I saw was Richmond out at RT, he definitely can move well for a big man. You probably all know I like watching and talking about the Global guys, so have to talk Machino. A true developmental guy who had the measurables but had never played outside of Japan when drafted, you can see the improvement after 2 years on PR. He's moving better out there, footwork and hands are much improved. I'm still not sure they are CFL calibre though. One of the Dru Brown sacks as Machino getting absolutely schooled on the inside.

DL
Caleb Thomas too me has earned a look over Ricky Walker. That being said I think Bombers will go Walker to start. But the leash will be short with Thomas waiting right behind him. I doubt the Bombers will find room for both on the main roster, but Thomas will be on PR unless he declines it or another team offers him a roster spot immediately. Anthony Bennett was quiet again.
Collin Kornelson had a moment or two in this one I thought. Liked his game. He is a guarantee to return to U of M for another year though.
LB
I stand by my half-time comment. Barrington Wade is going to be released. He looks the part. I'm sure he sounds the part. But he just doesn't get the job done. He looks so smooth out there, and has power, but just never seems to get himself into the right spots. I don't see what he's done to get onto the roster so far in pre-season.
Meanwhile I think Malik Clements had the game he needed to have. Came up and made the plays he needed to make. Didn't have the dominant pre-season he had a year ago, but solid enough to retain the WLB until Kyrie is healthy.
Shoutout to Radha Kramdhi at SLB. That man was on fire tonight. Making plays all over the field, including the run stopping game. Hell of an effort, makes me a lot more comfortable with him backing up Alden Darby at that spot.
Time to talk another Global, this time it's one of my favourites in Les Maruo. He was not one of my favourites tonight. With Hansen on the 6 game to open the year the global spot should be his basically by default. Sure there's two Global punters still here, depth OL Machino, and depth DB/STer Karamoko, but Maruo should have been the guy. His head was up in the f***ing clouds tonight. One play Bombers on D runs with 11 players. There comes Maruo after the play, oops forgot to get on. Then Bombers announce personnel switch before next play. Clock is running and they have 13. Oops Maruo forgot to run off. Couple series later again miscommunication and Maruo wasn't on the field when he should have been. Don't know that I saw him after that. Not sure what that means.
DB
Demerio Houston is the guy who needed to have a night to secure a spot. This was not the night he needed. He hung around on the PR only dressing a couple of games in 2021, then last year just stole a roster spot, then the premier spot in the defensive secondary from a former defensive player of the year in Rose. Post injury this year, he does not look the same. I'm no longer sure where he fits. He might be released tomorrow.
Evan Holm was again picked on a bit early. A lot of allowed catches in front of him. He wasn't alone tonight though that's for sure. In the end I think he added to case for one simple reason. Availability. Jamal Parker was the primary player he was battling for a spot and Parker left the game in the 2nd quarter with an injury.
Another name getting a lot of hype is Abu Daramy-Swaray. He played a long time on the corner tonight, most of the game. He was up and down a thought. Tackling was a bit suspect, but coverage was better mostly. Not sure he moved the needle much.
Souleymane Karamoko I think in the pre-season games did everything he possibly could to make the squad. They were using him at the HB position, one of the hardest to play well in the CFL. And he played WELL. Solid in coverage. And stepped up a couple of times to make impressive plays near the line of scrimmage. Also made a play or two on ST. Not sure he can unseat Maruo as the Global STer but he did everything he could for sure.
K
No point in fighting it Castillo will be the kicker. Staton missed an XP. Might still get a PR offer though. Most interesting though was that Karl Schmitz was holding the kicks for Castillo. Could that be a sign?
P
3 punters, 1 job. Where's it going to go? I'm leaning towards 36 year old rookie Karl Schmitz from the Bahamas. Is he the biggest leg in camp? Nope that'd be Aussie Jamieson Sheahan, but that bad bad shank makes me question the consistency. Those type of punts are killers. Is he the most accurate? Probably not that'd be Liegghio, who showed a real knack for coffin corners last year. But Schmitz is a bigger leg than Liegghio, showed more consistency than Sheahan, and has shown some accuracy as well nearly nailing a coffin corner on the 1 last game before it just barely rolled into endzone. Combine that with him holding for Castillo, I think we have a new punter.
KR/PR
Matt Cole stole the show no doubt. I think his return ability might have him as the front runner for the backup american DB role, despite just a so-so showing on D.
But I have to get onto the one of the most ridiculous things I saw tonight. 2nd and something, idk, and Sask has an incompletion. Immediately after the play ends, the refs don't even have the ball yet there's Abu Daramy-Swaray sprinting back to the PR role and then just stands there. O'Shea or whomever calls for the punt team I see Matt Cole put his helmet on and run onto the field. Then Cole just stops and looks at Daramy-Swaray standing there. Then there's frantic arm waving on both sides as Daramy-Swaray tries to tell Cole to go back to the sidelines, Cole trying to tell Daramy-Swaray to run up to the corner position on the return. Eventually Daramy-Swaray relents and runs up making it just in time for the snap. Very odd situation, and one I THINK comes from O'Shea's favourite story of how Alexander made the team by stealing reps from other players. I think the players are taking that to heart and trying to do the same, which is the problem when EVERYONE is trying to steal everyone else's reps haha.
Anyways, I was thinking about posting my roster predictions tonight but seeing as how it's midnight and quite frankly I don't feel like it I won't. Cuts are tomorrow, so I might not get a prediction in before the word starts to leak out of who made the team. But should be an interesting day tomorrow. Bombers already have a half dozen players on injured lists, expect more tomorrow to that list as well. CFL rosters are ALWAYS in flux though, so in the end while tomorrow may be the end of the road for some, many will get chances all over the place in coming days, weeks, months, and years. Hell WR Blake Jackson barely made a scratch in camp last year, came nowhere near a roster spot. Maybe hung onto the PR for a week or two? Not sure. But anyways he signed in the NFL with the Vikings this week. Never know what's going to happen.
