I've repeatedly given Yzerman kudos for his first round picks. I'm just tired of the scrub players he keeps adding in free agency. There's a lot of room in between going all in prematurely and repeatedly adding lousy plugs.
If this summer he makes an impactful trade or ponies up for a better quality of UFA, I'll say it's a good move. But if he keeps bargain bin shopping to tread water for yet another year or two, I'll keep saying that's bad decision making.
Usually those "plugs" have been best possible guys at the current market. Like Tarasenko was best UFA left on 2nd July and he signed with us. We had the cap space so why not? There was nobody better on the market, and at same time, there was no kid to handle this role.
Yzerman also could not predict Tarasenko's father die only 11 days after the signing, which did hurt his off-season training.
Biggest UFAs have maybe ignored Red Wings, because Yzerman does not want to give much term to UFAs. He likes to keep those deals short, because on the future, it's prospects who are gonna take those spots soon, but which are not ready short-term. You are not gonna block them with 7-year deal. You do that only for a superstar in a possible situation like Marner.
The plan is pretty clear how he sees the overall roster building and estimated development. All will match with the timelines. Chiarot is gone, when Edvinsson is gonna get the role and big 2nd contract etc. It was always built like that. MBN takes the slot from Tarasenko etc. etc.
It's almost funny, how the UFA signings will match with the current 1st round picks.
2024 - will draft MBN - scoring winger - will sign UFA Tarasenko to hold this spot
2023 - will draft Pellikka - skill defenceman - will sign UFA Gostisbehere to hold this spot, later extended for Gustafsson.
2023 - will draft Danielson - defensive Center - will sign UFA Compher to hold this spot
2022 - will draft Kasper - physical Center - will sign Copp to hold this spot
2021 - will draft Edvinsson - big defenceman - will sign Chiarot to hold this spot.
Seider and Raymond are the only expections, who were just promoted to a crap team in big roles. There was no UFA-matching, we were just missing too much talent and still tanking.
The list goes on. It has been a nice surprise, how fast Kasper did develop and both Copp and him are now good to have on team. Kasper will learn from Copp, who is natural "player-coach" type of personality. When you look on the timelining, Copp deal will end at same time as Kasper ELC will end. So the money is transferred between them for the roster hierarchy. Same for Chiarot-Edvinsson etc.
That's the Yzerplan, and it's very clear to understand. Those deals are matched to die away when the prospect ELC will end, and when those kids have earned a raise.
