Windsor Spitfires 2024 25 Season Thread Part Iv

Some thoughts...

- Only goal against was Allard on a 5on3, all alone in front. Not much you'll do there.
- Windsor did a carbon copy of Thursday to start - came out with energy, speed, and hitting. That's how you have to play against Soo.
- The save on the penalty shot may have been the TSN Turning Point. Costanzo was on his game all night, and has been all series, which is exactly what everyone had hoped for.
- Garden and Greentree scoring right after kind of sealed the deal. Garden's not going to skate through everyone but the kid has wheels and a solid shot. Greentree's goal will be on highlight reels for a while.
- I love how Hicks isn't afraid to pinch. A very nice goal early thanks to some pretty passing.
- Morneau hatty - what more can you say about him? He's quickly becoming their unsung hero. Doesn't get the publicity of Protas and Greentree but is proving incredibly valuable.
- I had to leave the game early but the Spellacy goal was a thing of beauty. Chip the puck up while SH, beat the guy to the puck, go in full speed. You can't teach that.
- I'm glad Cristoforo wasn't hurt on that head-checking play. They don't need him out, too.
- Props to Hicks for pulling Gaymes out of an altercation, too. Hicks is really maturing and, while I love a good tilt, there's no need in that situation.
- Kennedy is becoming a serious favourite of mine. He's quiet but will step in at a seconds notice and seems like the guy that will beat you up and then go "what choice did I have?" I appreciate the pickup by Bowler.
- Protas quietly gets three helpers. I wonder what the single-series record is for assists by a player? I need to dig a bit...
- I have no idea why the fans were going after Reid.
- The "throw him out" chant was amusing. I haven't heard that one before and I noticed Costanzo chuckle a bit.
- The atmosphere is impressive. Just over 5600 fans and they let the Hounds know. These crowds have been outstanding, in terms of vocal, though "you suck, ref" still makes me cringe. Please, learn some names LOL

This was the Spitfires team we had hoped for. They're playing full 60 minutes, strong defence, hitting, crashing the net, and staying disciplined. However, the Hounds played a much better game and I fully expect them to have a say in Game 3. I'll be shocked if it's 7-1 or anywhere close to that. In fact, I'm expecting a split up there.

The Reid thing and Ref things are my few dislikes of the playoffs. As the atmosphere heats up, more people attend, some of which have no clue/little care. Had a guy from the area last night rooting for ‘hockey’ wanting Soo to make it a game at 4-1 lol.

I’ve watched a good 60+ regular season Spits games this year, and did the DH Soo trip. No memory of Reid doing anything worthy of the crowd on him.

I try and remind my self they have to sell all the tickets to anybody to make some money. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t planning on purchasing the one to my left and right in some important games down the line. Lol

Don’t get me wrong I love the atmosphere, bring on the “warm up the bus chants” but I feel bad juju with the “na na na na goodbye” in Game 2

Great effort by the Spits in game 2,Costanzo solid in goal so far definitely has the Hounds number,2 games in the playoffs 2-0,3-1-1 in the regular and in those 7 games has allowed 10 goals, average of less then 1.50,his last 3 games including the last 2 playoff games and the 4-0 shutout over Sarnia in his last regular season start his average is 1.00.
Through 2 games only 4 of 18 skaters haven't registered a point, all 11 forwards have at least 1,Robinson, Eichler, Kennedy and Walton are the only players with zero points so far.
Protas and Greentree have 7 points each,Morneau with 6 including 5 goals,3 points by Nesbitt, Garden and Spellacy.
Everyone else 1 point each,14 goals in 2 games quite the offense.
Hicks and Garden both 16 year olds have performed admirably in fact the Hicks goal was the game winner last night.
On to the Soo and a hostile environment take 1 game at a time is my motto.

To be fair i recalculated Costanzos save percentage over the last 2 PO games and he is now at 927%. That is very respectable. Spits will need more of that in game 3. Tough place to play and the Soo will approach game 3 as a must win. If the Spits play with the energy they have shown in the last 2 games they will be fine.

I to have been impressed with the 08 group. Hicks has been my guy since the beginning of the year. The only thing that concerns me has been his aggressive hits. He has to learn to temper that a bit and really pick his spots better. I can see a badly timed penalty coming from his play. He will learn to time those better and will be tough to play against. He will be the Spits top D soon.
Garden and Lemieux have no quit motors. They don't make it easy on other teams D.
Beltchez not being in the lineup is disappointing but the other 08’s can fill in nicely.
And the late comer Robinson has been a pleasant surprise. I was concerned on next year's D but he will be a solid addition.

On to game 3. That should be an interesting game. Be safe.

I never really got into the chanting thing and I know from past experience that the " we want a ref or the ref sucks" chants have the opposite effect. Why would you want to piss off the refs? No good ever comes from the chanting.
And players love the Boos when they play in other teams rinks so hope they boo away Monday lol.

Let`s not get too giddy and over confident. We are playing a team that we should beat hands down with absolutely no problem. This is not a Flint, Erie , Kitchener or the Knights. There is a much tougher road ahead. We need to get better every night.

It seems Costanzo has a bit of focus back. That is great to see. I still cannot understand why we are heading into April and we still have no line combinations that are constant. You can see when the players get tossed out there with line mates they have never played with they are kind of unorganized. You would think that as a former player, coach Walters would understand the power of finding talents and energies that compliment each other.

I mean look at the pro`s and some of the all time high achieving lines. These coaches identified compatibility, and strengths that accented and brought out the best of each player. When these ingredients were combined the result was simply marvelous.

Marchand , Bergeron, Pastrnack- Boston
Messier , Anderson , Simpson - Oilers
Maltby, Draper, McCarty- The grind line Detroit
Gelinas, Murphy, Graves - The kid line Oilers
Hall and Oates- who can forget these two
Gretzky and Kurri- the wrote the record book

It goes on and on how players and top notch championship coaches find that chemistry and allow these players to play and practice daily so they gel and harmonize. We simply continue to throw whoever , whenever out there all the time. I just cannot understand this.

We have had great success to spite this oversight.

Protas says.........“They (Morneau and Greentree) are great players, but they’re better people off the ice and it’s fun to play with them. We have chemistry and hope we keep going.

After this line.......who are the other 3 lines ??

Seemed to me Walters iced the same lines from game 1? The only changes came from PP and PK time that always throws off the next couple of shifts. And sitting their top line for the last 10 minutes of the game. They won 7-1. Walter's had it under control.

Don't think anyone is giddy although they did win and are up 2-0 in the series so we can celebrate that . And no one is looking past game 3 tomorrow. Need to win that one and another one before thinking about future opponents. A lot of lessons learnt in the spring of 23. Be safe.

Absolutely.
Most understand. Few don't

Maybe u ignored it.

haha I sit with some great folks and the area has mostly reasonable fans.

This becomes kind of a two-edged sword. You're supposed to beat the Soo so if you win, it's supposed to happen, but if you lose, all heck breaks loose. At the same time, the Soo isn't some pushover that you can assume a win against. The road's going to get tougher but I'm going to enjoy this series because, despite any "they should win", it's been great hockey.

Bingo. I'll gladly take a split in the Soo. Play the game you did in Games 1 and 2 and see what happens. The GFL Gardens is a tough rink to win in so it's not going to be anything like 1/2.

Yes they needed to win their 2 games at home. Prefer them to end it in 4 instead of putting a chance of another trip to the Soo.

I know it's shtick but Soo is 15-15-4 at home which is the worst home record for any team in the playoffs.

Soo also beat Windsor at home and scored four in the third period in another to almost tie it. Windsor also played .544 on the road, so apologies if I'm not automatically going "they should dominate Games 3 and 4." I'm hopeful but not assuming.

I never said that. I am disagreeing with the premise that the Soo is a tough place to play based on playing the worst at home out of all playoff teams. If Windsor lost these upcoming games it wouldn't be because of how tough the Soo is at home.

The Soo has played Windsor well at home. That's not going to be an easy rink to get two wins in, let alone dominate like Games 1 and 2.

No need to play a game 5. No need to spend extra money.
Sweep is what's needed

U r setting yourself first failure before they even play the game.
Windsor needs just play like 1st 2 games.
However if they sweep u will be all over how they beat them. Playing both sides.

If the Spits manage to get up early in the game and frustate the Soo it should work for them. If the Soo gets up early they will make it tough on the Spits . Need to take the hope away as quick as possible, get a lead early.

I agree , Windsor has been playing with some real energy. This team has the potential to surprise in the playoffs. They are the only team to hand London 3 defeats and have beat everyone in the league this year. It is time to play 60 minutes, full court press , every shift , every period , every game.

Both London and Windsor haven’t won in the others barn though. I hope that’s the series we get. As much as I’d hate to face an Elim. To London, what a fun series that would be. Long way to go to get there. Both teams need another 6 wins, but if the Spits continue to play high energy hockey and full effort through full games, I think it’s possible. Unless a major hiccup I see the Winner of the Western taking it all again.

I was really hoping for a London/Saginaw series for a 24’ Playoff and Mem Cup Rematch. Saginaw was so hot at the end of the year too once adding Chernyshov. I guess there isn’t a single series that is over yet, but losing your two home games then hitting the road is a recipe for disaster. (See: 2023 Spitfires lol).

Huge game tonight, and if Costanzo wasn’t so stellar in the last one… I’d throw Froggett at em. I don’t want him to ride the pine until he’s needed, and he’s also shown signs of performing well under pressure.

Regardless of tonight’s outcome, I see the Soo coming out hotter in Game 3 than Game 4. Joey was so good in 2, it’s hard to not lean to him tonight.

But with Soo firing up for a home match, giving our backup a start with a short leash (3 goals), I’d be okay with.

This teams got fight when they want to. If we drop down 3-0 on the first 10 minutes, and then switch goalies, I still see it as winnable.

Soo needs this one, game won't be over until the final whistle. With Lalonde in net Spits should be ok but they will have to match Soo,'s intensity.
