Windsor Spitfires 2024-25 Season Thread, Part III

Costello has 2 points in 24 games on a good generals team. Wasn’t a top 5 points guy on any team as far as elite prospects goes back.

Wonder if the last weeks with Winegard were in regards to this move?
Winegard has very little trade value; wonder if they were seeing if he could kind of take Martins role as the big man on the 4th line up front?

I think the fact we got a 3rd and 4th for Martin is great news. He’s headed to a contending team in the East. I’ve always liked his play, but he’s not the scoresheet guy. Glad he’s going somewhere with a chance.

Moved 8 pts in 30 games this season for 2 points in 24 games, with less size and experience, but two years younger. We don’t have 07’s aside from Nesbitt, so, fills a little depth there.

Greentree/Protas/Belchetz
Morneau/Abraham/Davis
Spellacy/Nesbitt/Lemeiux
Gaymes/McNamara/Garden

Christoforo/Mathurin
Woodall/Kennedy
Walton/Hicks

Costello and Winegard probably sliding in and out for Gaymes and Garden and when there’s injuries. Eichler may split time with hicks once Mathurins back, with Winegard as the 8th D, 14th F.

Costanzo
Froggett/Newlove
Windbiel for Goalie Depth.
Newlove is an 07 as well.

The 3 & 4 we got in the Martin trade are basically a wash for what we spent on Kennedy.

In
Kennedy 05 Big D Man
Costello 07 4th Line F
McNamara 05 Depth F, 3rd/4th line

Out
Martin 05 Big 4th Line F
Manzo 07 Mid Sized D Man
2nd
2nd (conditional)
5th

Pair of 2nds for 1.5 years of Kennedy seems like a better deal than everything else I’ve seen.

Manzo was select 8 picks under Kennedy in the 23’ draft, both 5th round picks.

we didn’t lose size or age/experience, just put the size on the back end instead of up front, 05 and 07 out, 05 and 07 in.

I don’t like seeing Martin moved, but looking at the roster, it’s more complete.

I wonder how Costello is on faceoffs. Getting that initial puck control is huge. Big factor I loved Maillet even when he wasn’t producing on the scoresheet.

Getting a 3rd and 4th (although distant) for Martin makes me feel better about spending what they did to get Kennedy. I thought they would have tried to move one of Froggett or Newlove (maybe they did) and maybe they will next season because i believe Windbiel needs to be on the team next year.

I wonder if Froggett's injury hampered any trade market?

I like it Martin was not liklely an OA next year and with McNamara we kind of replace the spot with potential upgrade. Adding an 07 is good. Big kid not much offense to date but hard to say how much he's been utilized other than 3-rd-4th checking line minutes. Was about a point a game in midget. Good move. Bowler did good considering he did not sell or trade high target assets or blow up the room.

Wyatt Kennedy will be wearing #2 for Windsor same number he wore in NBay,while Shawn Costello will wear #10,he wore #32 in Oshawa.

There's no guarantee Martin gets the same return in the offseason, either. If Costello becomes a valuable two-way player, and the picks turn out even remotely, it's a good situation.

I'll give Bowler credit - he checked all of the boxes for this deadline.
Depends on the boxes.
Did decent

Nice trade here on the final day. Will miss putting Martin out there in certain situation to stir it up and throw his body around but as an 05- 4th line grinder I'd say that's a hell of a yield to get an 07 and 2 picks. Costello has a history of rough stuff, 13 points in 39 games last year in the OJHL and the 100 PIMs stand out. So hopefully a change of scenery helps his offensive game and hope he can play with an edge out there to replace what Martin had.

Now onto the match tonight. I don't know what to expect to be honest but think it will be a battle tonight for sure. Going to need a hardworking 2 way effort from the puck drop especially against the knights. Costanzo needs to come prepared for battle in net.

Go Spits.

Expect a full lineup available except Froggett and Outwater and maybe Costello unless he made it to London already.

Gens fan here. What are we getting with martin?
Big body. Decent hands around the net when given the opportunity. Will stand up for himself and teammates without hesitation. Good kid, just a numbers game next year for our potential OA'S. Well liked by team and fans. Never heard a negative comment.

I echo a lot of what Cherrydon said. 6'6 225, uses his size well. Will stand up for teammates in a heartbeat. Solid kid in the room, everyone seemed to like him. Good speed when he gets going but don't expect a ton of points. If he's given a chance, he can put up points, but that's not his area of expertise. The biggest issue was his odd discipline at times. He doesn't always time out revenge well and it costs him a minor penalty (few and far btwn, fortunately). In the end, he's a solid veteran who does his job well. Windsor just wanted to upgrade the 05 group, esp for next season, and he wasn't likely to return as an OA.

I’m not as positive. With London’s full lineup I don’t think we can hang. Any team can win a game on any night but the rosters are not close.
Rosters offensively Windsor' definite edge. Goaltending pretty even when Joey is on. London definite edge on D.
