Windsor Spitfires 2024-25 Season Thread, Part III

The price to play this season is high. We've seen that with Kingston/Saginaw, with Konnor Smith, and with whatever Flint/OS did. Bowler got McNamara at a bargain price, hoping to get the most out of him. But, if you wanted that big veteran d-man, you were going to pay via limited options. Woodall wasn't being moved. Cristoforo has improved an impressive amount and wasn't going anywhere. Eichler's an 05 Import so unlikely. Lavigne has limited value in Jr. B. Do they go for a forward? Okay... Gaymes? Nah. Nesbitt? No chance. That leaves Manzo, who's been a regular this season, learned from some talented people, and now get a chance to thrive in NB. The picks are a lot but they're the price. If Bowler didn't get that Dman, people would have been rightfully frustrated. So, they got one. At least they didn't pay Konnor prices.
The prices r relatively the same or slightly higher.
Only goes higher if you pay what is being asked n no bargening chip..

Happy with the move to pick-up Kenndy and McNamara. Improve our 3rd/4th lines of offense with experience and size, a guy who can play all forward positions and try in multiple situations, and as a former 1st round pick there could be some untapped potential.

Also pick up the big steady D, won't score a bunch of points or be a quarterback back there for us but good 3/4 or 5/6 defenceman back there that will play his position and hopefully defensively sound, definitely a upgrade on Manzo, Eichler, and the youngster Hicks.

Will be interested to see if BB stays pat the rest of the way or makes another tweak, I hope he doesn't swing for the fences, it seems he has his head on right the year and won't pay these Ludicrous prices, this team is definitely improved and anything can happen come playoffs, London will be hard to get by as there the clear top team this season IMO.

But I'm happy with this Big team the Spitftfires have assembled, if we can't out skill some teams on some nights atleast will make them have to earn the win.

Go Spits!!

I could see a small deal or two but I think Bowler's checked off most of the boxes and might just watch now. They needed an 05F... got him. They needed an 05D physical D... got him. I'd love to add to the 07 group but that can happen in due time. It's hard to argue with the progress so far.

The only piece might be perhaps a sure fire tested rock solid Goalie , or if you could steal Penalli ( which you won't) , but wow what a four line team you would have..........Thats a lot of fire power backed up with 6 strong D. You could make some noise in the playoffs if you let the guns fly and keep a real tight D.

Only time will tell..

I'd like to see them get a solid backup but I'm not sure that happens until the summer. Pinelli would also cost an arm/leg. You're looking at Nesbitt ++, or an 06 +. Unless someone wants out, I'm not doing that.
I don't think I would cut Nesbit loose. He is a top 6 forward already and is getting better every month and only 17 years old. I know you have to give to get but i think it would have to be picks only or I would take my chances.

Yeah, I’d be happy to be done. Sure, a solid backup wouldn’t be bad, but at what cost? I don’t think it’s worth it. Bring in the experience, at what age? 05? 06? 07? Unless you’re getting a star, I’m not sure the options are promised to be better than what they are. And we don’t have the picks for that

Froggetts shown promise of locking in for big games, and Newlove’s been steady, and Imo has really good positioning in his small sample.

Newlove’s probably an upgrade on 5/6 teams over their current backup at the deadline.. If Joey goes down we’re probably in trouble, as neither backup has experienced significant work. But in a pinch, I’m not opposed to either of them. And hope we get them both a bit of work down the stretch.

We got the D man that was the obvious hole in the lineup, has an existing connection with Mathurin too from NB.

McNamara I’m still whatever on, and hope to be surprised. McNamara, Martin, and Gaymes could be a pain in the ass of a 4th line tho. 200ft player, big guy that can go, and a mid sized ball of energy that’s always starting stuff.

The price was steep but you got a solid 6'5 d man who is back next year. Not sure what some expected, to get quality you have to give up quite a bit. He was good in the playoffs last season. Needed another D with playoff experience. You now have Mathurin on one pairing and Kennedy on the other. That's 40 mins a game with one of these players on the ice.

They still have SOO's 2nd this year. They have 5 2nd's in the next four years. Plenty of assets for next season.

The funny thing is the price is what someone is willing to pay. Whether hockey player's, gold, hockey cards, automobiles it is all relative. The reality is GM'S remind each other's teams that I paid (whatever) it was 'for an say for a 19 yr old when I needed one and now you need one so the price is very similar. It is just swapping future commodities for today. No one will deal with someone who will only pay $4000 for a 2000 Mustang but won't sell one for less than $8000. I don’t get too worried about it. It was less obvious before the league clamped down from selling picks 6,7,8 years out.

So i know very little about him. Can someone fill me in? Size works for sure.
Steady player, almost 200 games experience including playoffs,Right hand shot, similar to Mathurin play wise ,as u mentioned good size, seems thrilled being in Windsor, plus player in the playoffs, had him on my possible list of acquisitions, hopefully plays well moving forward and returns as a much needed 05 dman.

His plus minus was like + 21 in his rookie year on a good team and a slight minus player on a soso team. Typical stats for a defensive defenseman. Stay at home minute muncher as per reports. Good on ice leadership. Invited to Chicago Blackhawks camp.
Stay at home d nan is needed.
Some defense man don't or don't even try to..

Is he a physical, tough D or one who uses his feet n length to defend?
Both can be very effective but which type D is he?
Edit. TY BB......big crease clearer, good transitioning D to O on turnovers?

From what i have heard , he is all of the above. Played big minutes and was always out against the other teams top line.....right hand shot too !

I don't think BB wants to tinker too much with the chemistry in the room neither. Good Group that seems to find ways to win.
