10 Game Limit is an average of once every 7 games - ish. I’d be okay with the limit being 7… once every 10. With guys like Martin and Gaymes and the depth we have, if they fight a 4th time and then miss a game, it’s no big deal, but teams shouldn’t have to carry an extra “enforcer” (loose term these days) so that their main one can take the suspensions.
I've said recently that 5 or 6 should be a solid target; that gives you a fight every 10-12 games. Right now, three seems very small in the big picture.
Okay, thoughts on the game as a whole...
Goals against - both were defensive breakdowns.
The good:
- multi-point games from Protas, Greentree, Abraham, Davis, and Woodall. 14 players with points in total.
- 3/8 on the PP. Aside from a really weird 5-on-3 that they blew, it's hard to complain about it.
- Costanzo with 31 saves; it kind of got lost in all the chaos but another fantastic game from Joey.
- The idea that they figured out how to shoot from anywhere is definitely a positive.
- Most of the scrums, but I'll get into detail with those later...
The bad:
- Not a great start and they were kind of lucky that Misa and Oke weren't around.
- That 5-on-3 was really bad. I couldn't tell if they were taking it easy or they just messed it up. Maybe both?
- A fairly disorganized game at times. They weren't passing great and seemed sloppy here and there.
Onto the incidents...
- Parekh - I don't know what he was thinking. Honestly. Martin skates over at the net and Parekh crosschecks him in the face. Martin skates away and gets another shot to the lower back, dropping Martin. Officials jump in. Martin gets up, shakes off the gloves, and nails Parekh with a right. The officials and Parekh drop as a Spirit player comes over to get Martin. Parekh gets 5 min match penalty for crosschecking, which I think is an automatic 2 games + review. I don't see what the point of the entire thing was. Push Martin away if you don't want him there. Then, to add the second shot is just asking to get punched. Martin isn't the guy you want to try that with.
- Guo/Nesbitt - Collision along the boards and Guo goes down. They skate a bit and collide again. As Nesbitt falls, Guo is falling and takes a baseball swing with his stick. A very clear "oooooo" from the crowd. They get up, drop 'em, handful of punches each, then Nesbitt gets the takedown. As that's going on, Belchetz and Cloutier start talking and grabbing on, while Woodall and Willis are doing their thing. I have no idea how Woodall got 4 for his part; that's nearly a fight and I didn't see anything close to justify that. The 10-min misc for "failing to clear the zone" is a newer one to me but I've seen it at least once this season.
- There were more incidents but they were stupid things that added up to bigger things. Hicks was lucky to not get 5/GM for his hit. I have no idea how the Manzo/Glavin one started, but Walton had someone in a headlock at one point.
This was a game of frustration coming to a near boiling point. A lot of unnecessary stupidity by veteran players. But, take the two points, get up on the Spirit by 11 in the standings, and move onto Guelph on Friday.
