Onuska looked pretty good despite giving up 3 last night. I don't think his GAA is reflective of his abilities, and as long as wins are getting logged, I'm not focusing on the goalie numbers. He isn't playing as lights out as he was during the run last year, but he's still playing well. A breakaway (while on the PK), a Giveaway at the face-off dot and a 5-on-3 goal. Maybe Onuska should've had the second one, but Sarnia never should've had that puck. I stick by the decision Windsor made and it makes it a little easier to get Joey in net more which will be great for future seasons.
I don't think Wright comes to Windsor. Bowler doesn't seem to be that blockbuster guy. They said before in an interview they're trying to make Windsor competitive for years to come. I hear that and think no major sell, no major buy. Wright makes sense and would be a great fit in a go for it, and if Meidema goes out I wouldn't be the most upset. However, I don't want to let those picks go for a rental player. You look at the youth on this team, and yeah sure, we can be good this season, but next year? We could be better. The year after? We could be better. They've put the puzzle pieces in place to compete for several years to come and going all in for a single season now, seems a bit counter productive. I don't think we're going to win 3-4 OHL titles but to get home ice advantage this year and the next two I wouldn't say is out of the question looking at potential 03' & 04' Overagers.
We lose Maggio but Abraham, Maillet, Peer will all have a bit more experience. We lose Renwick, but I'm liking Ride, DeAngelis is turning into a stud and Christoforo is solid. We lose Onuska, but Joey Costanzo I think has starter goalie capabilities here in the OHL. We have the depth in Goal for an OHL backup in 23/24. I'd love to hang onto the OA's but that's impossible. Looking all the way at next year, we have this core group of productive players that will likely improve as they get a year older, keeping the spits competitive, I don't risk it all on Shane Wright.
I also don't think Savard stays here long, which could be the factor that throws this competitive plan all out of whack, but looking at what we're guaranteed to lose, doesn't put the spits in panic mode or a full "sell" season, which as a fan, is great.
I'd love to watch the Spits win every OHL championship out there, but playing close competitive hockey makes it fun, and that's what they've been doing post-pandemic shutdown, and it's been a lot of fun to watch.
