POs, special teams. How could so much AAV produce so bad. It makes no sense. How would you fix it?
Great question. I can't figure out why they can't just have Matthews sit in the same spot as Ovie and Stamkos and just wire pucks.

Yes, I heard that too but I was not sure if it was JB or Sammy. That was a year ago. Willie is now gaining the rep of being Mr. Breakaway so I expect teams will pay more attention to him for fear he will sneak in behind them and make them pay.
Agreed

If they want to match better defenders against him it means Marner and Matthews gain an easier load.

Either way the team benefits

If he's forcing their D to back off a bit doesn't that work in our favour, making it easier to clear the zone?

Well they don't have him in the same spot because Ovechkin and Stamkos shot right, and Matthews shoots left. They do tee up Matthews on the other side a decent amount, but peppering the blocker side is probably more effective than peppering the glove side.

But also, Matthews through his career has scored goals on the PP at a better rate than Ovechkin and Stamkos, and the 2nd best rate in the history of the league (400+ min) behind only Draisaitl (thanks to McDavid). We don't think of him as the PP goal scorer that Ovechkin and Stamkos were for one big reason. We just don't get the same number of PPs as Ovechkin and Stamkos got, especially in their primes.

Seems correct. Going glove side as opposed to blocker side seems like it would make a considerable difference.

I also think Ovechkin and Stamkos relied on the 'one-timer blast' a lot more than Matty, who has scored in a lot of different ways.

I think another factor is that neither Rielly nor Marner seem to get as much zip or precision on their passes to either Matty or Willy, so the one-timer isn't as effective.

Pass quality is far from the issue, but yes, Ovechkin and Stamkos were definitely more skewed towards slap shots and power than the wrist shots and accuracy that Matthews is known for.

I didn't say pass quality was the issue, I said it was a factor, and that is very true.
They get very good pass quality. That's one of the things that helps them score on the PP at one of the highest rates of all time; behind only the guy that plays with arguably the greatest PP playmaker ever.
