He's great when he wants to be, like when he is playing for a contract. One year later, the guy who was on a 120 point pace is back to an 82 point pace. It takes some kind of talent/effort to score one goal in your last 6 games when you are so talented.

Like Matty scoring one goals in nine games last year?

Every scorer goes through dry spells, but at least he's still creating chances for himself and his linemates. Eventually they will be going in again.

This is normal for Willy to take shifts, games, stretches of games off.. you know it is a regular thing when a couple of the talking heads on HNIC are brave enough to mention it on air.

The unusual part is the rest of the team being just as lazy and disengaged.

He has zero assists in his last. Mitch gets assists like taking candy from a baby. Surely Willy can get one every few games.

Which player would you pay $92m to? Willie would be last on my list.

You have to keep him motivated unfortunately. Last year pre contract he was motivated. Babcock used to drop him down a few lines and that would get him going again.

Nylander is a 2025 updated version of Phil Kessel. When hes hot, hes extremely hot, flying on the ice, everything he touched becoming gold and can producing at high rate whatever with who they are playing... but even his line producing at high rate, his game doesn't make his teammate better, they are just converting at higher rate. But when he's cold like its actually the case, hes pretty bsd like it was the case with Kessel. The main difference was Kessel was alone in his time with Toronto and needed to be the offensive leader vs Nylander who actually the 3rd wheel of leafs so leafs winning and people didn't care about it.

NYlander is a worst contract than John tavares was for us from 2019-2020 till now

Hes been horrific.

8M secondary player, we are pretending is a superstar core piece

Soon we will pay a 10M player in Marner 14M and pretend nothing is wrong with that
 
Willie has been irredeemably bad in 2025. The more he tries the more he looks like he’s out there for some Lone Ranger hero shit and the more awful it gets. It’s like he’s lost all confidence, brains, scoring touch, chemistry.
 
Seems like its in his head at this point. Is fighting the puck a lot, and is afraid to shoot. Last year he was firing it from everywhere. Not sure what's up. I'd like to put him back with McMann and see if they can't create off of the rush.

Overpays on those 3 in particular are an end game scenario. We can't afford the level of hard nosed players we need to win rounds. Basically too much money on soft players.

If MM WN JT had a combined salary of 24m a year we may be ok. Instead they have 34m or something stupid. 10m extra and cut some junky players gets you around 2 extra 7m players say like ROR or Kadri level maybe better. That alone would tip the scales
